Alright. *so*.

My maternal grandparents met *at the circus*. Grandma was a clown, grandpa was a comedic acrobat, classic love story. Grandpa had actually *run away to join the circus* at age 14 and had just been there ever since, as one does. I never did find out why Grandma had been there in the first place. They did circus stuff for awhile, then settled down to be farmers and raise a weirdly unknown number of kids (my mom feuds with most of her family so I have no clue how many aunts/uncles I have, on top of them taking in lots of foster kids). Grandpa died juuuust before I was born, but I was raised with stories about him. (He was much older than his wife, and died at the ripe old age of 94 or so, doing giant swings on the trapeze literally the day before his heart gave out, or so the story I was told every single I watched the Princess Bride was on and Inigo and the Man in Black did giant swings). Interestingly, because he was always the missing figure I got lots of stories of him and lots of pictures of him but not much about my Grandma's clown lore. I coincidentally had clown lessons in elementary school as part of some gifted program thing and I remember my Mom solemnly gifting me my grandmother's clown horn and real clown outfit? Don't know what happened to the outfit (it did not fit, I remember it was a faded orange?) but the horn ended up getting mostly eaten by our family dog through no fault of my own. Grandma taught me the one circus tune she knew and my mom insisted we get all the same training SHE got growing up, which was mostly generic cuz its not like we were even in the same state as their circus anymore. Basic gymnastic lessons to see if we were as good as grandpa (no, though my own sibling actually related to him was the best of us, I remember). Any time I had to do a book report clowns or comedians (or horror, weirdly) was my mother mandated topic. A lot of gifts were clown related, like the balloon animal how to book. A huuuuuuge part of my mom's identity is being circus folk.
