Reminder
You will always regret that piece of cake. That soda. Those chips. You will never, never regret a workout. A fast. Skipping a snack. Being skinny finally.
I would just like to say that actually, it’s quite possible to regret skinny. I have regretted workouts when they left me faint and nauseous and I could barely walk for days afterward, when my joints creaked like I was 76 instead of 16. I have regretted turning down a slice of the cake my little sister made, and I have regretted spending days mid-fast, too empty to smile and too tired to keep my head up in class, and I have regretted making up funny excuses to my friends when they ask why I’m not eating and the feeling I got when they all laughed so hard except one friend who just looked at me like she knew exactly what I was trying to hide. And I have regretted skinny. I have regretted being skinny. I have regretted watching my friends grow up bold and loud and free while I stay cold, and I have regretted seeing them laugh and love and make out in an IHOP parking lot and knowing that I can only find happiness in smaller numbers on my bathroom scale, I will never be happy the way they can be. And I have regretted standing on that scale and seeing my goal weight and feeling my chapped frozen lips curl into a smile because at last I’m getting pretty but at the same time I know that I’ve sold my whole life for this and it wasn’t worth it after all. I have regretted that feeling. I have regretted being skinny finally.
i would also like to say, i have regretted a workout. i have regretted a fast. i have regretted skipping a snack.
i regret the workouts that took priority over exploring places on vacation, over spending time with friends, over my physical health. the ones where i literally broke my body and ended up with stress fractures. there’s no pride in working myself all the way up to weak.
i regret the fasts that reduced my ability to participate in life, the ones that diminished my motivation to be a person.
i regret the skipped snacks because they made social things awkward and convinced me i should probably stop going out altogether. because they’re one slip down the giant slide that is relapse.
most of all, i regret the time and mental energy i’ve lost to this illness. perhaps it wasn’t my choice to begin with, but now i have the chance to defy it.
I’m just gonna jump on this train because this needs to be heard more often.
I, too, regret workouts and skipped snacks and lost pounds. I regret losing the trust of my little sister. I regret triggering the same behaviors I used in a friend who I didn’t know was struggling with them as well. I regret the exercise that took priority over movies I really wanted to watch and nights I wanted to spend relaxing with my family. I regret every moment I spent unable to take in the incredible world in front of me because I was too. damn. hungry to appreciate anything in this amazing life.
OP, I can’t predict what you will regret someday. But please don’t tell me what I’ll regret, because I’ve long since proven the opposite to be true.

• Stay hydrated, my friends! • If you are hungry, grab a snack. • Refill your water glass or bottle if it’s running low. •Get up and use the facilities if you need to. Don’t hold it!
