So I keep seeing things like "it has no plot" or "just sex and no plot" about Heated Rivalry and I don't understand. Like, the romance is the plot. Two closeted idiots meet and have sex and slowly fall in love despite being from extremely different backgrounds and worlds and playing for rival teams is actually quite a lot of plot actually? What are people expecting? Heists? Aliens? Spies? Watching them both navigate their emotions is more exciting to me than most action movies. The sex is just a bonus (and a legitimate emotional storytelling tactic, in book and show).

Gonna add to this because people clearly don’t understand subtext. I think recent media has become so dumbed down that everything has been stated out in the open, so when things aren’t—like in heated rivalries—people get upset because they can’t understand. Something I think that is truly beautiful about this show is the subtlety, and what is said in the actions, so small movements, and characteristics, and silence, rather than what’s spoken. I believe that’s another reason why this show hit everyone so hard, because it is not some dumbed-down show that has just been made for money. There is love and care behind it, which is so crucial and, nowadays, has been dismissed from so many shows.

I think there’s also something to be said about the cultural differences between hetero and queer relationships. From my experience, queer sex often builds intimacy and connection, and makes you closer to your partner, developing the relationship and a deeper bond. While straight sex is portrayed more often than not as meaningless or as an escape from emotion (which is sad and isn’t always true in life), sex is a connection and beautiful.

The sex is a major part of the plot, and so are silences, and I think people have become so self-absorbed and unaware that they can no longer comprehend this, which is really sad. The fact that people complain that this show isn’t enough, or that there is no plot, is really disheartening because it’s so untrue. And I can understand this show not being someone’s cup of tea, but it’s so integral for people to understand the intelligence behind this piece, and how the unsaid speaks more than the said ever could… not to mention the score and the lighting!
