Good News and Bad News

Good news: I have found a steady job at a shoe store nearby and have been making steady progress earning a following on Patreon. Things have been hard but are starting to get easier.

Bad news: It's part time, min wage work, and I still have to survive until my first couple paychecks come in, and my rent wont go back down till next month. I wouldn't've made it this far without the help people have given and I'm extremely thankful. I'm still not out of the woods yet and while progress is being made, I still think I'm going to need help to make sure I can get my footing. Adblock DNS is easy to install! Works for all phones! It works on most ads, but not video or tumblr.

Settings → Network → Private DNS, paste in dns.adguard.com

the above will decrease the amount of ads you see system-wide. however: hands down the BEST ANDROID ADBLOCKING feature is the ability to install Firefox with uBlock Origin enabled.

Install Firefox -> Settings -> Extensions -> uBlock Origin

this only blocks browser ads, but HOLY SHIT does that matter if you try browsing websites over apps when possible. which you should bc it's awesome and gives you SO much more control. E.g. blocks youtube.com ads and you can play videos in the background. I have never consensually opened the youtube app in my life

Pro tip: toggle on 'Desktop site' to avoid mobile sites that are purposely designed with fewer features (to bully you into using the app).

Note: for iOS users this isn't possible bc Apple hates your guts, but there are other browser options with built-in adblocking.

For my apple folks here's what's worked for me:

You gotta use safari (i know i know but apple keeps their shit Locked Down and at least it's not a Chromium browser)

Make sure you have extensions enabled

Download 1Blocker from the app store, as of right now it's the one with the RGB cube logo

1Blocker will try to get you to use so many bits of it. You do not care about the bits that are not ad blocking. You will open 1Blocker and you will hit the Ads toggle and then you will move 1Blocker to a folder or hide the app and you will not have to think about it again

Open Settings. Scroll to Apps. Find Safari. Scroll to Extensions (under general). Allow 1Blocker - Ads.

Open Safari. The search bar is at the bottom (weird if you're coming from another browser) and you want to tap the little puzzle piece in the bottom left

Make sure you've got your extensions enabled and 1Blocker Ads is toggled on

Be free!!!!! I have not seen an ad in at least a year. Also the safari reader view is pretty great for getting rid of whatever does manage to slip through.

i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you can’t do that if your healthcare is tied to your job

2-YEAR CHEDDAR

I usually try to review cheeses virginally - that is, ones that I’ve never had before. In this case, this is a cheddar I’ve had many times before. But I couldn’t leave it off the blog, what with its obvious appeal to leather and rubber fetishists.

As far as cheddars go, Grafton’s 2-year aged isn’t going to shock you. It’s mild, light on the salt, with a slightly sweet and grassy flavour. It’s got a nice texture. It’s dense, more moist than I expected, and smooth.

So what is the deal with the gummi suit on this cheese anyway? Well, cheese has obviously been around a lot longer than fridges. Fresh cheeses like mozzarella are too moist to last very long outside of a cold place (bacteria and fungi do so love damp places), though I don’t think anyone was too mad about eating that stuff quickly. But cheeses that have been aged (and dried) more have some more preservation options, which is where cheese wax comes in. The wax is a physical barrier, stopping fungal spores from landing, and also blocks moisture and air, making the cheese a pretty unfriendly place to grow. Even drier cheeses can be bandaged in cheesecloth and then slathered in lard to preserve them while allowing some ventilation.

I gotta admit: hot wax isn’t really my thing. But cheesecloth bondage and grease… it has potential.
