A useful thing to know about AO3 tags is that they're wrangled by humans. A human being will read your tag, understand what it means*, and then connect that tag in the backend system to other tags that mean the same thing (if there are any)

that's why, for example, the tags

and a million more versions are all searchable and filterable if you just tag one of them. A Tag Wrangler (the job title of a human volunteer who manages AO3 tags) has made sure that AO3 understands that those are all synonyms, so AO3 treats them that way.

When you're tagging your fic, or searching for a fic, or filtering a tag to find or remove works from the list you do not have to use every possible version of a tag. You just need to pick one - unless using more is a stylistic choice you're making, in which case have at it.

*or research what it means - which is why wranglers really appreciate it if you put (OC) behind the name of your original characters so that they don't have to scour every source they can find to see if it's a named background character in canon.

There is also a nesting parent/child system, so if you just exclude from your search the canonical tag 'Homophobia', not only will it exclude all variations of it like 'homohpobia' or 'contains some homophobia', but it will also exclude all subtags such as 'Internalised Homophobia' or 'Homophobic [character]'.

Which means that if you're tagging for eg '[Character]'s Family Is Homophobic', you can just tag that and be done! No need to also tag 'Homophobia', 'Parental Homophobia' and 'Homophobic Family'.

AO3's tagging system is genuinely what libraries dream of.

Since someone asked how to see the meta and subtags, let's look at an example:

This is what we call the tag landing page. You can reach it when you're in the tag by clicking the link at the top of the page, e.g. where it says

1 - 20 of 1,885 Works in Centaurs

the underlined 'Centaurs' is a link to that tag's page.

The first thing you see is the Parent tags. This is, in general, what fandom a tag is stored in. For a tag like Centaurs, which can apply to many different fandoms, that is "No Fandom".

Then we see "Tags with the same meaning". These are synonyms/syns of the tag in question. If you tag your work with "she's a centaur", it will be made a synonym of Centaurs and appear under that tag.

Then there are Metatags. In this case, Mythical Beings & Creatures. A centaur is a type of mythical being, so it's a subtag of that tag.

Then there are Subtags. These are tags that are more specific - mostly specific characters as centaurs, in this case. If you choose to exclude the Centaurs tag from your search, you'll also be excluding Centaur Castiel automatically.

All of these are links - you can use them to navigate up and down the tree, so to speak, for instance if you want to see what other mythical beings and creatures are included under "mythical beings and creatures," you can click on that to go to that tag's landing page.
