A few weeks ago I participated in a two week game jam with Steven Sugar and Spencer Winson! We made a game called “I’ll Kill The Last Alien”, a reverse bullet hell about The Berserker who is trying to survive on an alien world.

It was such an honour to work with Steven Sugar and turn his character concepts into 3D!

The first 3D illustration from my new series, transforming 2D backgrounds into low poly illustrations, is finally complete!

This one is the Cereal Bar from Bravest Warriors (from Season 1 Episode 9 entitled “The Cereal Master”).

I couldn’t pinpoint who the exact background designer is (if anyone knows, please tell me!), but this is probably one of my favourite backgrounds of any animated show. There is something so appealing about the futuristic yet dirty design of this kitchen. It’s really cool and I had a really fun time trying to re-create it. To the designer of this background: your work is awesome!

On a side note, transforming 2D images that were never meant to be 3D into 3D is definitely a challenge! A lot of creative cheating had to go into getting the camera to show as much of the scene as it does, and even then, the angle doesn’t completely match the original design, but I think I captured the general idea (I hope!).

Now on to my next project! Which background should I pick next?...

I feel like looking at these two renders is a bit like playing Where’s Waldo, but there are a couple subtle changes that I think make a big difference. The top render is my most recent, and I think most closely matches the original design.

Next I’ll be adjusting a few of my material settings and adding one or two last modelling details before separating out my render layers.

I’m pretty happy with my progress so far! The lighting is a lot warmer now, and I think I’m starting to capture the feel of the original design.

I can’t describe how exciting it is to see my 3D creations coming to life! RenderMan has been super intuitive so far, and considering I am teaching it to myself by trial and error, I’m pretty happy with the direction this project is going so far!

On a side note, it’s hard to appreciate how many liberties you can take as a 2D artist until you have to convert a 2D design into 3D. There is a lot of perspective cheating going on in this image!

I’ve been missing in action the past few months here due to several months of very difficult family issues. My mom passed away in November, and since then my art has taken a back seat.

I’ve been working on several projects recently, and am looking forward to posting new content more regularly starting today. Thanks to everyone for your support. I’m excited to share my new work with you!
