everyone always asks âwhatâs your book about?â but they never ask âhowâs your mental health after rewriting the same chapter 12 times?â
Anyone else ever wanna write fanfic of your own stories that donât even have a first draft done or am I the only one with that particular strand of brain worms
Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:
Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.
Youâre supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.
When rich/important people forget your name and theyâre drunk, they usually just tell you that they donât remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they donât look silly.
A good way to indicate you donât want to shake someoneâs hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if youâre a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely canât shift the glass to another hand and then shake)
Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally donât press lips to cheeks, itâs more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a womanâs makeup)
The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of menâs clothing.
Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. Theyâre meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.
Members of the press generally arenât allowed to freely circulate at nicer galas/events without a very good reason. When they do, they need to identify themselves before talking with someone.
Ways to solve the Why Canât They Use Magic To Fix Everything problem:
â˘Magic has a cost. The more powerful the spell, the more it drains the casterâs life.

â˘Magic is tied to the stars and planets. Its full potential can only manifest on certain astrological events.(And these are once-in-a-millennia type events)

â˘All magic users are descendants of a (god/spirit). As the years have gone by, the blood has become more diluted, and magic has grown weaker as a result.
â˘Spell casters can only cast (finite number of spells). They end up using their gift on trivial matters.
â˘âAfter the war, we realized the dangers that magic presented. And so we sealed it away, lest it destroy the world.â
â˘Everyone has magic. Trying to solve one problem is futile as it can be easily undone(often violently and with much destruction)
â˘inverse of the above: everyone has magic, but their powers are limited and (mostly) harmless.
â˘Individual, company, or nation has a monopoly on the only substance that can negate magic. As they rule the world, they have installed anti-magic devices everywhere.
â˘Individual, group, company, or nation has a monopoly on magic. To insure their grip on power, all magic users that do not submit to them are killed.
â˘An act of good will spawn one of evil. The use of fire will cause somewhere to grow cold and dark. And to save a life, one must sacrifice another.
â˘The only magic people have access to is Chaos Magic. No one uses it, for obvious reasons.

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:
The protagonist isnât always right
The protagonist isnât always good
The protagonist isnât always written to be relatable or likeable
The narrator isnât always right
The narrator isnât always good
The narrator isnât always telling the truth
The narrator isnât always the author
The protagonistâs moral compass, the narratorâs moral compass and the authorâs moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they arenât, you should read better books
the current dilemma
sometimes writing is getting up on time, grabbing a nice cup of tea or coffee, and sitting down at your computer to work at a steady pace for a few hours
and sometimes writing is crawling to your computer in the dead of night after you just got home from the longest day of your life, writing a jumbled few sentences through bleary eyes before midnight just so you can say that you wrote that day
Started NaNo by basically writing enemies to lovers drabbles instead of actual plot. It was daunting, but itâs words, right? And Iâve already met my goal for the day. So just get something on the page, even if it isnât significant yet â¤ď¸
