Taking the midnight train

Keep an eye out for ghost trains. They pull in more often than you think.

If you hear the flute signal once, enter. If you hear it twice, enter at your own risk. If you hear it three times, run. 

The train does not always enjoy carrying human passengers. 

Make sure to never carry peanut butter in your luggage.

Never wear matching socks.

If a man in an oversized brown coat sits next to you and asks you for the time, tell him it is nine o'clock. He will go away. Eventually. 

Do not eat any food offered to you. 

Do not use the bathrooms between 00:06 and 00:26. 

When you hear the railroad crossing bells, spirits are entering the train. They are passengers just like you.

Always keep your ticket in your right pocket.

Someone will want to buy your ticket. Refuse to sell it at all costs. 

If your ticket changes date, do not be alarmed. 

You might hear weird sounds down the aisle. 

Never fall asleep with your head against the window.

Always count the number of passengers in your carriage. If the number changes before a stop, leave immediately. 

Passengers sometimes change faces.

Always get off at your stop. Not doing so allows for the train to claim you. 

Never ask when the next stop is.

Remember rule 17. 

Do not travel alone, it keeps you sane.

Pixies are your friends, fairies are your foes. Do not trust either though.

If you forget your luggage in the train, it is imperative you forget about it.

Never let the train conductor see you with more than two rings on one hand.

Jack is the good driver, Steve is alright, Martin will get you killed.

Do not leave your seat if the train comes to an abrupt stop in the Middle of Nowhere.

When going through tunnels, the sounds might scare you, but only be frightened once you feel their presence.

Silence is okay. Too much silence is not. 

Pay attention to the lights before getting off; if the lights flicker and dim, think twice about leaving. 

Exit through the right door.

Always thank the tracks for not taking you down the wrong path.

Once upon a time I worked in this little burger/coffee/ice cream shop and a lady came in one winter and asked if we had a caramel apple drink and we were like ‘well we have cider’ and she was like ‘no I don’t remember what it’s called but this place made a drink that was chai tea, apple cider, and caramel’ and Breezy offered to try and make something for her but she changed her mind and left so Breezy and I were like ‘alright let’s try this’ because we had chai tea, instant cider mix, a shit ton of caramel, instant hot water from the espresso and too much free time. 

And let me tell you it was delightful. It tastes like watching the leaves changing color and dancing in the wind. It tastes like picking out pumpkins and gourds and fresh apples at the farm up north. It tastes like witches and freedom.

I make it every year now and this year I walked in the house on the morning of October first with all the ingredients and shouted ‘FALL DRINK’ and my roommates were like ‘????’ so I made them Fall Drink and now every time they get home from work they’re like ‘Fall Drink pls?????’

Anyway I remember literally nothing else about that woman but I’m very grateful to her.

Also, I do something like this in the crock pot with the overly sweet Growers Pumpkin Apple Cider, chai spices, cloves, a bit of orange juice, and some super dry Pinot Grigio.

Mix, heat, and serve on a nippy night best spent cuddled under blankets with a book.

My friend, you have essentially backward engineered a wonderful winter drink from the Stuart period.

White sack wine, cider, spices (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger) tea, sugar, and if you want it authentic, a bit of cream or whipped egg. All this is brought together in a low temperature and then stewed for a time. It can also be “pulled”, a process in which one “stirs” the concoction by using a ladle and pouring it repeatedly from high in the air. Makes it foamy and frothy. 

Serve warm.

On a cold night, this is a delightful thing. Believe it or not, we also used to make it with a stout beer instead of wine. For a darker richer flavor.

Actually, I know what was up with that!

When The Lottery (by Shirley Jackson) was first published, tons of people wrote into the newspaper that published it to demand to know what the hell it was meant to be about

I suppose, I hoped, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village to shock the story’s readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives.

So basically the story is written in such a way that the uncritical nature of the townspeople is highlighted, when it comes to their own traditions. Every year the town commits outright violent murder, but because it’s ‘normal’ to them, they don’t think of it in those terms. The reader, who isn’t part of the town’s cultural assumptions, sees the horrific nature of their actions. But the characters in the story don’t.

In essence, it’s a story about normalization (before that phrase was coined). The point is to make you think about what cruelties might be passing uncriticized in your own culture, just because they seem ‘normal’ to you. Maybe your town doesn’t stone someone to death once a year, but there are other ways for communities to kill people, or let them suffer. And some of those are just as needless and just as rooted in unquestioned assumptions about how the world works, or how society needs to operate. The people in The Lottery were hesitant to give up their tradition because they believed it guaranteed them a good harvest. Revealing, in that hesitance, that the possibility of a bad outcome was more frightening to them than an atrocity they’d normalized.
