descript: jessamine at her core is absolutely desperate to be liked. she affixes her whole sense of worth to what people think about her, and when they even dare to appreciate someone else more? it's a complete blow to her self esteem. she's prone, as a result, to incredible jealousy - and previously to mimicking the behaviour of others, more popular than her, in order to try and gain affection. in fact, as she's gotten older, her tactic has changed into inventing a whole exaggerated persona for herself, a zooey deschanel style appropriation of the tropes common to coming of age movies. somehow, in jessie's mind, creating this offbeat and eccentric personality, a portrait of the girl she wants to be, partly in fear that were she to be herself, any similarities to others would leave her failing to measure up, leave her left behind. fear of missing out is a fundamental principle of jessamine's psyche. she can't say no to any party, to any drug - she can't face anyone, ever, having more fun than her. ultimately, jessamine is pure self absorbed narcissist. in her mind, she is the main character. as much as she might put on a facade of caring, she only cares about others in relation to herself - she wants to be liked universally, and yet she doesn't particularly care for anyone, only seeing them as new things to collect, new admiration to gain. as a result, she's unreliable, jumping from person to person until she can fuck, lie, or force her way to the top of the proverbial food chain.

bio: [t/w for transphobia and alcoholism mention]
jessamine was born in tampa to parents whose relationship was already on the rocks. the age gap between her parents, coupled with elise's accidental pregnancy necessitating their hasty marriage, seemed to cause nothing but arguments. a move to miami three months after her birth, for a new job in a bank on her father's part and a new start on her mother's, was meant to save the family. for a time, it worked.
they got, in jessamine's mind, a good eight years stretch after the fresh start. even if it was never perfect, arguments continuing long into the night, words she was too little to understand being thrown around. then, the recession of 2008.
the state of florida shed almost 60,000 jobs in the fall of 2008. jessamine didn't understand this. after all, she was eight, busy concerning herself with why she wasn't permitted to wear a dress to school, why she was being called a boy. she didn't understand why suddenly her father was home all the time, sat on the couch with a bottle or a can, sometimes insulting her and sometimes her mother. the words got harsher. months passed. her mother had to work more. jessie didn't quite know if she wasn't allowed a barbie because of money or because of who they had decided she was, without ever asking her.
then one day, in 2010, her father wasn't there. she never saw him again, apart from his name on the occasional child support check after he got his new job, after his life had apparently become perfect with the simple removal of her and her mother. like they had been holding him back. her mother got tired of coping, sent her child back to live with her grandparents.
in 2012, she received news. her mother was remarrying, some ex trust fund tech dude, whose sole personality was being rich and frankly jessie was fine with that. she had a new house, back with her mother. a new surname, her father's relegated to the middle, forgotten. and on her part, she had news for her mother too. she had finally had the courage to come out to her grandparents. she began to transition in the eighth grade, her father's insults just a bad memory.
still, it wasn't all smooth going from there on out. she never fit in when it came to her new school. she never quite felt like her new rich friends saw her as one of them, only ever an outcast, an intruder in their privileged world. and as much as she'd say she never cared for the popularity contest, jessamine did. she cared deeply what everyone thought of her. and more than anything, she cared that she felt so unworthy. it was an emotion which resonated so strongly with her that even after taking a gap year, her arrival at ogden was marked by, more than anything else, a desire to prove herself as her fellow students equal. and particularly, as it turned out, as greer's equal.

greer: they were friends, you might say. she was always as close to greer as she seemingly could get, and yet jessie never quite managed to be as attached to the girl as she wanted. sure, there she was with her entering the parties and the social events - and yet often it felt as if she were on the outside, not privy to the secret workings of the girl’s mind in the way that she might have liked to be. greer felt, to jessie, tantalisingly out of reach - did she care more about being close to greer for the sake of her, or for the sake of overcompensating for her own inadequacies? the knowledge that greer cared more for others turned out to be just enough to leave jessamine desperate, enough to scrabble in the metaphorical dirt to try and sift for one scrap of gold, one chance to seem, well, more worthy. even if her days hanging back with the other kind of friends had her feeling more and more like a boring conquest of greer’s, no longer amusing or relevant. in fact, if anything, she began to party harder, dig herself deeper into a hole of her own creation, try her best to be more mysterious and chaotic than she had ever been - all in an effort to distinguish herself. to hide her growing resentment of the girl who her jealous streak just would not allow her to ditch. who she maybe wanted to be, but didn't like all that much.
