Ok, I know next to nothing about horticulture but I do know that the English term for this is pollarding! It’s often done with things like willow, hazel or ash and is done above head height to prevent wild animals from eating the shoots! If it’s done at ground level it’s called coppicing - both give you a lot of long straight branches easily. Coppiced/pollarded wood is often used in the British countryside for making fences - just bundle them all up and weave!
Very very cool that two completely separate cultures have both got the same technique. I’d love to hear about any other terms for this.
