I also wanted to mention that the transition from in-person classes to digital classes wasnt easy and I was often side-tracked by a lot of different things over the remainder of the semester. But, I feel that the way this class turned out after the fact was done really well. And though I lost out on some interactions with everyone, and on doing some of the assignments because I lacked motivation or materials, I enjoyed seeing everyone's work both in and out of class. I hope everyone has a great summer and we can get back to some semblance of a society some time soon.

Some last minute posts

I wanted to say thank you Anna for this semester. I was always a bit slow to get my work started and finished but I learned a lot about the processes of painting and really enjoyed the class and wish I could've done more in class and with the assignments throughout the semester. I'll be sure to remember what I've learned in this class the next time I get a chance to paint.

I got bored last week and decided that with my leftover acrylic paint and abundance of brushes I would try painting something fun and abstract

This is a bit of a late post for the collage. I made it as abstract as I could and ended up doing this by using some acrylic paint + matte medium on some Bristol paper and cutting it with an x-acto knife.

I've also been working on a final assignment for another class lately that I think is going pretty well (even if I'm behind on it by a few classes)

My time has mostly been taken up doing work to living somewhat peacefully in a virtual world. It's a nice little escape when I need a break

Really good work Jason! Its a bit hard to fully tell because your painting is sideways, but I like the attempt a lot. I also like the subtle details in the droplet

Discussion Questions 2

1. What are some ways in which we might find an image? What are the limitations of these ways? >We can find images both through the internet or, on occasion, in person. The limitations of finding something online is that it can be distorted or brought down to a lower quality as well as not giving the full experience of the image itself.  

2. How is ‘Google image search’ limiting? (Is my google search the same as yours? Why why not?) >Google image search is limiting because it shows results based on relevance but not necessarily what you’re looking for most of the time. It takes into account certain key words but some of them may be ignored by this relevance unless you put quotations around the word. It could be that two people could search for the same thing but with different wordings and doing so can bring up different results.

3. How might we search deeper for images that are less repeated, rare, unique, lost….? >Typically when I want to search deeper for images I get more specific with the wording. For example, I could search up “puppy” and find millions of images of puppies but a small portion of them could be what I actually want. If I instead search up “husky puppy” or “shiba inu puppy” I’m much more likely to get images of the exact breed of puppies I want to see.

Discussion Questions 1

1. How are images transmitted to us (how do pictures find us)? How might they affect us? >Pictures find us in various ways throughout our daily lives. Even when we’re simply staying indoors, we are exposed to images via advertisements on phones or TV. The image itself affects us in different ways depending on what is shown to us. For example if it’s an image of food or advertisement for a restaurant it could make whoever sees it hungry or want to go to said restaurant.

2. Are they an accurate representation of our society? (Steyerls’ article is an interesting discussion of this) >I believe some pictures that find their way into our field of view are accurate in how they represent our society, but most of the time its fairly inaccurate. Whether it has to do with who the image targets vs. who it is actually seen by, or if it has to do with who or what is represented, there can be a lot of different ways an image can give off an inaccurate representation

3. Consider the qualities of certain image types - describe 1 or 2 of them. A personal photograph, an instagram, an accidental iphone photo, a photocopy, a subway billboard, an image in an ad in a magazine, an image accompanying an article in the newspaper all have different qualities. Different technologies, agendas, and materials. They affect us differently. Can you describe one or 2 in detail? >Instagram photos, though I rarely use Instagram, seem to have a more idealized quality in both how the person is represented and how it is posted. From what I have seen and read about, a lot of time goes into editing and composing the image before posting. Doing this can be both positive and negative for the person posting as well as the person viewing.

You did a good job adapting everything digitally and it looks really clean. The composition is really neat and it took me around the entire piece with how bold some colors are

I love how chaotic is looks but it's equally pleasing to the eyes. The colors you used are also really interesting combinations that work really well together, great work!
