Field Recordings • Visual Art Jesse Paul Miller is an American visual/sound artist and musician who's been exploring many realms of creating, from drawing, painting and sculpture to audio releases, radio broadcasts and installation. Miller has been involved in a variety of music projects and bands, most notoriously Factums, who have, since 2004, released 6 albums featuring a unique mix of lo-fi punk, sound collage and noise, somewhat reminiscent of the musical areas explored by Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and The Residents. One of the many highlights in their discography, Alien Native, is available on the Siltbreeze label. Miller's other music projects and collaborations include work with Sun City Girls, Climax Golden Twins, Aframes, 4shadows, Dave Knott, Eric Lanzilotta, Robert Millis, and others. In 2005, Miller began a series of travels through Southeast Asia. During these trips he amassed a collection of field recordings and music which he has self-released in CD-Rs, now digitally available at his Bandcamp page. Selections from these recordings are now being released in December 2014 on the Sublime Frequencies label. You can listen to samples and order it at Forced Exposure.com. Miller’s visual work is based on themes relating to spirituality, location, memory, imagination, ephemera, and metaphysics; considering all to be layers of reference in which to combine. His work has been seen and heard in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and is included in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Western Bridge, and numerous private collections. His most recent body of paintings are inspired by his travels through Asia. He currently lives in Seattle, where he continues to draw, paint, play music and assemble recordings. In the constant pursuit in the attempt to represent the un-describeable which has been felt on my journeys..a collage of strange and wonderful sounds and some otherworldly vibrations captured from radio. Life is Music!
Recordings gathered in a valley in Huelo, Maui, 2010. Including the sound of the "kiva" or meditation dome as seen on cover image. Sounds assembled and layered to create both a document of place, and simultaneously an unreal poem relating to the energies and spirit of this location.
Full album download includes "The Hook of Maui", a separate piece recorded and assembled 2010 - 2014.

Recorded and assembled by Jesse Paul Miller, 2010.
A series of simple sound combinations which transform stereo speakers into instruments for pure sounds.
Transform your home stereo into a sound art installation.
The "Archive Series", [AS] shares my sound experiments and field recordings made in the past (between 1990 and the present) andl (mostly) previously un-heard, except for a handful of copies given out on cassette tape or cdr.
During a 4 month stay in Central Java in 2017, I was again reminded by daily exposure to a vast variety of musical sounds coming from radios and on the street, of the complex history of this island.
Needless to say, Java is an ancient crossroads, with culture rooted in Hinduism, Animism, Islam, and other beliefs; with the cross-pollination of these influences resulting in the complex current musical forms..
This is a compilation of re-combinative musics recorded in Solo (Surakarta), and Yogyakarta, Java, in 2013 & 2017. The tracks on this compilation were captured from multiple radio channels, using a small portable radio.
They fall into the descriptive categories of “Jathilan”, “Joget”, or “Karawitan”, “Wayang Orang”, “Wayang Kulit”, “Ketoprak”, “Campursari”, also..“Campur” which means “Mixed”.
Also, some traditional court music segments, radio fuzz and anomalies, spoken word in puppetry and plays, commercials, and..…
Although gamelan may be the most well known instrument from this region, there are also many instruments made from bamboo.. ancient ones made of this are purported to have existed even in the pre-history of the Hindu era in Java, 1000 years ago.
The intention of this mix is simply to share the “Rame” (lively joyful expression) and often more raw, innovative, and mysterious sounds created and utilized in the transmission of tradition and pure entertainment, in Central Java, 21st Century.

Also included are:
Live recordings of the sounds of food carts in Solo and Yogyakarta. Although maybe considered banal by some whom live with them, there is a massive variety of these, not just in Central Java, but the whole of the Indonesian Archipelago.
A few recordings of street musicians I captured are included; and a few from the Takbiran (Idul Fitri) festival in Yogyakarta in July of 2017.
All recordings are examples of what I found fun or interesting, this is a personal catalogue.
It is compiled for 60 minute cassette, hence the A/B sides.
My new compilation composed of a variety of un-heard Radio snippets and sounds from Southeast Asia! A vast world of unknown voices, skits, ghosts, and sounds from previously (and still) unknown locations can be heard. Gathered from radio, tape, and digital recordings, a fascinating addition too your mix can be found in this unique catalogue
Music from elsewhere and beyond for you to tune in, turn on, freak out, and go deep into the heart of creation at the center of the universe. Or something. 10pm tonight on WGXC, 90.7-FM in the Hudson Valley and streaming 24/7 at wgxc.org or UPDATE: download the podcast at the link below
