I suspect the truth is that we are waiting, all of us, against insurmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us.
Khaled Hosseini, And the Mountains Echoed (via quotespile)
I've soon realised that sleeping in a 30 year old station wagon isn't the most comfortable thing. In the spirit of making the most out of a sleepless night, I just drive somewhere very dark, take my inflatable mattress out to lie awake outside and stargaze.
Started the day here in Udawalawe, stopped off at a market to stock up on mangoes, drove up to the mountains in Ella, climbed up to see the Ravana's Cave, went up Ella Rock in the evening and almost had a mini heart attack when the train came right at us. Got back to my car, watched an episode of Blue Planet 2 and fell asleep without even having dinner. Love that feeling of being tired but you feel so good that you are.
Ohhh where do I even start!?? After a three day hiking tour got cancelled, I decided to go explore knuckles a bit more. I spent two nights here and it was the best!! Half the time I was questioning myself why I haven't come this way before, its just so hauntingly beautiful. The picture does not do it any justice!
I've lost more than a little bit of confidence in doing new trails on my own, partly because I've not done them in a while. This being the biggest walk i did after my knee injury, I was quite unsure whether i could handle 20 kms of walking a day. To make matters even worse, on the first attempt to get to the top, i got a bit freaked out after listening to an old man go on about people getting lost, leopards in the bushes and a very sad story about a couple committing suicide at the top. Maybe it was the delays from listening to all the stories or me taking it easy on the climbs I ran out of daylight and decided to turn back. Tried it the next day and it was absolutely perfect, the visibility was amazing, the people i asked for directions were nicer and the trail was so much better. This was about the halfway point of the walk, it was absolutely stunning!
Her name is Delilah and for the past two months we've gone on some amazing little adventures. Driving people around and taking them walking has been quite excellent! Met some very lovely and interesting people, got introduced to all sorts of different music, got to know a few words from all over the world, learned how to fix cars, got a little bit better at surfing, read books, met cute dogs, climbed mountains, discovered a few new trails, ate heaps and didn't get too fat! 😁
