thinking about how a lot of older (90s/early 00s) chilean urban music are proudly and militantly lower class. showing and even bragging about poverty and resilience. and nowadays its all about noveau rich bullshit about expensive cars despite having similar humble beginnings under capitalism induced poverty.
current trap trends are utterly toothless and in a way reactionary.
kid voodoo you will never in a million years be panteras negras

los panteras were one of the first rap acts in chile. violently militant in their communism and activism for poor families in the roughest parts of the city. in their song insurreccion mic dos mill they cite the palestinian and vietnamese people as inspirations of rebellion and resistence.
stills from kid voodoo & jere klein's whiskey a la roca. voodoo and klein are two of the biggest names in chilean trap music. this was filmed in lo barnechea, the richest part of santiago. they sing about parties and money and shit like that.
i know theyre not technically the same type of music, but there is no trap without boom bap. there is a thorough line between los panteras and these dudes.
and its not like im handpicking the bands either. during the 90s los panteras were THE name in hip hop. them, tiro de gracia and makiza were the biggest names in the scene. and all three of those acts were explicitely political. all three were proud of their humble beginnings. one of tiro de gracia's biggest song was called joven de pobla (roughtly kid from the hood) and the lyrics were about not abandoning your roots.
nowadays kids get a couple of viral songs and they leave immediately for las condes and vitacura.
i hate it man
