I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
i genuinely don't think there's much, if anything, hotter than someone clearly having a blast doing something they're really good at. doesn't really matter what it is. the combo of competence and joy is absolutely lethal to me
positing the idea that shane and ilya's characterizations (by parts of the fandom) suffer from fans limited experience with healthy relationships/love. i'm not saying that we're all miserable virgins who've never been in a good relationship, but it's becoming more and more apparent to me that some people have not been in, or even seen, an equitable partnership before.
there is a subconscious need to sort into these roles that largely rely on inequitable dynamics, when the reality is neither of these characters fits wholly into one or the other. their ambiguity is difficult for people (especially ((sorry)) straight people) to comprehend. but i think that ambiguity paves the way for equanimity.
a great example from the show is the "i can carry my bag" "how're your ribs?" exchange at the cottage. people might assume that ilya would carry their bags, but it's not about occupying a role to either of them; it's about seeing a need and being there to take care of it!
they are, most importantly, supportive of each other as partners and as equals. it's arguably the entire thesis of the series! so what if the way they care for each other isn't tied to a role or personality trait, but is solely based on NEED? what if love is taking care of the other person in any way that you are able to? shane/ilya care for each other by filling the gaps that the other can't. or maybe doesn't even know how to fill (yes yes filling more than just gaps hehe haha).
if you look at their relationship through this lens, it makes perfect sense why the events of tlg unfold the way they do. shane sees that ilya is struggling, and tries to offer help (to fill a need), but ilya shrugs it off and hides how he's feeling. shane can't be there if ilya straight up won't let him. and shane isn't being open about how much he's struggling with his team and hiding their relationship, so ilya has no idea that shane would be open to coming out sooner than they planned.
neither of them realizes the full extent of how the other is being impacted, mostly because they're hiding from each other, but once they are both on the same page about what the actual needs are, they get right to work sorting it out. because ya know they freakin love each other i guess
What's the word for someone who is a slut but hasn't had sex yet?
Much has been said about how Shane’s specific brand of subbing aligns with his issues #hisissues.
But I also think it’s worth talking about Ilya’s side of things.
He gets told no one wants him around, no one needs him, no one misses him. He’s expected to politely submit and accept being screamed at, insulted, and degraded. He’s told he has a responsibility to give and provide but can never achieve it. He’s told he’s lazy, disappointing, weak, shameful. And most importantly he’s not allowed to do shit about that. He has to nod politely, agree demurely, maybe mouth off a little if it’s his brother but always always obey. His purpose is to obey and provide and what he provides is never good enough.
So it makes sense that he’s so into their whole deal. Because Shane doesn’t just like him and want him around, Shane’s desperate for him. Shane’s willing to do insane things just for the privilege of having his attention. And Shane isn’t some nobody hanger on Shane is the absolute top dog in his world, he’s the most respected and most respectable and he’s on he’s knees begging for Ilya, only happy when he’s got Ilya, can’t fucking get enough of Ilya. He’s not obeying and subservient he’s making alllll the calls. He’s got all the power. He can snap his fingers and Shane, the actual Shane Hollander, is hitting his knees with his tongue out. And Shane never cruel to him or critical Shane is GRATEFUL. Shane is thanking him with tears in his eyes.
When they’re together Ilya is in control, he’s appreciated, he’s noticed, he’s powerful, he’s wanted, he’s always enough.
Have we considered that Shane’s clarifying questions help Ilya process his own emotions? Mr. Stoic Mr. Strong Mr. Responsible with a controlling father keeps things so tamped down that I wonder if Shane asking things for his own understanding helps him emotionally process as well.
I’m watching the Moscow phone call scene, and Ilya in his grief starts talking about how his family is at their worst and are being terrible to each other. He seems resentful, almost bitter.
Shane asks “Is it very upsetting?” And Ilya responds “Yes,” and then, after a beat, “But maybe… I am upset about the wrong thing…”
Shane prompts him further, “You mean, not your father?” And from here Ilya really starts to open up. He gets sad. His heart is broken, and he lets Shane see a little piece of it. Lets it breathe out in the air.
We often talk about how Shane’s questioning is useful to him, how it helps him better understand the world around him when he feels like there’s something he’s missed. But I think it’s so important to acknowledge that their communication is so compatible that this helps Ilya gain a better understanding of his own thought processes and emotions as well. They really do become better through each other
WHY IS THIS SO GOOD?!
reasons shane and ilya should be evenly matched in size, height, weight, build, strength, athleticism, etc. in canon and in fanon
i find it hot
they’re comparable generationally talented first line center professional hockey players
positioning shane as smaller/shorter/daintier than his white dom top boyfriend perpetuates racial, gender, and sexual stereotypes
i personally find it REALLY hot
when he chooses to, shane can physically overpower ilya (hockey, shoving ilya into walls i.e. vegas rooftop and stairwell scenes) but when he wants to submit in bed, he allows himself to be pushed, carried, held down, etc. because they both like it and want it
feminist scholar jane ward: "queer circuits of desire do not rely on the erotic encounter of opposites"
they can wear each other's clothes in a cozy boyfriend hoodie "give. i miss your boring laundry smell" "why the fuck are all your clothes dry clean hand wash only" long distance yearning way or post-game sweat damp base layer horny way or "gross now i have cum on my sweats i'm stealing yours" "okei yay ♥" fondly annoyed way
in conclusion have i mentioned i think it’s really hot

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!! (x)
Thoughts on Shane's Episode 6 Meltdown and Ilya's response to it
So Tierney mentioned in an interview that he didn't expect Hudson Williams to go big and dramatic with Shane's freakout after the dad caught Shane and Ilya together at the cottage. Tierney expected it to be more contained. He thought it was way too much at first, and that he'd have to edit most of it out, and it was only later, in the editing room, that he decided it worked.
The thing is that Shane does have a much more quiet, contained freakout later in the episode, in front of his parents — the kind of freakout that was probably closer to what Tierney was originally expecting, where he shrinks in on himself and hides his face and goes quiet and small.
The contrast between these two freakouts is so telling.
It's says so much about Hudson Williams' understanding of Shane, and his understanding of Shane's relationship with Ilya that he chose to go big and dramatic for Shane's initial freakout when he's alone with Ilya, and chose to shrink it down in front of Shane's parents.
It tells the audience that Shane doesn't feel like he needs to contain himself in front of Ilya. Shane feels like he's allowed to have the big dramatic meltdown in front of Ilya, without being afraid of what Ilya will think of him or wondering whether it will change the way Ilya sees him. Shane lets loose in front of Ilya in a way he would never allow himself to let loose in front of any of his other friends or loved ones. He allows himself to lean on Ilya.
And I think this, more than anything is what gives Ilya the confidence to invite himself to Shane's parents place and come out with him.
This vulnerabilty Shane shows Ilya when they're alone is what gives Ilya the confidence to stand beside Shane in front of Shane's parents in a Boston t-shirt and say that he and Shane are lovers, that his name is Ilya, not Rozanov, that he would love some more pasta and some more good Russian vodka, thanks. This is the reason Ilya can sit in the Hollanders' dining room like he belongs there, like the extra seat at the table exists specifically for him to fill.
Shane gave him this big, dramatic demonstration of complete, perfect, unconditional trust, to let himself lean on Ilya, so show Ilya this panicky, dramatic, uncontained side of Shane that no one else has ever been allowed to see.
And it's easy, after that, for Ilya to give Shane his complete, perfect, unconditional support in return.
Ilya doesn't have to question whether he's wanted by Shane, whether he's needed by Shane, whether he's a burden to Shane, whether he deserves Shane, or whether he's good for Shane. He knows.
He knows because Shane told him, not just with words, but with his whole chest, his whole body, his whole everything, that Ilya is his person.

♡ I wanted to share this with all of you. Being neurodivergent and having anxiety/c-ptsd can be incredibly exhausting at times for me! (Especially the brain fog, low energy days, and when I have anxiety/panic attacks. Sometimes I have what I like to call rolling attacks because they can last days!) I hope this can help out disabled folk, mentally ill folk, heck even the average person!
Hudson: “What’s always been something that’s frustrated me, not even with like other men, but also just there’s a lot of taboos around exploring physical intimacy with people you admire and love without people, especially in Western culture, being like, ‘Oh, they’re fucking, they’re doing this.’ I just was always frustrated by these kinds of notions. Especially with Connor, who I love dearly, it was something I was always kind of adamant that no matter what people think or want to infer, I’m always going to just physically express my love. I feel like if you’re still biased or jaded or uncomfortable with expressing physical love for people in 2025, you got to f*ing, just, you know, get over yourself.”
