Before I begin my in depth analysis and research, I wanted to analyse what areas of research I need to touch on to further my development in this project. These are just some of the areas that will MOST LIKELY be looked into or at least mentioned throughout the project.
CREATIVE MINDMAP:
Here we all used sticky notes and magazines and any other artistic material to create a mood board that relates to our chosen topic. Here mine evaluates the idea that desire is pacified through consumerism created by the government. I looked at how we are confined in this zoo like society being told what to do and what to eat just because of the governments influence. and as a result we are one, unified without difference. I am excited to further look into this topic of desire and how it can be easily pacified.
WEEK 6:
Here we looked at context and time and how all concepts are shaped by the location and context surrounding them. For a quick experiment we looked at using any object from our surroundings and creating a piece of art from what materials surround us. Even using rubbish. It must be no larger than about 2-3 inches. This was my interpretation of the room and what I could find within it. This little art piece definitely describe the room.This definitely shaped my understanding of the context and materials surrounding me.
Artist Statement:
"This assignment will explore the notion of desire and its ability to pacify society through investigation the way the government has used democracy since WWII. A question that will be explored is: 'How have Western governments pacified the masses to create passive predictable consumers?'. Essentialy, this project will specifically look into the governments use of desire in manipulating the individual into a emotional consumer through interpretation of artists work such as Surasi Kusolwong, Janine Antoni and Dieter Roth whom have targeted the issue through raising awareness or criticising the government for its expatiation of desire on society keeping them contained. Furthermore, Marx theory will be looked into and dicussed in this task."
Desire for Happiness:
Here we experimented with body art by interpreting the idea that there is a desire for happiness. And that this spiritual desire for happiness if relevant in many religious systems. Many people are pious in their roles trying to find happiness. This is where we looked at a headdress that symbolised religion and the stature of prayer. Then on the head we placed an empty container full of water that is to balanced on the head to symbolise the idea of what is expected from young girls in the 50. How the finishing schools tried to obtain perfect posture. What is perfect happiness and how is this desire achieved.That is what we were questioning.

This particular website was to assist me with some foundational knowledge about the idea of “desire-producing” and about the “desire-machine”. In the question I have chosen it mentions Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy on desire and how it is constructive instead of a concept of lack. I wanted to further develop my understanding of this so i could understand and evaluate the question in more depth. I was really pleased with this website as it allowed me to understand what I was about to complete my assignment on. It was extremely helpful and developed my understanding of the topic at a deeper level.

This was something I accidentally stumbled on in my research but helped me develop my idea of the topic better and allowed me to perceive the work of other designers. The artists name is Julie Gendron and she currently focuses on this idea of desiring productions. This particular work struck me as intriguing as it was a description on desire and how desire incorporates more and more. Even the layout was interesting with the couch and TV. This piece of research inspired me to stretch my thought process outside of the box.

This was another inspiring artist that really got me thinking. It was actually one of the main things that lead me to the whole concept of sweets and chocolate and how that relates to desire. He painted his works from chocolate and that made me think about how incredible that is in regards to peoples desire for chocolate and desire for art. It was like an ironic painting. Two desires in one. This inspired me with my poster and the whole change of direction in my choice of theme.

This was extremely interesting for me. I started researching this because I personally wanted to see what the effects of chocolate were on people. And after this I found that it was actually a result of dopamine being released in the brain. Which was something that would numb that lack of desire in people. I called it temporary satisfaction. But this scientific article gave me the information i needed to fully make the point I was trying to make, plus it was extremely interesting.
FINAL POSTER..
This is my final design. It essentially is an entire poster made out of edible elements. However, like described before in my analysis of materials.. each element is important. Each has its own meaning and significance.
In regards to the entire picture, it basically reflects the way chocolate subconsciously creates a desire in us to numb every other aspect of life including the larger desires we lack. It is a comforter and consolidates us in the moments of lack.
This is why the poster screams "eat me". Because it is basically just telling us to eat it. When we see chocolate that is the first words that will reach our brain. We think nothing else then to eat it. Whether we realise it or not there is a desire in us to eat it. So in this poster I am making this subconscious desire become a reality and illustrate how chocolate in all its glory allows us to escape from the moments of frustration and hide away in temporary moment of satisfaction. However, just like the poster will eventually fade due to its temporary components, so will the satisfaction of the desire numbing idea. Because with desire comes more desire. The desire to consolidate ourselves from our previous desires. It is an ever revolving cycle of desire. And in the end it will fade, just like the temporary satisfaction of chocolate.
CONSTRUCTIVE PROCESS OF MY POSTER...
MATERIALS FOR POSTER:
Here are all the materials I am using for my poster. Each one with a significance to the whole picture.
WHITE CHOCOLATE: White chocolate is the chocolate with the most sugar in it. It looks pure but results in a lot more fat and energy loss after consumption. It is a very deceiving food for your body. Tastes amazing but is worse for your body. Just like the desire machine, there is only so much chocolate one can consume to temporally numb the need for a greater desire harder to obtain..
FROSTING: Frosting is one of the most common comforting foods around many of the main chocolate filled countries. People put it on cakes, cupcakes and sometimes eat it plain just because of how good it taste and is very easy to eat quickly.
CARDPAPER: I wanted to use card paper as I wanted to make my design on a paper/cardboard because I wanted to advertise chocolate in a more realistic way to show how accessible it is. It can look like a normal poster but when you touch, smell or taste it... it is more the normal. It is real. It is accessible. I want it to be a poster that has become more than just a poster.
SILVER SPRINKLES: These Silver decorative sugar balls are a representative of aesthetic in my artwork. it is more to make the poster look more enticing and edible. It makes it look like the top of the cake.
The posters message is mainly this: That the world can easily give us access to things such as chocolate that will easily gratify our growing hunger for 'MORE'. It will sit in front of our faces and scream "Eat me" in such a consuming world. But the rich goodness of chocolate is glorified in the moment of our lack. Because without us knowing, we desire the chocolate to comfort our lack of desire. We trying to numb desire with desire. It is this continual spiral. However, temporary numbing will not work, cause eventually it will fade away... Just like my poster. If you leave my poster out for a while it will eventually melt and fade away..
THE CONSTRUCTION OF MY CHOCOLATE POSTER...
CHOCOLATE NUMBS OUR DESIRE Or DOES IT?
After much thought about my research and what I have come up with, the concept of my poster has formed.
Chocolate is a comforter or pacifier for adult in days like these. And in fact, Australia's love for chocolate is actually one of the worlds most highest, considering our small size. However, in regards to desire it instantly gratifies us when in need. We desire it and it can easily be given within a short amount of time. Due to price and availability. In life one can comfort themselves with sweet treats to make up for the larger desires that are unable to be achieved in that moment. For example, I may want a new car, but realising I am low in funds and accessibility I go buy myself some chocolate to comfort myself about my lack and misfortune.
However, the desire-producing machine holds a belief that desire allows room for constructive creativity and production. This idea states that ‘desire is not an imaginary force based on lack, but a real, productive force.’ Nevertheless, even this positive perspective on desire does not hide the fact that the sense of lack is still there, hovering over us, creating a pained emotion in our inability to obtain the things we want. In some cases this drives people forward into what they want. But in many cases it can plunge people into a state of depression or frustration. It has been said that "desire is the root cause of all evil". But that is not entirely true. It is very much about uncontrolled desire which leads to lack.
For a person with little self-control and a need for a quick comfort, chocolate is the perfect anti-dote. It is easy to obtain, releases a feel good emotion and taste amazing - feeding your hunger. This desire-producing machine is a positive perspective but for many it is actually a false standard set by the machine. And if people are unable to reach that standard again, they need a feel good thing to consolidate them in their lack.
This is why I want to look at chocolate in its glory and how it actually becomes a temporary satisfactory hit for a person when in this lacking state. It settles the impossibly frustrating desires by comforting the individual. But whether that individual knows it or not, the desire for comfort in itself creates a desire that leads to the desire for chocolate. It is this desire-machine working even in the mists of its failure. People continue to produce desires that will replace or settle their other desires. And therefore the desire-producing keeps producing... but it is more hidden in this aspect.
EFFECTS OF CHOCOLATE ON YOUR BRAIN - releasing dopamine.
DESIRE THROUGH CHOCOLATE:
When eating chocolate our 4 of our vital senses are activated... sight, smell, taste, touch. These enable us to experience the food in a much more acute and way. From just one taste it creates a desire in us.
When we eat chocolate DOPAMINE is a chemical released in our brain which is released when you enjoy something. This is the same with other things in life like laughing or watching your favourite TV show. As a result we enjoy the feeling when eating/drinking chocolate and it builds this familiar need in us to always want to obtain it. From this chocolate cravings can occur which is actually a physical desire in us to want more of what we don't have.
Chocolate is a much more faster and obtainable desire than many other things in life.. i.e: material possessions. It is a temporary but fast way to rest our desires. It is a way to indulge and make us feel better when we cannot obtain things in life that we desire. Chocolate does not let us down like other things in life and is easily obtainable. It can comfort us when we are down about life. It is like an anti-depressant for our desires. I want to play with this idea... About the satisfaction of chocolate in our lives that gives us a quick satisfaction and comfort to our desires and lives.

Here are some advertisements that I perceived as chocolate being presented as a desire. Each one focuses on the lips when involving a person, which I find interesting because lips can be perceived as lustful and desirable. Like kissing. Which relates to the magnum kisses ad. They used the imagery of kisses to portray the chocolate sweet treat...
I wanted to look at artists that worked with chocolate....
I did some research and found 'SID CHIDIAC' who works with chocolate and paints with chocolate. It creates a beautiful chocolaty desire in art. This Elvis Presley painting was painted with Belgium chocolate..
This amazing artists has inspired me to look at maybe using my poster as a chocolate canvas to convey the fast and quick satisfaction that comes with chocolate. This was a really good inspiration for me.
After brainstorming some more, I thought about the desire in chocolate and sweet treats. This lead me on a path that resulted in me finding new ideas about how chocolate is a quick and temporary thing that satisfies our cravings. Chocolate is a big thing that is connected to desire but is easily obtained but quickly consumed. I'm going to look at the desire in chocolate.
