I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
i have a more selfish (? maybe) question for you,, do you have specific voices you have thought up or associated with the cast?
i have a difficult time thinking of more than two different voices with non-american accents and they all turn british and idk enough celebs or voice actors to pick any out💔💔

They’re all from the Highlands, so they share that softer Highland Scots accent rather than really strong Glaswegian or Dundonian accents. (Except the Fraser family they’ve got ties to Glasgow!)
There isn’t a whole lot of media broadcasting Scottish accents that are younger but I’ve been watching a lot of older films trying to find actors and actresses who match the voices to my cast so I’m on the lookout don’t worry😌.
Sam Heughan has a beautiful Scottish accent but that’s more of a mixture because he stayed in Edinburgh from 12 - after he moved from the southwest of Scotland. Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) has a great Scottish lowland accent that I think I like for an older character I have in mind.
Everyone’s voice still has its own personality so I’ll try describe that below!:
🌲 Lockie — Calm, steady and reassuring. He’s got the kind of voice that naturally quietens a room without him trying. Not especially deep, just warm and dependable. Voice of a leader.
🔥 Roo — Rougher than the others. His voice is usually a little hoarse, like he doesn’t sleep enough. He swears more, speaks faster when he’s emotional, and laughs with his whole chest.
☀️ Finlay — He talks quickly, interrupts himself, and you can hear him smiling half the time. He’s definitely the loudest Gilchrist. Always up for a joke and kinda takes nothing serious.
🌙 Iona — Same Highland accent as Finlay but much more measured. Iona has quite a strong voice— she’s very confident in everything she says and fiery.
🌺 Màiri — Sunflower energy, confident and expressive. She talks with her hands, has absolutely perfected the sarcastic “aye, alright then,” and could win an argument before the other person even realises they’re in one.
🌿 Eilidh — Soft-spoken without ever sounding timid. She’s the person everyone confides in, so her voice is really calming. Can be the leading voice if needed.
📖 MC — This one’s actually up to you<3 one of MCs parents is Scottish no matter what so you can be from elsewhere and have a mixture of an accent. If you’re not solely from Scotland your accent will be perceived differently which is always fun.
Comparing to existing accents, much less broad than Glasgow or Dundee, a bit softer and more melodic. Lots of “aye”, “wee”, “ken”, “dinnae”, but not so much that every sentence is written in dialect. I want them to sound authentically Scottish without making readers who aren’t from Scotland feel like they need a translator too much.
i’ve been replaying one of my favorite IFs lately, and even though it isn’t really in the same genre as yours, i think your MC might become one of my favs bc they remind me a little of the MC in that game and i love it soo much ❤️ (it’s We Wretched Creatures btw)

Every relationship in The Brae Weans is written very differently, it’s hard to give a perfect answer right now but I’m gonna try my hardest because it is still very much more a coming-of-age story for the MC — bonds develop slower because of the MC and the life they’ve had and still are going through.
Iona has a preference towards females. However, she lives with her grandmother at home who is plainly put of an older generation. Finlay enjoys connection with anyone— he has some character development to do before that.
And favourite RO— ahhh, a writer’s favourite question. 😂 It changes all the time depending on whose scene I’m writing which yes is a cop out answer lol.
Currently, I do love Màiri just because I finished her introduction scene a few days ago and I think she’s very funny…but just wait I’ll write more of some of their tragic backstories and fall into a pit for them😌💕
