Growing up in Namibia they always told us that the reason it's this way is - wait for it - colonial nonsense! That long finger is called the Caprivi and it was basically cut off of the side of Nam (on the Botswana border) and added onto the North East, giving that cute nose-like profile. Feel free to fact-check me but I was always told this was to allow the Brits to build a railway connecting all their colonised countries, which obviously never happened because jeez, what a nightmare.

The Caprivi is a ridiculously beautiful place, though, and while Namibia is like 80% desert the Caprivi is a lot more green and lush, so it's a valuable and interesting addition to the country. Just maybe a bit random for all the tribal groups who live there.
