thinking about phm from rocky’s perspective. your planet is dying. your species builds a spaceship to save it. they’ve never been to space before. it’s rushed and imperfect. you are brave and you are the best engineer on the planet so you join. you leave behind your mate and a world you love.

things go wrong. you watch 22 of your friends die slow, agonizing deaths. you don’t know why. you are supposed to fix things and you can’t fix them.

you are alone. you arrive but you are alone. you are not a scientist. even if you could find a way to save your planet you don’t know how to get home. you can’t call for help. you are alone for 46 years and no one is there to watch you sleep.

one day another spaceship appears. it’s not from your planet. there is an alien inside. you are nothing alike. he is cold and leaky and grumpy and bad at math. his planet is also dying. he is also alone. you have so much in common. you are not alone anymore.

the alien helps you find the solution. you become best friends. he almost dies and you don’t hesitate to save him even if it kills you. you give him a chance to go back to his home. he shows you how to get back to your home. you say goodbye to your best friend forever.

you are on your way and full of hope. your species is saved. but things go wrong again. you are stranded again, this time with no fuel. you don’t know why. you can’t fix anything. again. you nearly die trying. you are alone and hurt and your friend is gone and you’re impossibly far from home. you failed.

then one day you hear something outside. you turn your radio on. your friend came back to save you. you go home together.
