I (like many others) won’t be able to visit England for a while, so I’ve decided to make some plans for the (hopefully not too distant) future 😀 I really miss Bath (especially after seeing it again in Bridgerton), so that’s at the top of my list. And I like to visit Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Teignmouth and Dawlish again, those little seaside towns where Jane Austen went on holiday herself. And of course Worthing, which may or may not have been the inspiration for Sanditon (personally I believe it was)❤️ Sometimes making preparations is almost as much fun as the real thing (almost...) . The beauty of Lyme Park (Pemberley in the BBC's 1995 Pride and Prejudice) owes an important debt to the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni, who was hired by Peter Legh VII in the early 18th century to create a new southern façade and courtyard. The courtyard has the air of a north-Italian palazzo, with its arcades, Doric columns, and terraced staircase that Darcy comes dashing down (once he’s changed after his dive into the pond) to go look for Elizabeth. . . . It's been described as 'the best scene that Jane Austen never wrote': Mr Darcy's dive in the Pemberley pond in the BBC series Pride and Prejudice 1995. The pond in which Mr Darcy (Colin Firth) takes his dip is in a meadow outside the general visiting area of Lyme Park, the magnificent country house that portrayed Pemberley. I wouldn't follow Mr Darcy's example, if I were you … as you can see in this image, the pond is quite murky. Even Colin Firth didn't want to jump in there: the man you see diving into the pond is a stuntman (who, according to Austen folklore, became ill after his dive). The underwater images that you see of the actor were filmed in a studio water tank. . . . 'What are men to rocks and mountains?' 😉 Aunt and uncle Gardiner watch anxiously as Elizabeth Bennet nimbly climbs up over large boulders to get a stunning view over the Derbyshire landscape. This scene in the BBC's Pride and Prejudice (1995) was filmed at the Ramshaw Rocks formation on the southwest edge of The Peak District, near the town of Leek. It's a popular walking and hiking area that offers many fantastic views over the national park. . It took a whole day to film Mr Darcy's marriage proposal to Elizabeth Bennet for the 1995 BBC series of Pride and Prejudice. The Drawing Room in Teigh Old Rectory, where this scene was filmed, was so small there wasn't enough room for the cameras and both actors. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle each had to be filmed separately, and their scenes were later edited together to create the effect of continuous conversation. Some ten years after the mini-series aired, Victoria Owen, the owner of the rectory, decided to open a B&B in her beautiful home. She's never had to worry about customers ;-) Around 75 percent of the guests are fans of the mini-series. You can even stay in Elizabeth Bennet's bedroom (a pity the closet does not have shelves anymore). And all guests are free to use the Drawing Room, where Mr Darcy made his ill-advised proposal and which still features the wallpaper from the series. . How could Elizabeth Bennet refuse his hand in marriage? In Pride and Prejudice 1995 we see Mr Darcy, seething with indignation, walking back to Rosings after that horrible proposal. Lady Catherine's stately home in the series is in fact Belton House, a National Trust property in Lincolnshire, of which we not only see the exterior, but also a few of the many rooms inside. Belton House was built at the end of the 17th century for young John Browlow, whose wife proved to be a real Mrs Bennet; she managed to marry all four of their daughters to rich and succesful men. Belton House remained in the same family for 300 years until it was donated to the National Trust. The house and the grounds are open to visitors. My personal highlight: The Blue Bedroom, which was Mr Darcy's bedroom in the series. The 18th-century desk at which he writes his long, explanatory letter to Elizabeth, still stands in the room. . Mr Darcy looks up with a mournful look, wondering why Bingley has brought him and his friends to such a place. He does not yet know he is going to meet his future wife just a few moments later … . The picturesque village of Lacock served as Meryton in the 1995 series of Pride and Prejudice. It's extremeyly popular with filmmakers and it's easy to see why: Lacock still looks very much as it did in the 18th century. Although you clearly see the façade of the Red Lion in the series, it's no use going inside to look for the assembly room where Mr Darcy makes a rude remark about Elizabeth Bennet, as the interior scenes were filmed in a studio. . The handsome 18th century Edgcote House near Banbury was turned into Netherfield for the 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice. Both the exterior and interior were used, although the ball scene was filmed at Brocket Hall in Herfordshire. . Edgcote House is in a tiny hamlet with the same name in Northamptonshire. The estate has quite an interesting history. A major battle took place here during the War of the Roses and in the 16th century it belonged at one time to Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII. The current house was built by a rich London merchant and is still a private residence (and therefore, sadly, not open to the public). But you can see Edgcote House from the public road. And if you're fond of walking: Edgcote is on the Battlefield Trail, a long distance footpath that links three of England's most important battlefields. . Jane Austen's England celebrates the 25th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice! In one of the very first scenes of the series we see the Bennet family leaving church after the service where Mrs Bennet has heard great news: 'Netherfield Park is let at last'. This was filmed at the parish Church of St Mary and St Ethelbert in Luckington, which dates back to the 12th century. We see the interior of the church in the last scene, during the double wedding of Lizzy and Darcy and Jane and Bingley. Next door is Luckington Court, the house that was used as Longbourn, the home of the Bennets. The house unfortunately is not open to the public, but the church is! While still not being able to visit England, I'm browsing through the photos I made in 2017, when I was a guide on two Dutch Jane Austen tours. This photo was taken at Burghley, a phenomenal stately home near Stamford. I was standing on the Lion Bridge, which was designed by the famous landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. Of course Burghley is better known among Janeites as Rosings, Lady Catherine's country house in the Pride and Prejudice adaptation from 2005. Did you know that some of the staff of Burghley played as extras in the movie? For 'Jane Austen's England: A Travel Guide' I interviewed room guide Peter Cochrane about his experiences as one of Lady Catherine's footmen 😅 . Due to covid-19 Burghley House will remain closed until March 2021, but the gardens are open (make sure you pre-book) and are very pretty. I'm sure Lady Catherine would approve. I hope everybody is well and safe ❤️ Since most of us won't be able to visit England for awhile, I've decided to bring a little bit of England to you. A spooky anecdote about this ancient inn – not for the faint of heart! 😉 . I am pretty sure that Catherine Moreland would have loved to spend a night at the George Inn in Norton St. Philip. It’s one of those ancient inns with low beamed ceilings and creaking stairs that without a doubt have an amazing effect on a 17-year-old girl with a very lively imagination. Or for that matter, on a 37-year-old travel guide writer who is visiting places that have a connection with Jane Austen. . In 2013 I spend a night at this establishment. It was used in the brilliant film adaptation of Persuasion from 1995, as the inn where Anne Elliot and her party are staying in Lyme Regis. I thought it would be special to stay the night there, and have a bite to eat in the same room as Anne (Amanda Root) and Captain Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds). . It seemed like a great idea, until, the night before, I read a review on Tripadvisor. The review was from a gentleman who was very positive about his stay, but there was something that was still bothering him. During the night he had woken up from a creaking sound. He had looked to his wife, but she was fast asleep next to him. Then he looked at the rocking chair that was standing next to the bed. It was rocking. And there was no one in it. . After checking in, I was extremely relieved to find that there was no rocking chair in my bedroom. I must say that I had a pretty good night’s sleep. No creaking sounds, no hollow murmurs, no distant moans. The only downside of my stay was that I bumped my head four times on the doorframe of the bathroom. As if it was getting smaller every time I walked through it. But I was surely only imagining that. Or was I …? .
