Woah mama we all go to hell
Update to this post- Sinners had the best opening weekend for an original film in over a decade.
It's topped not one, but *two* Jordan Peele horror hits.
Also part of the reason it's success is being undersold is likely because Coogler made an unprecented deal with Warner Bros. where he gets ownership of the movie back after 25 years so the execs are panicking.
An anonymous exec told Vulture that this could be “the end of the studio system.”
Coogler stay winning.
You ever hear that old chestnut about how most people neglect the part of the story of Icarus where he also had to avoid flying too low, lest the spray of the sea soak his feathers and cause him to fall and drown? You ever think about how different the world would be if Icarus died that way instead? If the idiom was to Fly To Close To The Sea? A warning against playing it far too safe, about not stretching your wings and soaring properly? You ever think about how Icarus died because he was happy?
If I told you I wrote this while thinking about the dangers of being visibly trans vs never trying to transition at all, happiness followed by a bright, burning end, smacking hard against a concrete ocean vs playing it too safe and never flying high, dooming you to a cold, crushing end from drowning, You'd believe me, right?
happy 9th anniversary undertale!!!
Sagas mind place happening in real time is so funny to me because it implies that she will just space out for a couple of minutes during conversations with strangers, like her eyes just glaze over and then when she comes back to reality she knows that you killed that hamster you had in 3rd grade

how am i supposed to move on from this
Do you know this SFX? #411
I know where it's from
It sounds familiar
I've never heard this
Deeply fascinated by the people who heard rightful criticism of generative AI (i.e. chatgpt etc) and decided all machine learning is evil or something. You sound like a scifi villain. You sound like the character who's wrong on an episode of star trek. That's not how this works
I feel like some people's takeaway from the 2020s AI Boom and Immediate Backlash has been "the computers... are evil?" When it's more like. The computers are tools and the entities with the most money to develop them are megacorporations with 0 regard for ethics re: data privacy, plagiarism, wasting a fuckload of energy, etc. Like it's not sentient and it's not gonna Get You it's just our cool new future capitalistic exploitation. You're getting mad at a hammer instead of the guy hitting people with it
Tacking on that last metaphor: hammers are for driving nails, not hitting people. AI is for identifying cancer cells and finding a particular item out of 100,000 image files, not stealing people’s art and getting facts wrong in search results.
am i too late to share my favorites (part 1)

couldve added portal but the venn diagram is already crowded. and dream bbq. but alas
i think the real question is what ISNT tftgs
Tales From The Gas Station was originally a creepypasta posted on a blog website called gasstationjack.com, but author Jack Townsend wrote four books for it. the blog is still updating and a great place to start.
the plot line for the first blog story and volume is pretty simple. Jack Townsend is a terminal insomniac (fatal familial insomnia, he is just waiting out his death) working at the shitty gas station at the edge of town, and weird things happen there. a deer on its hind legs walked into the store, got a water bottle, and quite literally coughed up a dollar to pay. the bathroom mirror has a half a second delay. and a weird smell is wafting up from the floor.
there’s everything from customers giving Jack unwanted fortunes, to sex cults and uncanny therapists. from gods of gods to undying politicians.
if you want a good laugh, youtube channel Mr. Creepypasta does amazing readings of the blog posts (he also narrated the audiobooks). id start with either the 7 hour full story if you have time to spare, or Something Weird Came Into the Gas Station if you just want to dip your toes into the possibly-mythological sticky-horse water.
i love tftgs dearly, it’s seriously sooo good
I'm an adult
You're a dumbass who the fuck says something like that
a few months ago my friend called me and told me she was moving back up near me from 7 hours south in the middle of nowhere and asked if i would help her because she couldn’t move the furniture by herself and the town was so small there was no moving company (there were actually only 5 or six businesses in the whole town including both restaurants) and she had no one else down there to ask.
And even though money is pretty tight for her, she told me I could name my price if I would help her, because it was so far away.
I told her she was a dummy for thinking i would take her money but that i would accept the traditional helping-a-friend-move price: a meal (i know she would feel wrong about herself if she didn’t do something for me in return, that’s just how she is) Tradition suggests pizza and beer, we opted for enchiladas and a margarita.
we crashed on the floor of the empty place and left back north in the morning - when we got back to the city three more friends met us at her storage place (the place she was moving into wouldn’t be vacant for a couple months) and we started to move all her stuff up to a storage room on the THIRD FLOOR (because large city storage places be like that)
we had just taken the first box out of the truck when the (only) lady working there walked by and told us they closed in an hour and twenty minutes, and she couldn’t stay even a little late because she had to get to her other job.
One hour twenty minutes. To completely un-jenga a large uhaul and re-tetris it back into a similar sized room on the third floor.
We all just, shared a look, took off hoodies, and got the fuck down to business.
It was actually.. I still cherish look we passed around. The tiny eyebrow quirks and chin nods. The eye glints. The bigger breath we each took as we prepared to kick it up several gears. That moment of wordless connection, when we all just silently agreed that we were damn well going to do the impossible and didn’t even waste the time it would take to say anything, just got to it.
And we did it too. Finished with exactly two full minutes to spare. And then we all went for dinner and drinks to celebrate. And my friend’s friends that came to help? Two of them were acquaintances/friends of mine already. Like I lived with one for a year a decade ago sort of thing. But this experience? Brought us all closer. Made myself a new friend too.
And the friend i helped move? She and I are closer than ever because of it.
When i left our storage success diner to go home, she asked me again if I was sure i wouldn’t take any money.
I said “I ever tell you when I was 22 I went down to Hollywood to try that scene out? Anyway ten months later, when I just couldn’t do it anymore, and needed to come back, I called one of my best friends and said i can’t do this anymore i need to come back. You know what he said? He said: I’ll be there tomorrow. Not how much will you pay me, not what do i get out of it, not will you be able to cover my gas, just: I’ll be there tomorrow. Okay? You’re my friend. If you need help, I’m going to be there”
If helping someone move ruins your friendship, you’re doing at least one of those two things very wrong.
Reblogging for the last line
daylight savings is actually truly one of the most evil things in the world. just casually forcing us to confront the fact that time is fake while torturing insomniacs, autistics and schoolchildren across the globe. when will the agony end
ideas conceived by the truly deranged
America mostly observes DST, but landlocked Arizona does not, but inside Arizona is the Navajo Nation which DOES, but inside the Navajo Nation is the Hopi Reservation which DOES NOT.
Its worse when you realize that there's multiple layers of "Navajo nation inside Hopi Reservation, and Hopi Reservation inside Navajo nation" going on
The surrounding pink/brown is Arizona
The top right yellow corner is the Navajo nation
Any pink/brown inside the yellow corner is Hopi reservation
Any further yellow inside that is further pieces of the Navajo nation inside the Hopi reservation
And I think there's even a city or two inside those yellow pieces that are Hopi, but are too small to see on the map
I calculated once that you could travel in a straight line between two points in Arizona and have the current time change 10-12 times because of this
I had to find it. and yes, if you include the border between AZ and NM, you would have to change your clock a total of 12 times, or 11 if you're only counting time changes within state lines.
credit for the house vicodin prescription goes to u/marcusbechtel on the HouseMD subreddit, the wilson image came from the House wiki, and of course the whole thing is inspired by the classic video "Every episode of House ever". The rest was all me.
