I cannot express enough just how badly I want some kind of epilogue to PHM where the Humans and Eridians are fully in contact with one another: sharing their cultures, teaching each other their sciences, travelling to each others systems for diplomatic & research purposes as well as offering each other whatever help they can while their populations regrow.

I wanna see the unbridled joy on the faces of human schoolchildren who get to meet the first Eridians who come to visit Earth. I wanna see the Eridian ambassadors insisting to the humans that they get a chance to meet their schoolchildren, because they themselves were schoolchildren when a human teacher came to their planet and inspired them to become astronauts.

I wanna see humans getting permission to set up a small embassy somewhere in the Eridani System, possibly even giving a very elderly Grace a chance to see humans again. I wanna see how surprised the humans are that he doesnt want to come home to Earth, but also see them quickly realize just how amazing it is to live, study and teach on an alien world.

I wanna see Humans & Eridians joining forces and creating a massive space program with the goal of inoculating every star in the Milky Way that has been infected with the astrophage. I want to hear them say "the fact that there are three Systems with life this close to each other implies that the whole Galaxy is likely teeming with life- probably even whole civilizations. And none of them deserve to go through what we went through. Screw any ideas about a 'prime directive.' We CAN help, and we WILL help. Lets spend the next 1000 generations saving the galaxy, together."

I wanna see more of this world, generations after these two planets were saved by a pair of alien scientists who became best friends, and who each risked everything to make absolutely certain that the other's world was just as safe as their own. I wanna see these two great peoples coming out of this horrible generational trauma, coming together to celebrate the life that they all get to live with their newly-found cosmic neighbors.

This world makes me feel so hopeful and excited to see what these people can do with each other aaaaa

New headcanon time: When Bren's mother gets mad at him for "carrying on with that atevi woman," she doesn't mean Jago. I firmly believe that Bren and Jago are the perfect picture of discretion when theyre around others.

Bren's mother meant Ilisidi, and not only is Ilisidi aware, she thinks its funny as hell and keeps intentionally playing into it

okay but what if, before Grace dies, the Eridians make contact with ANOTHER intelligent alien race that happens to resemble humans more than they resemble Eridians. so Grace is called in to be on the team of Eridian diplomats, and he gets to facilitate even more positive interstellar diplomatic relations.

and Rocky is just hanging around in the back glaring at the other new alien race like “alright you can BORROW my Grace but you don’t get to keep him. we’re not like the humans, we are not throwing away a perfectly good Grace. don’t get any funny ideas. I’m listening to you (insert equivalent of the ‘I’m watching you’ gesture for a species that does not have eyes).”

I like to think that since Grace is a schoolteacher who never swears and Rocky is an engineer who does swear (a lot, I like to believe), and neither of them are translators/linguists and they were mostly focused on getting the science vocabulary right, that means that a few years later, a hypothetical first (technically second) contact message from Erid to Earth might sound to us something like: "Well, hello there, human friends of Earth! Golly, those astrophage sure were some pesky little buggers, right? We noticed your sun has started to regain its luminosity so that means our intergalactic group project was a success for both of our planets! Top marks! Golden star sticker! Smiley face sticker! Anyway, now that that little pickle is over, we'd love to remain in contact with you! Kind regards, the people of Erid". Meanwhile, if humans were the ones to send a first (technically second) contact message to Eridians, it might sound to them like "Hey, 'sup, fuckers. We the motherfucking humans of Earth are fucking ecstatic to know our badass Eridian neighbors also managed to deal with the $*%€$#@*& astrophage crisis. I shit you not, for a while things here were a bit [thirty seconds of unairable audio], but now that that clusterfuck is over we'd love to keep in touch with you! Ok, byeee bitches, xoxo humanity"

Feeling emotional about the concept of Rocky being able to hear Grace’s heartbeat. Like what do you mean he was alone for 46 years and he had no choice but to sleep without anyone watching, terrified cause he’s never had to do that before in his life, but then he befriends this alien and he’s weird and soft and his internal organs make noise and maybe that’s annoying at first but it becomes something soothing, a steady presence, always there. It speeds up when he gets nervous or excited and steadies out, calm and predictable, when he sleeps - and it’s always the first thing Rocky hears when he wakes up.

And what do you mean that the first time Rocky fell asleep after they parted ways to save their respective planets, he had to wake up to silence instead of Grace’s heartbeat.

The Cameron brothers have, I think it is safe to say, the same taste in human women. Coincidentally kind of dogshit taste, as it turns out.

However, Bren seems to have fairly good taste in atevi, and has a much happier/healthier/whathaveyou relationship with Jago than he ever did with a human. It stands to reason that Toby may possibly be the same (bad taste in humans, excellent taste in atevi) and is mainly held back by the whole "not the paidhi" thing. He just isn't around atevi regularly enough.

Toby does, however, have access to some atevi throughout the series, mainly within Bren's social circle. So, may I present, as suggested by a dear friend:

Been playing around with concept art for Bren’s various hairstyles throughout the series. (Also he’s definitely prematurely greying-my man’s cortisol levels are so high all the time).

And another thing is that. ok so manchi has been narrated by brenthoughts as something thats sort of unpredictable, right? At least to bren it is unpredictable. And bren, tabini, illisidi, and geigi all have this perfect storm of manchi right now, which is probably pretty intimidating to anyone outside of it. Like theyre the popular kid clique and their combined charisma is literally taking the world.

So for geigi to risk setting off some kind of weird friendship/manchi-like reaction in bren is sooo trustworthy of him. Geigis guild was probably like ok brens cool and all, but we all need him attached to tabini and illisidi and cajeiri. What if he _attaches_ to you or something??

And geigis like nah, brens cool. Hes chill. He wont start liking me more than anyone else. Probably.

Anyway like ~20 years of living around atevi and brens just made his frist friend!!

Yes! And they're right to worry—or they would be, if Bren was an ateva, or really most other humans. But Bren Cameron, Atevi Catnip, does not make a new friend at the expense of his existing friends.

In man'chi, as I understand it through the brenthought narration, it is dangerous for Geigi to risk attaching himself to Bren, directly, particularly because of the connections to Tabini and Ilisidi and the future aiji-meni, unless they are all interweaving threads under one controlling man'chi. And it is clear that, while Tabini functions as that, the real man'chi uniting Bren and Geigi—and for that matter Tatiseigi!—is Ilisidi, and the feat Tabini accomplished by using Bren to bring Ilisidi in from outside has in a way set himself adjacent to her.

Which most of the time would not have, and has never historically, worked! They should be fighting. Adding more to them, should lead to worse fighting. Building a complex of man'chi that is fixed firmly on the dual constellation of Tabini and Ilisidi, held together by Bren Cameron, is utter screaming atevi lunacy, headed for violent catastrophe ... except it's not. Everyone brought into it, their Guild sees tables stacked high with china, and expects catastrophe, and then ... it doesn't happen. Things become more stable, except among the outside opposition.

Every time Tabini and Ilisidi fight, every time that Ilisidi and Damiri fight, should send simultaneous frissons of intrigue and terror down every atevi spine. But there's never a sorting-out like in the machimi. Nobody really understands how or why, but they know it's Bren Cameron, whether they're for it or against it.

And Geigi ... Geigi understands instinctively, after Bren saved him from Hanks and utter ruin, that there's something here outside of his comprehension. Something powerful. Something not within man'chi, but also not in competition with it, in this constellation. That there could be no question of him having man'chi to Bren Cameron, that there should be no question of Bren Cameron developing man'chi towards him ... but if it did happen, it could knock over all of those tables! Except it isn't man'chi.

And even if Bren starts liking Geigi more than basically any other ateva except seven in the whole world, his aishid and his aijiin? Even if Bren and Geigi begin to see each other when they look at one another, as they do? They will both still run for the leader in compatible ways. It is the weirdest thing, for Geigi and Bren Cameron to become equals, peers, willing to do almost anything for one another—but what is that, if not friendship? And for Geigi then to become stationmaster, to become in his own way the fixed sum balancing the equations of humans and atevi in orbit? What is that, if not Geigi choosing to embody what he has seen in his friend?

Perhaps Geigi would not put himself between Bren and a bullet, the way Bren would for Geigi without a second thought. (Neither of them should, that's what Guild are for! And besides, Geigi is a large ateva and not fast.) But they have and do put everything they have at one another's disposal over and over again, for very different sets of emotional reasoning, and they do it all while in total agreement about the overarching direction of man'chi and what must in all circumstances be upheld about the world as it is, and what must be changed about the world as it is, to become the world they both see needs to be realized.

And all because Bren looked at Geigi and thought he needed to be saved, and Geigi looked at Bren and thought "I am going to become obsessed with this amazing little human now. This better not awaken anything in me ...." And maybe only a Rational Determinist could see it through that way.

If i were in the Foreigner universe, I'd make a social media post like "I dont normally consider myself a size queen but atevi got me feeling ambitious" and no more than 15 minutes later I'd get an email informing me im being expelled from the foreign office program
