Maybe there was something Ruby wasn’t getting, maybe she wasn’t making a connection or maybe she had to be in the position to understand what Jenny was going through, but still it didn’t make sense to her. Why would she want to be around people who treat her like shit? Because although she got their attention for all of five seconds, and those five seconds may make her feel great, the rest of her time is being spent feeling like shit. Jenny’s words made Ruby flinch—something that’s never happened. What’s there to be proud of? Though it was a blow to Brooklyn, Ruby took it personally, almost and it actually kind of hurt. “Maybe the fact that you aren’t someone’s bitch? There’s more pride in Brooklyn being free than running around doing someone’s errands, even if it is on the oh-so-amazing Upper East Side.” Her eyes narrowed at the girl in front of her, wondering if she was even the same girl she called her best friend, “Because it’s my fault that my parents made us move, sorry I forgot. Are you really that dependent on people that you need to find a new group of friends—friends that treat you like shit, no less—as soon as I’m not around so you can feel secure, Jenny?” To say Ruby was angry was an understatement, not only was Jenny changing in a way that isn’t necessarily beneficial, but she was putting some of the blame on Ruby and dissing Brooklyn. Not cool. “You don’t hang out with them. They keep you around because you do things for them, it’s different. If the challenges you desire are writing calligraphy on party invites or getting girls coffee and yogurt for breakfast, then I really hope you’re happy because at the rate you’re going, you’ll be a great personal assistant someday. Do you really know what you’re doing, Jenny? Because I don’t think you realize that these people don’t care about you. You mean nothing to them. Do you know why? I’ll tell you—because they’ll find so many other girls just like you, willing to do whatever they want just for so much as a smile from Blair Waldorf or who the fuck ever. You’ve been reduced to nothing more than a pathetic little slave and you don’t even realize it.”
