It is usually an accumulation of small things that make big changes. I have not done pistol squats in a long time and when I did, I was unable to squat down on my left leg without keeping my right leg on the floor. I thought this was due to a meniscus tear in my left knee. However, I started to do Romanian split squats about 3-4 weeks ago and believe that has made a world of difference! I kept my rear leg on a support that is lower than a standard gym bench since my hip/knees flexibility is more limited in my left side. I also used a step for the front leg so I can get deeper into the lunge position without hitting the ground with my knee. I am using relatively light weights now to work on form and emphasize range of motion. This afternoon I was able to do sets of 12 on both sides with my opposite leg elevated. I can still tell my left side feels more unstable and weaker than my right so I still have room for improvement. I did see some minor improvements in range of motion and running but did not think this would translate over to pistol squats this well! #pistol squats #correctiveexercise #track #muscleimbalance #functionaltraining

Aim to work up to lifting your bodyweight for reps. This also hits the back in a different plane than doing pull ups or chin ups. A great way to get better at pull ups without doing pull ups is doing bent over rows. If you are a beginner, start with the barbell or you can use dumbbells. Make sure to tighten your abs and keep your lower back and hips in a neutral position. A good guide is to place a stick or PVC pipe on your back to make sure along your spine. The stick should ideally touch the back of your head, between your shoulder blades, and sacrum/tailbone. They should be space between your lower back and stick but not so much that you could place two hands together. Aim to work up to your bodyweight but if you want to be able to do muscle ups, you will need to get closer to 1.5X bodyweight as well as practice doing pull ups and accessory exercises. Adding in assisted band pull ups or doing negative pull ups is also very helpful. Doing pull ups also helps with bent over rows as this was only the second time I have done rows in a long time. 235 x 3. A good progression from pull ups to a muscle ups is the pullover, since it emphasises the negative or eccentric component of the muscle up. While these aren't easy either It may speed up the learning curve to build up necessary strength to get into dip portion of muscle up. Working on getting my front squats up to par with my back squats. I finally got some weightlifting shoes and they do improve foot stability as well as take pressure of calf muscles since I have been straining my calf muscle on my easy tempo runs. I got #inov8 fastlift 370 BOA's since they have a wider toe box for my wife feet as well as a dial instead of laces for a better custom fit. They seemed to help as I hit a new PR 245 x 1 and this was after doing short sprints at track! #frontsquats #track #sprints
