My FAVORITE THING is researchers who wholeheartedly embrace the Ms. Frizzle aesthetic and wear their field of study on their literal sleeve. Everyone in the invasive crayfish consortium has tiny lobster-print shorts or socks. All the middle-aged dad scientists here at the lab have shirts with fish and/or fishing tackle patterns on them. My moss specimen and ammonite earrings keep getting noticed by women who are wearing silver fishbone-shaped or native plant-themed earrings themselves. Every single person on the outreach team has at least one shirt with an anchor pattern on it from Old Navy, and almost all the younger researchers have tattoos featuring their research interests ā one fisheries biologist has a half-sleeve of native species she literally uses as an outreach tool. We are self-aware and having a blast with it, honestly.
I adore the Ms. Frizzle aesthetic
Nerdy Fact #1501: The producers of Star Trek included scenes of overt sexuality to deflect the focus of NBCās Broadcast Standards Office censors from other controversial aspects in certain episodes, like blatant allegories of the Vietnam war and racism.

a little tasteful sideboob and no one will notice weāre telling the government to go fuck itself
Happy bisexual visibility day to all the bicons out there! Keep embracing your bisexuality and being proud of who you are, we have such a rich and diverse history and an amazing community behind it, to be a part of it is one of the greatest honors and we deserve to be loud about it! Donāt be afraid to be unapologetically you ššš
WATCH THIS: MAN SHUTS DOWN ANTISEMITIC WHITE POWER PREACHER
One of my friends in the Boston area took this video and gave me permission to post it. She writes:Ā ā I stood there for twenty minutes, easily. Hitler Youth kept trying to preach about āthe evils of the Jewsā and the big guy barely let him get a word in edgewise. At one point, the big guy yelled, āI will be here ALL DAYā and the crowd cheered.ā
I promise this will be the best thing you see today.
Whereās a goddamn bullhorn when you need it?
wow that preacher is probably shitting his pants low key with some big ass biker that close to his faceĀ
Caption for those who need itā the guy in the suit is saying shit like āall races must serve us as put here by Godā and a lot of racist/anti Semitic drivel.
Every time he opens his mouth to speak though, the biker yells āAHHHHHHH!!!ā Until the man in the suit shuts up again. When the man in the suit takes a breath and opens his mouth, the biker doesnāt even let him get started and just screams āAHHHHHāā¦. This happens a few times.
The guy in the suit plows ahead but the biker screams and says āNo no no no!!!ā
I love biker dude
Make racists afraid again.
Um, sorry, but the guy in the suit deserves to speak his opinions. Howād you like to get screamed at everything time you spoke about what you are passionate about? Iām not saying I agree with his opinion, but that doesnāt make shutting him down like this right. Freedom of Speech. Just agree to disagree and walk away.
1) Freedom of Speech means you have the right to speak your mind without being punished or censored by the government. It does not mean other people have to listen to you, and it does notĀ mean they canāt yell over you if youāre saying something disgusting and inflammatory. The Biker Dude has just as much right to do what heās doing as the Neo-Nazi. Nobodyās right is being infringed upon here.
2) The guy isĀ āpassionate aboutā hating and inciting violence against Jews. Iām passionate about information literacy, candle-making, and giving snuggles to my pet rabbit. Thereās a fucking difference, there.Ā
3)Ā āAgree to disagreeā is something you say when two people canāt come to a consensus over whether or not The Empire Strikes BackĀ is the bestĀ Star WarsĀ movie. Itās not something you say when one person is Jewish and the other person believes Jews are a evil satanic cabal trying to enslave the white race who must be stopped at all costs. Thatās not anĀ āagree to disagreeā topic. We donātĀ āagree to disagreeā over the issue of whether or not Jews are people. We donāt āagree to disagreeā over whether or not black people, immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ folks, etc. are deserving of basic human rights. These things are not up for debate, and there is no middle-ground to be had with people who think otherwise.Ā
āI canāt remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; youāre saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that itās not literally illegal to express.ā ā Randall Munroe

This reminds me of a party I went to last year. I was standing with some friends, chatting, and someone said something that indirectly implied that sexism exists. Some trivial recounting of the basic facts of daily life for most women. Something so mild, so uncontroversial, so mundane that I donāt even remember what it was.Ā
Suddenly, this man standing on the outskirts of our conversational circle piped up withĀ āactually, I think men are more discriminated against than women these days.ā
Ā All conversation died.
I turned to look at him and he had this smug, insufferable grin on his face, relishing this moment, expecting us to waste our time and energy refuting this ridiculous thing he had just said.
The Devilās Advocate was among us.
And, in my mind, I saw the next 15+ minutes playing out. The parade of facts and statistics in a vain attempt to defend ourselves, our gender, and to prove that misogyny is real. The glib, snide denials from some shithead who is getting off on our pain and frustration. The Gish Gallop of bullshit that would take a whole evening to properly dismantle. It was depressing and overwhelming. I hated it. I had to kill it before it began.
So I looked him dead in the eye and I saidĀ āOK,ā shrugged, and just walked away.Ā
Nothing I have ever said to another human being has ever been so crushing. As I walked away, I watched the smug grin vanish and confusion and anxiety set in. The rest of the group turned their backs to him and carried on as if he had never spoken - as if he was invisible. He was still staring at me when I walked over to another friend and told her what he had said. I pointed him out for her and made direct eye contact with him while we both laughed.
tl;dr: Donāt feed the troll. Let it perish, cold and hungry, in the wasteland of your indifference. It is weak and you are strong. Live your best life.

Middle aged was like 12.
every year after you turn 17 you get further away from being the age of the dancing queen and thatās my least favorite thing about growing up
exCUSE ME. Ā DOES THIS LOOK LIKE THE FACE OF A WOMAN WHOāS CONCERNED ABOUT BEING TOO OLD TO BE THEĀ DANCING QUEEN??
Fuck your age, put on your high heeled boots and a pair of overalls and do Meryl Streep proud.
You are the dancing queen.
Hot take: Seventeen is the age at which you get crownedĀ the Dancing Queen.
Being older than that isnāt years away from being the Dancing Queen, itās how many years your reign has lasted.
On this date, September 21, 1967, 51 years ago, Fred Rogers walked into the television studio at WQED in Pittsburgh to tape the very first episode of Mister Rogersā Neighborhood, which would premiere nationally on PBS in February 1968. He became known as Mister Rogers, nationally beloved, sweater wearing, ātelevision neighbor,ā whose groundbreaking childrenās series inspired and educated generations of young viewers with warmth, sensitivity, and honesty.
For those of you who donāt know, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Rogers was not just a well loved and iconic TV show host, he was a hero to our city.
Rogers gaveĀ testimony, now famous (vids are posted online of it), advocating the government funding of childrenās television before the U.S. Senate. He made it a point to show and normalize children from all ethnicities on his show, and show children with disabilities (not common at the time). He tackled sensitive subject matter, like racism, war, death, etc. in a way that children could understand, without scaring them or making them feel bad in general. He was also a huge advocate for education, and teachers. I could go on and on about him, but basically: Everything this man did he did for children, and trying to make the world a better place for them.
When he passed away in 2003, the country mourned. But the city of Pittsburgh? Oh my God, I still remember it. Every local newspaper had him as the front page, detailing his life and work. At work all day, everyone was crying and talking about the show growing up. Reverend William Barker (Rogers was a Presbyterian minister as well) presided over a public memorial for him, which 2,000+ people attended, including Good Morning America. Sesame Street characters sang tribute music about him. Thereās now statues and permanent exhibits of him scattered throughout Pittsburgh⦠he was so important to my hometown, and to everyone else.
If you have the time, watch the filmĀ āWonāt You Be My Neighbor?ā that they made about him. Itās amazingly well done, and does him more justice than I could ever hope to.
RIP Mr. Rogers, thank you for all the memories <3

I was beginning to give up hope.
Gah! This post keeps crossing my dash today and I cannot deal with the damned FEELINGS it gives me. Because so much of this scene is overshadowed by the separation, which is understandable because itās heartwrenching. But this moment here, isolated⦠it really underscores where she is. This murder is closer to home than many are and sheās solved it (sheās Phryne FIsher, of course she has), but Jack⦠Jack and his distance, thatās not something she can solve. And sheās a little on edge and so HAPPY that her friend has arrived. One of the brilliant things about this show is that it doesnāt fall into the trap of holding romantic love over all other types, and in this tiny little moment you SEE what is on the line for her when Jack chooses to walk away.Ā
(Also, that dog earing of the book just brings me so much joy. Itās a fantastic little character detail)
