why is 'pop music' called that? like it's a description and a genre, as well. why???

like if we did that with movies we'd have "pop-movies" including 'Forrest Gump' and 'The Excorcist' in the same category. (even if you haven't seen either, you've likely heard about them. key note tho, they're a romantic and a horror, respectively)

we can all agree the movie example is dumb, right? so why did we just accept it for music?

and what about 'indie' music that would fit into the 'pop' genre except it isn't popular? it could use all of the 'pop' formulas but if it was just made by a couple teenagers in a garage, it can't be 'pop' (ular). so what should we call it?

how popular does a song have to be to make it a 'pop' song?

what is a 'hyper-pop' song if it isn't popular? just 'hyper'?

i think we need to come up with a new name that describes the genre of 'pop' music rather than if it's just a famous song.

also indie music can't be a genre either for all of the same reasons (to me, this is all just my opinions/genuine questions).

tl;dr : 'pop music' and 'indie music' aren't genres, they're describing how popular a song/album/musician/band is

Remember when joining fandom as a younger person meant lurking for a bit and figuring out the vibe and etiquette instead of coming in on day one and calling people weirdos for liking weirdo shit in the weirdo factory.

The other day I was surfing the internet and I found this specialized painting colour wheel, it shows how real paint colours relate to each other. 

Outside: the purest/brightest colours.

Inside: naturally muted or earthy colors, like browns and ochres.

The Center: dark neutral tones used for mixing shadows.

The Lines: the lines connect colors that are opposites, if you mix them you neutralize the tone creating clean grays or browns instead of muddy puddles.

I want to share this with you because I think it is really illustrative!
