It has come to my attention that due to the more mentally taxing environment that has formed with the current patients, many of you have become rather anxious and/or frustrated. As such, I have been getting questions and requests concerning whether resources for therapy will be provided.

Unfortunately, our funds have been delicate and these requested resources will not be provided. To show you my sympathy I am making the decision to allow conversation between myself and staff members about these mental burdens.

Especially talk to me if you feel that you may make a rash decision based on these emotions. We can’t have anymore repeat incidents.

I think they are all far too interesting. To pick which one I find most bizarre would be doing a disservice. Not to them but to myself.

Though, I find Kirk Langstrom complicated. One could argue that he’s sane. And, for the most part, he is. I’ll admit that. Of course it remains that when he’s the “Man-Bat” it would be a ridiculous notion to call him anything close to sane. Not only that, he was the one who injected a scarcely tested serum into his veins, all by his own volition.

That’s already a tad complicated. Unfortunately there’s more to it than that. Since I’m ready to assume you don’t know a thing about bats despite your nickname, here are the facts.

Bats can and do carry diseases without being sick themselves. How, you might wonder? They don’t have an immune response, instead coexisting with the diseases that perpetuate their bodies. It’s a clever work of nature, yes, but leaves every other creature they come in contact with to suffer from the sicknesses the bats brought. Creatures such as my employees.

I consider Kirk Langstrom a biohazard when he is Man-Bat. As such, I have to supply proper PPE and vaccines to the doctors working with him. It still doesn’t stop something blood borne being contracted from the occasional attempted mauling.

When the man is restored to his proper form after one of his longer stints, we sometimes have to hospitalize him due to all the illnesses he’s contracted and how his mutated body let them fester. I do pity him. He didn’t mean to become this much of a hassle.

At least we can count on that, for a majority of the time, Mr. Langstrom knows to keep his claws to himself.

Well, Doctor Arkham, I think you’re underestimating how much I know about bats. I spend enough time in Gotham that I’ve picked up a few things.

For starters, bats are the only mammals capable of true powered flight, which is already impressive enough. They’re also incredibly important for ecosystems. Some species pollinate plants, others spread seeds and insect-eating bats save farmers ridiculous amounts of money every year by devouring pests.

And despite their reputation, less than one percent of wild bats carry rabies. Most bats would much rather avoid humans than bite them. Unfortunately, Kirk Langstrom isn’t exactly a normal bat, is he?

You’re also right about their unusual immune systems. They seem to tolerate viruses that would make other animals seriously ill. Scientists are still trying to figure out all the details. It’s one of the reasons bats got so much attention during the COVID era, and why researchers keep studying them today.

Of course, none of that is particularly comforting when the bat in question is seven feet tall, has claws and occasionally mistakes your employees for chew toys. I feel bad for Mr. Langstrom, though. Everything you’ve described sounds less like a malicious patient and more like a man trapped by a decision he desperately wishes he could take back.

Actually, that brings me to another question. You’ve worked with a lot of unusual patients. Which one surprised you the most? Not the most dangerous, not the most complicated… the one who turned out to be completely different from your first impression of them. I imagine someone in your position has had their assumptions challenged more than once.

And for what it’s worth, if there’s ever anything I can do to help with one of your more… difficult cases, feel free to ask. I can’t prescribe medication, perform therapy or fill out insurance paperwork… which I assume is the true nightmare of your profession, but I’m pretty good at tracking people down, gathering information and keeping everyone in one piece. In reality, I would consider him to be above average in the practice. He became incredibly wealthy based on the premise that the Batman is likely the same and his obsessive desire to mirror him. How anyone could consider becoming spontaneously affluent as failure is completely ridiculous! It’s clear that the other “rouges” are projecting their own short comings.

You could assist me by telling me what you are playing at. With the questions and the offer of helping me I get the suspicion there’s something you want. I’d prefer for you to ask for it straight rather than this faux bonding you’re trying to cajole me with. Furthermore, your admission of keeping “most everyone in one piece” still does not inspire confidence.

If anything, it sounds like his peers are measuring prestige while you’re measuring results. And honestly, the results speak for themselves.

Unfortunately Mr. Waylon Jones is getting actively worse. There’s been rumors of emerging cannibalistic tendencies. Have in mind that we’re doing all we can to prevent him from slipping further. I will not have Mr. Jones deteriorating mental condition be blamed on my Asylum.

He bit off my Head of Security’s hand recently as you’ve might have heard. We haven’t been able to locate where the hand went, either. I’m not sure what’s worse; that Waylon could have eaten it or the hand is somewhere in the asylum waiting to be found.

Despite what some of the papers may have you believe, there is not a pool in his room. That would require unnecessary upkeep and we don’t have the funds to hire something trivial like a pool attendant. Secondly, it would be enabling his whole crocodile schtick.

What I find most baffling is that he also appears to be transforming to be more crocodilian somehow. What was initially was a skin condition has become something much more similar to scales than it should naturally be. I also suspect that his ability to survive without oxygen underwater has been increased. Thinking about it now, I would like to test my theory but that would require a pool.

Now that I have humored your curiosity I ask that you understand that the nickname “Jerri” is reserved for close associates. “Doc” is rather unprofessional as well. Thank you.

Dr. Arkham often finds stress relief by walking the sands of one the few places where in the island’s landmass meeting the water didn’t result in a sheer cliff. She hadn’t believed seals lived in this area.

The reasonable thing to do is to not approach the creature and call animal control services to deal with it.

Optionally, Jeremiah suspects that it could soothe some recent fears that she isn’t a perfectly good human being if she were to help it. And additionally, it’s practically guaranteed that she saves the creature from its unfortunate situation, no need to worry about failure.

Feeling rather bold, the doctor approaches the animal cautiously, as not to scare it and avoid gaining her own injuries if it were to lash out.

He’s sensitive to light and noise, as anyone would imagine. Special accommodations are made to decrease stress with the aforementioned needs but I don’t think the sound proofing currently given is enough. The Man-Bat is more clever than I first presumed and occasionally, upon hearing people with intent to enter his chamber, will ambush my staff.

I was included in one of these incidents and though I made it out mostly uninjured I still spent the next week delirious with a fever. It was unnecessary humbling but a valuable lesson learned.

My next point; the cure needs to be given slowly over time and with sedatives to avoid causing Langstrom severe discomfort and possibly putting him in shock. I understand vigilantes think that they must neutralize him as quickly as possible, but I prefer that they bring him here instead and let us administer the cure.

Then again, I can’t convince them to stop attacking my inmates so there’s likely not much I can do than hope that their reckless actions don’t compound on Kirk Langstrom’s already existing trauma.

Of course, none of that is particularly comforting when the bat in question is seven feet tall, has claws and occasionally mistakes your employees for chew toys. I feel bad for Mr. Langstrom, though. Everything you’ve described sounds less like a malicious patient and more like a man trapped by a decision he desperately wishes he could take back.

Actually, that brings me to another question. You’ve worked with a lot of unusual patients. Which one surprised you the most? Not the most dangerous, not the most complicated… the one who turned out to be completely different from your first impression of them. I imagine someone in your position has had their assumptions challenged more than once.

And for what it’s worth, if there’s ever anything I can do to help with one of your more… difficult cases, feel free to ask. I can’t prescribe medication, perform therapy or fill out insurance paperwork… which I assume is the true nightmare of your profession, but I’m pretty good at tracking people down, gathering information and keeping everyone in one piece. Well, most everyone.

Drury Walker or, as how you know him, “Killer Moth” wasn’t too different from my expectations of him. However, he was singled out as a failure and laughingstock by his peers in crime. In reality, I would consider him to be above average in the practice. He became incredibly wealthy based on the premise that the Batman is likely the same and his obsessive desire to mirror him. How anyone could consider becoming spontaneously affluent as failure is completely ridiculous! It’s clear that the other “rogues” are projecting their own short comings.

You could assist me by telling me what you are playing at. With the questions and the offer of helping me I get the suspicion there’s something you want. I’d prefer for you to ask for it straight rather than this faux bonding you’re trying to cajole me with. Furthermore, your admission of keeping “most everyone in one piece” still does not inspire confidence.

I think they are all far too interesting. To pick which one I find most bizarre would be doing a disservice. Not to them but to myself.

Though, I find Kirk Langstrom complicated. One could argue that he’s sane. And, for the most part, he is. I’ll admit that. Of course it remains that when he’s the “Man-Bat” it would be a ridiculous notion to call him anything close to sane. Not only that, he was the one who injected a scarcely tested serum into his veins, all by his own volition.

That’s already a tad complicated. Unfortunately there’s more to it than that. Since I’m ready to assume you don’t know a thing about bats despite your nickname, here are the facts.

Bats can and do carry diseases without being sick themselves. How, you might wonder? They don’t have an immune response, instead coexisting with the diseases that perpetuate their bodies. It’s a clever work of nature, yes, but leaves every other creature they come in contact with to suffer from the sicknesses the bats brought. Creatures such as my employees.

I consider Kirk Langstrom a biohazard when he is Man-Bat. As such, I have to supply proper PPE and vaccines to the doctors working with him. It still doesn’t stop something blood borne being contracted from the occasional attempted mauling.

When the man is restored to his proper form after one of his longer stints, we sometimes have to hospitalize him due to all the illnesses he’s contracted and how his mutated body let them fester. I do pity him. He didn’t mean to become this much of a hassle.

At least we can count on that, for a majority of the time, Mr. Langstrom knows to keep his claws to himself.
