I think Bruce is good at cooking. But I also think that normal cooking is boring to him. He doesn't need to cook every day because he has Alfred, so when he is in the mood for cooking, that usually means he wants to ✨️experiment✨️ Make ice cream out of wood. Try making a steak in a blast furnace. A tomato soup based bread? Sure, why not. Some of these experiments fail, as experiments do, which is what gained him the reputation of a terrible cook within the family. He feels weirdly connected to and protective of this poor little dead Robin, and he doesn't understand why everyone looks at him like he's crazy when he plays with his little older brother.
And in the little doodle thingy Jason is a bit angry but he's also very sad his pops can't see him and thinks his younger big brother is crazy because he sees him.

Imagine him crying as he's desperately trying to clean up the vandalism done on Harvey's poster. Like, just the image of Brucie Wayne crying in public for the first time while cleaning up a ruined poster like a desperate little thing despite knowing it won't be able to change reality.

Bruce (wrongfully, he can admit that now) agreed with people who thought there was something wrong with Jason. He didn’t understand. Sure, Dick was an angry kid, but his anger was targeted. It was revenge. It was familiar to Bruce’s own anger. He understood it. He was able to related to Dick, to guide him. Jason was different. Bruce didn’t understand. He didn’t understand, just like the rest of the upper class Bruce brushed shoulders with. He didn’t understand, just like Jim who despite all the corruption of the police force still had respect for the law and lived a fairly normal life with the means to take care of a family that he loved.
Bruce didn’t understand. He never frequented crime alley. And when he did, he never stayed longer than it took to rescue a child who of course would be acting out in distress from a rogue attack. He never visited the orphanages he funded longer than it took to take a tour and maybe read a book. He never lingered. For all Bruce was a detective, he didn’t understand because he never observed.
There was nothing wrong with Jason. He was a child. He was traumatized. He grew up in a bad situation. He didn’t trust adults. He didn’t trust cops. He didn’t trust where his next meal came from. He didn’t trust kindness without expectations of something in return. He could only bluster through with bravado and anger because showing fear put him at risk.
There was nothing wrong with Jason. But Bruce had bought into the narrative. And perhaps, kept buying into it rather than admit his own fault when Jason came back. It was easier to accept all Jason had changed if he believed Jason had always been that way. That maybe if Bruce hadn’t believed it then, it wouldn’t be true now.
Jason, returned, is still trying to prove that there’s nothing wrong with him.
Maybe one day Bruce will see that he is wrong now, too.
I wish we had more pre-jaybin. No, not the “broken, irreparable kid from before he met Batman”, but my plucky, tough boy who stole Batman’s tires and intended to stop a robbery all on his own. I wish we had more Jaybin, no, not the “reckless, angry, defiant kid who gave Bruce and Alfred such a headache”, but my brave, smart, talented, selfless, kind, and adorable boy. I wish we had more Jason, no, not the– *looks at his version seen in various comics with endless and plenty bad labels, constantly shifting roles, or portrayals where he’s crude, stupid, ugly, or get beaten up terribly by Batman and grimaces* no, none of that, and I’d like a writer who doesn't hate him so much, thanks.
Jason is a victim of classism and I will never shut up about it he liked literature and school and he challenged Bruce's views as a privileged man and they could not handle him
