You know, he had signed up for this thing just to be social, but looking at the list provided he got the feeling it wasn’t going to be such a simple task. Tucking his phone away he made his way to the other bedroom, knocking on the door with a small frown.

It’s not like there was some kind of penalty not to do it, but he would talk to Akira about it first and decide what their first course of action should be. “Kurusu-kun, you’ve gotten the list as well, correct? Can I come in an we can go over our options?”

This list, peppered with kaomojis, was almost blinding to look at. Did the ex-leader of a mafia family really type like this? ...Why?

More importantly, it seemed the school had actually provided some relatively challenging tasks. Was this worth it? It could be an interesting way to learn about the school and its staff. When Akechi knocked on the door, he opened it, nodding towards the inside.

“I got it. Come in. We’ll decide what to do.”

Don’t worry he finds it just as amusing. You made an attempt and that can be said about very few people in his life. “I honestly wouldn’t have a clue, I’ve never had housemates before.” At least not ones that weren’t other foster kids and he’s not to sure that counts. “This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve spent my birthday alone though. I usually just buy myself a treat and watch some Phoenix Rangers, it’s hard to have a party when you’re so busy” he speaks softly, picking at his slice for a moment before taking a bite.

It wasn’t anything special, in fact it was a little dry and probably wasn’t the best cake he’s ever had, but it fills him with a strange warmth… Weird. “I’m not picky, you could have gotten any kind.”

He pauses, looking a little bashful as he speaks next. “This… Might seems like a bit of an odd question, but if you have the time would you like to watch some Phoenix Rangers with me? I’m going to go watch it either way, but I figure I should at least offer”

“I guess it’s pretty tough to be a detective.” That was kind of sad. In the end, spending his birthday here wouldn’t have been much different from spending it at home, would it? It made Akira glad he took the time to stop by the store and pick up that cake. It wasn’t much, but surely cake and one person for company was better than no one.

“Phoenix Rangers?” Oh, right, that was that show Futaba really enjoyed, the sentai-style one. Well, Akechi did say he liked Sunday morning cartoons, so it shouldn’t be too surprising. “Sure. I’ve never seen it before, so it should be interesting.”

“I see…” he mused, looking at the knife with a cautious look. Honestly, out of all people he suspected Akira would be the last to try and poison him, and he was doing this for good reasons. Sighing softly he gave a smile, grabbing the knife to cut into the cake.

“It looks nothing like me, but I appreciate the attempt, Kurusu-kun. Honestly… I’m a little surprised you even went out of your way to do this.” putting the slice on the plate, going over to grab another and cut a slice for Akira as well.

“Thank you, it really does mean a lot” his words were soft, careful. He still wasn’t to sure what to make of all this, but he had to admit, it was nice to have someone to eat a little bit of cake with. “I actually bought myself a cupcake, perhaps I should share to say thank you”

“You don’t think it looks like you? I thought I really nailed your hair.” No, he didn’t. It looked absolutely awful. He was no artist, and he knew it, but it was pretty amusing to gift Akechi a cake with a terrible drawing of himself on it.

“We’re housemates now. It’s not much, but this much is normal, right?” Akira guessed it was normal anyway. It wasn’t like he lived in a dormitory-like environment before now. “Besides, you don’t know anyone here, do you? It sucks to be the only one celebrating your birthday.”

“Thanks.” Grabbing two glasses, he poured each of them a cup of milk before taking a seat. “I didn’t know what flavor you’d want for the cake, so I hope you like it.”

It was an off handed comment. He hadn’t expected Akira to take it to heart at all. After all, no one cares, Akira had no reason to care really. They weren’t friends, they barely knew each other at all. Although for some reason, that didn’t sound right.

Sighing softly as he unlocked the door he adjusted the bag in his arms, he had gone out to get himself a little treat, really it’s the least he could do for himself. It was just a simple chocolate cupcake, as well as a few groceries.

When he got into the kitchen though he paused, glancing around. This was… Weird. “Kurusu-kun?” he called out, eyeing the cake suspiciously. It had to be from him, right? He was the only one he even mentioned it to today. He decided to put away his other things first, before going over to the counter to check it out.

That drawing was horrible, but it was cute all the same. “Is this from you…?”

After leaving the cake on the counter, Akira had returned to his room for a while. There was a book he had picked up from the library, and he was ready to see if he could learn a few things from it. He kept reading as he heard the front door open and close, finally putting a marker in his book when he heard his name called.

“Something wrong?” He asked as he stepped back into the kitchen. Akechi seemed perplexed. It was reasonable. After all, they weren’t close, but this was a special occasion, wasn’t it? There wasn’t a lot of options as to how to celebrate in a place like this, and it was bad enough without having your birthday ruined. “I picked it up from the store earlier. Looks just like you, right? I’m an artist.”

Grabbing a plate from the cabinet and a kitchen knife from the drawer, he pushed the two over to Akechi.

“The birthday boy has to cut the cake and get the first slice. It’s tradition.”

When someone with a constant, pleasant smile on his face suddenly begins to mope around the house, well, something isn’t right. Akira had asked in passing what was wrong and learned that today was Akechi’s birthday, and he was spending it in this miserable place. Arriving here was an awful birthday present.

Akira waited until the detective left for other things before dropping by a store to purchase a cake. When Akechi returned to the house, he would find it on the counter with a poorly drawn depiction of his own face done on it with gel and a note that says “Happy birthday.”

Fantastic… If all of this was true he really had been hoping for to much. Licking his lips he leaned back in his chair, silent as he thought it over. Of course he never expected this to be a walk in the park, but it threw a nice big wrench into everything.

He supposed for now his main objective would be to just gather data and keep himself safe, it’s all he could do.

“Hm… In a place like this, it’s not going to be enough. I would suggest paying close attention to those practical classes, at the very least knowing how to handle a knife would be a major asset” Goro pondered into his cup, setting the newly finished coffee down “As for my skills, while I wasn’t legally allowed to carry around a gun, I would often practice at the shooting range. So I do know my way around a hand gun at least. I’d like to think I’m a pretty good shot. You know I do believe there’s a shooting range, perhaps I could teach you.”

For something of this magnitude to operate, it had to be deeply rooted in the dirty underbelly of society. Simply revealing it would no doubt be useless as well. The school was enormous and had an entire city around it dedicated to its use. It was doubtful that authorities simply didn’t know about its existence-- They were allowing it to exist.

“You’re right. I’ll have to learn fast since we’re here.”

Truthfully, Akira was already skilled with knives and guns, but that wasn’t something he could easily tell the detective. How long could he hide his skills in this place? Probably not for long, especially if the two of them both have classes together. Pretending to be useless in a fight could get him killed if he wasn’t careful.

“Hm? Would you? I would appreciate that, but I don’t have anything to teach you in return.”

Oh, of course. It honestly was a very relaxing place to go and Boss made amazing coffee. He was going to miss it. It was one of the few things he actually enjoyed.

Giving a worried frown his hand moved up to cover his mouth “Of course, but it’s still a school, with underage students. You’d think they’d at least have the decency to protect them. I guess I’m asking for to much from such a place as this.”

“The kind of injuries that could be sustained… This doctor better be on the super natural levels of talent if they don’t want dead bodies, then again, there may be a survival of the fittest mentality so even that could not even matter. I just hope this school has some kind of morals.” he paused, before looking at Akira with a steady gaze “By the way, do you even have any fighting experience?”

Akira would miss it too. Being in this place vividly brought to mind how much LeBlanc had become home.

“Apparently, the principal of this place and a bunch of the staff used to be in the mafia. They’re probably trying to groom future employees that can withstand this place. You’re not an asset if you’re not strong. It’s about benefits, not morals.”

“Hm...” What he had heard was that the doctor uses magic, but who knows if that was true? It certainly wasn’t impossible, and it would explain a few things, but it wasn’t worth mentioning until he found out for certain. “I used to roughhouse with my friends when I was a kid, if that counts.” He responded, meeting Akechi’s gaze as he brought his mug back to his lips. “What about you?”

“I don’t know. His scent probably could. You’ve never seen him leave a gym.”

‘Bro, girls fly at me when I be at the gym. The heck you talkin’ about?’

“Hm?” Turning to face the source of the voice, Akira noticed his schedule printout in the stranger’s hand. Did it fall out of his back pocket? “Ah, thanks. I need that.”

If they got a roommate like that he even doubts there’s anything they’d be able to do about it. He’d like it if the living room didn’t become a crime scene thanks.

Shaking his head he moved to sit down across from him, giving a sigh “Of course not. I am much to busy to be wasting my days away in a little cafe. I’m sure he was joking but it’s not vital information I really need” in fact he had asked purely for conversation, it was all the same to him in the end.

“…. Considering there are practical classes on things like torture, I would hope that other students aren’t being used to practice on” Goro cringed a little, just the thought left him disturbed… Although not disgusted strangely. “How in the world would they not get hurt?”

“Phew.” He responded with a fake sigh of relief. Of course it had only been a joke before. Akira sincerely doubted there was any concern. Even if Akechi knew exactly how to prepare coffee like LeBlanc’s, Akira would still fully expect to see him at that counter every now and then.

“I doubt they care if students get hurt. You know what kind of place we’re in, right?” He frowned a bit, lifting his mug to take a sip of coffee. What kind of place was this? Who does this really benefit? “Apparently, there’s some kind of talented doctor on campus. I guess they’re willing to let anything happen to us since she’s here.”

“Please, we’re both aware you have absolutely no problem attracting women” and probably men. “It’s just Sakamoto-kun who couldn’t even attract flies”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Yeah, he does. “I don’t know. His scent probably could. You’ve never seen him leave a gym.”

‘The untouchable delinquent that can’t get a woman’? Who’s going to tell Ryuji that’s only him?

“Good luck in our place, Akechi.”

“That’s commonsense, not a house rule- blood is a pain to clean so I would appreciate it if we can keep it in our bodies in general” he mumbled, hand going to his chin as he made his way into the kitchen, pulling down a couple of mugs and checking to see if the machine was done.

Pulling down the sugar he fills the mugs, grabbing a spoon and putting a bit of the sweet stuff in his own, giving it a slow stir.

“Why, I’m flattered. You know I asked boss how he makes his coffee and he told me it’s a trade secret, are you sure you should be showing me such things?” Goro joked lightly, setting the spoon down on the edge of the sink before sipping at his cup. “I wonder how the classes here are going to be handled… I would hope they would use dummies for training”

“I’ll try my best.” Somehow, he got the impression not everyone in this school would be putting in that much effort, however. Their mysterious third housemate could drag dead animals though the house for all they know. Who knows? It’s hard to wak across this campus without seeing crazy things.

“The coffee should be the best it can be, right? Why? Planning to open LeNoir and challenge us?” Taking a coffee mug from a cabinet, he carefully poured himself a cup and took a seat with it. “I asked some upperclassmen on the way here. They don’t use dummies. They use students. There’s not really any concern about anyone getting hurt.”

Well of course he’s suspicious, but Akira is also the closest thing he has to an ally in this place. His options are to either go it alone, or at least TRY to have someone on his side, and honestly, in a place like this, being alone is not the better option.

“Bed time was pretty strict growing up, so I didn’t get to many chances to try and stretch those limits” he mused, thinking about it before shaking his head. Even his own room wasn’t much better, bare and not much to look at, but that was fine, it just needed to be a place to sleep. “Most likely. I just hope they’ll be civil” he sighed, quietly hoping their other room mates would also be human.

“Anyway, I made coffee, would you like a cup?” he offered, slowly realizing that his new roommate knows how to cook. Wonderful, this was working out perfectly “It’ll be nothing like Leblanc’s for sure, but I suppose it’s something”

Akechi would have to forgive Akira for still being very cautious of him. If he did manage to reach his goal, shutting this place down and returning to his previous life, the hunt for the phantom thieves would surely continue-- and in this place, anything Akira used to protect himself and others could be used as evidence against him.

“Huh.” That sounded about right. He had the image of a young Akechi that followed rules pretty closely. Well, who knows? “Maybe. We could set up house rules. ‘No bloodshed in shared rooms’.” He joked as he dropped off his things in the room he had chosen. Wouldn’t that be just the icing on the cake? Housed with both Akechi and someone violent.

“Sure. Thanks.” Akira responded with a nod, heading back towards the kitchen. “Maybe I’ll show you how to make it like we do. Who knows how long we’ll be here?”

That snapped her back to reality real fast. Stumbling back a little, she regains her footing, and a calmer expression as well. “Ah- yeah. Guess we both were occupied.” Regaining her composure, she’ll continue a bit. “Uhm, I’m Yuko Seiun, a new student here. And you are?”

“I’m glad you’re okay.” Was she? She had looked pretty startled before, but she kept her footing. “Akira Kurusu. It’s nice to meet you, Seiun-san.” His gaze trailed to her hands, the source of her distraction. “Good book? It’s dangerous to walk while reading.”

He swears he’s not going to be stupidly public about it. However there is a way to go about these kinds of things, even without his powers. He’ll be keeping that to himself for now though, if he talks about it to much that leaves to many chances for someone who doesn’t need to hear, hearing.

“Yes, room at the end of the hall, to the left” he gestured for him to follow, showing him the kitchen and other things before standing near the rest of the empty rooms so he could pick “The kind of child to stay up late at night and watch things he’s not supposed to. To be honest, I was a Sunday morning cartoon person myself”

It’s for the best that Akechi keeps secrets like that to himself. Honestly, Akira was a bit surprised he had the honor of hearing something like that. It was his impression that the detective was interested in him due to suspicion, but what could this mean? There was a number of possibilities.

“I didn’t watch a lot of TV, but yeah, sometimes. A lot of kids did that.” He took a look into the rooms. They were about the same and even the view didn’t offer anything particularly unique, so he shrugged, pointing to one. “Guess I’ll take this one. I wonder if we’ll get another roommate.”
