tbh if I see one more person criticize another person's opinion in the Digital Circus fandom by saying "wOw MeDiA LiTeRaCy rEaLlY iS dEaD" I'm going to lose it

I've been away from fandom for a while, is this happening everywhere or is this term abused like this in this fandom especially? It's the same phrase parroted over and over anytime someone dislikes (or likes) an aspect of it or questions certain decisions made for characters. It makes me feel like a lot of people are learning about the concept for the first time and are like "cool, I understand media better than these people and I want to let them know in a way that makes me sound smart"

but no, we have to invent the most uninspired, surface level take on her story possible and peddle that as the big takeaway of a book series that hardly ever gives you such an on-the-nose “moral”

WHOA BOY do I have a lot of feelings about Susan and how readers perceive her. First of all for some reason people still think she's dead and didn't get to go to Narnia--I don't know how that's still something people mess up.

Susan's character choices in The Last Battle are perfectly in character considering how she is in every other book she's in. She has a problem with caring more about appearance than substance--more about seeming smart than seeing the truth. Her problem isn't growing up, it's rejecting and belittling things she deems "childish" in an attempt to APPEAR more grown up. This is something CS Lewis talks about a lot in his other books...about himself. About wanting to seem intelligent, wanting to seem adult, but dismissing valuable things because of caring more about impression than what is real and important. Susan is the character in Narnia that most reflects the author. I could also talk about how she appears in The Horse and His Boy and why that matters but it's 4 am. Susan is a great character.

Books written in the 50s are not going to live up to Tumblr's standards of feminism and morality, but the books constantly have female lead characters and they're often very capable and clever, the boys (for example Edmund and Eustace) are plenty flawed and in need of change and rescue too. There are many reasons I'm not looking forward to the Netflix thing but I'm very concerned that they're going to play it safe with Susan and remove all the depth from her character. At the end of the series she still has a story ahead of her and I hope they don't take that away. If they even get that far.

in almost every other children's book where the main heroine is swept away to a land of whimsy she's shown having a lovely time; braving dangers occasionally, trying to find her way home, sure, but ultimately delighting in the magic around her. meanwhile alice spends her entire time in wonderland like

look, here’s the thing: alice in wonderland’s enduring fucking charm is that it perfectly captures the vibe of being a very tired and annoyed child who is nonetheless required to play along with adult nonsense.

alice is dragged from place to place without warning, forced to play stupid games with no good prizes, grilled over her schooling and manners and recitation and dress, scolded, judged, insulted to her face, sent away, given gifts she didn’t ask for and doesn’t like, corrected incorrectly, been subject to shifting and arbitrary rules, and then when she gets snappish with all this bullshit everyone acts like a little girl’s temper is the end of the fucking world.

alice in wonderland isn’t a drug trip or a nightmare or a metaphor, that’s just what being ten years old is LIKE. that’s why kids love it so much. even if they can’t quite articulate how, they recognize themselves in it.

Jax Apology Tour #1/?

First of my post-unabstraction comics where they manage to reverse the process, starting with Jax who abstracted last and thus was easiest to restore and now needs to awkwardly try to reintegrate into the circus after burning all his bridges and then dying. Fun!

Started with Gangle because she probably deserves it the most and I also hate drawing her and wanted to get it over with. I think Ragatha will be next, which I also find difficult but more interesting than swirl girl here. Pomni should have been first chronologically but this is what happened idk what to tell you

Thoughts on the relationship between these two and my take under the cut!

I feel like Jax and Gangle's relationship in the show isn't explored enough. Jax is clearly a bully and abusive to her, but it's also implied that they have more to their relationship? Jax knows things about her that the others don't, and they apparently always went on team adventures together. I know Goose said Gangle had a codependent bond with him but I feel like we didn't get to see it. I think some of her lines would make a lot more sense if we saw how that relationship came to be, but there's only 9 episodes, so... ok.

I think that to some extent Jax did believe that he was not "that bad" to Gangle but that he knows deep down that's not true. He seemed genuinely shocked that she came to his defense in episode 8 and I think that a lot of his coping mechanisms were failing at that point and he was having to face how much damage he actually did. I think seeing the mural she made would bring back that feeling and disturb him.

He has in the show questioned Gangle's ability to be happy and I think that he would have some thoughts about the mask gimmick but wouldn't say anything about it. Here he's both putting off an apology that needs to happen and also projecting a bit. He also has a mask that hurt and failed him but it's a lot easier to see that in other people.

I don't want to imply by the end of this that they're friends now and it's all good, but to show an acknowledgement of Jax's desire to change and Gangle's desire to coexist peacefully.

Art-wise, I am relearning everything after years of not drawing. New program, new methods, new everything. I need to work on colors, which I took from a screen grab but I feel are off. The rest might come with practice hopefully and I need to watch some tutorials for procreate. But mainly you learn by doing so I'm just...going for it.
