This month we're celebrating the Nebelung!

These Russian Cats are often referred to as a long-haired version of the famous Russian Blue. While the two breeds are related, it is not quite accurate on a genetic level. There is a Russian line of the breed that comes from Russian origins, but the breed currently showing in the US was cultivated out of a Black Shorthair cat and a Blue Longhair cat, creating a steel colored cat with a mid-length coat. Nebelung

This homestead dog hails from the southern states of the USA. It is one of the oldest dog breeds in the country, and as such has gone by many different names including the Southern Cur, the Yellow-Black Cur, the Florida Brown Dog (they are a contributing breed) and Caramelo Dog which a similar version of the Black Mouth that exists in Latin America. Black Mouth Curs are versatile and historically used for hunting, guarding, and herding. They are a beloved part of American history, households, and storytelling as it's believed that the title character in "Old Yeller" was also a Black Mouth Cur.

The German Wirehaired Pointer, otherwise known as the Deutsch Drahthaar, is a loyal and energetic gundog known for it's rough and rugged coat. The coat is designed for outdoor activity because it insulates against weather and protects against thorns and brambles. Although closely related to the German Shorthair Pointer, this is not simply a wirehaired variant. This month we're celebrating the Cymric!

The Cymric is essentially a long-haired Manx cat known for their bobbed or completely absent tails. While the Manx historically hails from the Isle of Man, the Cymric breed is a Canadian development, even if the name comes from Welsh origins. This is because prior to the Cymric's introduction as a breed, the long-haired variation was considered undesirable for Manx show cats.

Happy May everyone! This month we're celebrating the Drever!

The Drever is a Swedish dog breed acquired from Germany in 1910 and crafted specifically for deer hunting. The short legs were chosen on purpose to keep the Drever near the ground for scenting and to keep them from moving too fast toward the prey, as the Roe deer they help hunt are skittish and must be approached carefully. The name was chosen by a newspaper contest in 1947 and is derived from the Swedish word 'drev' which describes the type of hunt when the prey is driven toward the hunter. These are strong, hardworking dogs, beloved by their hunting companions, and rarely found as companion pets.

This month we are celebrating the Australian Mist cat!

The Australian Mist or Spotted Mist is a breed that hails from the great Down Under. It was crafted by breeding tabby cats with Abyssinian and Balinese varieties. Its no April Fool! This month we're celebrating the Volpino Italiano! A cousin of the Pomeranian from renaissance Italy!

The Volpino Italiano is a Spitz-type dog historically known for being small but but standing tall. Depicted by painters as early as the 1502, small white dogs of the type were common through Italy and used as guard dogs. The modern version of the Volpino is a result of restorative breeding and an attempt to save the breed from near extinction in the 1960s. The breed continues to grow especially in its native homeland where yearly registrations to dog clubs averaged around 160 in 2019.

The Aegean is a naturally occurring breed of cat indigenous to the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean Sea. Found along the coast of modern day Greece and Turkey, these ancient street cats roam feral greeting locals and tourists alike. They pay close attention to fishing ports and markets, but are just as happy as housecats. Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an ancient breed of no certain origin, but are closely associated to their cousin breed the English Springer Spaniel with whom they are often confused. They were known for their red and white piebald coat. Their tails are usually docked for show, but some countries make cosmetic docking illegal so many working members of the breed have a full plumed tail. The breed gained popularity in 1902 but wasn't added to the American Kennel Club until 1906. All along they have been loyal and affectionate hunting dogs and friends.

You can find three different piebald patch patterns of this Welsh Springer on my website along with tailed versions of the artwork. I have also added tails to my English Springer Spaniel designs so you can find those available as well!

The Tonkinese cat bears a strong resemblance to the Siamese and Burmese cat varieties, a trait that for a long time almost destroyed it. Native to Malaysia, the breed was folded into the similar breeds as variants for many years until a concerted effort of crossbreeding Siamese and Burmese to bring back Tonkinese traits saw the original breed established in 2001. The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three Poodle sizes! Unlike the larger sizes which were still used for work, the Toy was specifically honed to be a companion pet! This Toy is modeling the Continental Clip, which is the typical cut all the Poodles wear for dog shows. Miniature Poodle

The Miniature Poodle is the medium-sized version of this fluffy friend. Standing between 10 and 15 inches at the shoulder, Miniature Poodles have gained great popularity as household pets. They are extremely smart and very trainable. This poodle is sporting the Miami or Bikini clip. Poodles are one of the most famous and recognizable breeds in the world. They're synonymous with French high society, but theory has it that they were actually bred in Germany as water dogs. They are known for their thick, curly, hair-like coat that is famous for shedding less than furrier coats. This has led to a lot of cross-breeding to cultivate this coat as hypoallergenic. The largest type is the Standard Poodle that stands over 15 inches at the shoulder.

I have had Standard Poodles in my collection for years now, but I decided this month to update the artwork to my more current drawing style. The domestic cat or house cat, "felis catus," is the only truly domesticated cat species currently on earth. They were domesticated in 7500 BC, and have lived alongside humans as mousers, companions, and friends ever since. While they are social creatures, they are solitary hunters known for their lithe flexible bodies and retractable claws. Cats are very intelligent creatures, with cognition comparable to a young human child. They are proficient in problem solving, learn by observation and adapt to any scenario, which is one reason why they have endured so wonderfully for thousands of years.

Fiest Dog

This American dog breed dates all the way back to the founding of the country, that is mentioned in George Washington's diary as "a small foist-looking yellow cur." This trademark 'feistiness' has continued through generations, giving these ratters and game hunters a reputation for high energy and belligerence despite its small size. Feists are considered a "type" of dog that include scrappy little hunters like Rat Terriers, but the UKC recognizes two distinct lines of Feist - the Mountain Feist which is a more regulated breed standard with tall ears and docked tails, and the Treeing Feist which is a working-class dog that allows for more variety in size and presentation.

Mountain Feist

This month we're featuring the Domestic Longhair Cat

It is often suggested that cats were not domesticated, but instead domesticated themselves of their own volition. It makes sense why they would! Cats have been worshipped in ancient religions, treasured by human owners for centuries, and treated as princes and princesses every day... and rightfully so! Cats have been helpful to humans as both pest control agents and loving companions 1200 BC. While a "domestic cat" is not an official cat breed, all cats are treasures. This one has long hair.

Despite the "ch", the name of these small Belgian dogs is pronounced "Skipperkey"! They are closely related to the Spitz family and resemble a black Pomeranian with a full ruff around the neck. They are born with a long fluffy tail that curls over their backs, but are often docked very short to give them a round, tailless look. They originated back in the 1600s and have been incorrectly labeled as Belgian ship dogs. Research into their lineage finds they are more closely related to guard and herding dogs like the Belgian Shepherd!
