she’d have to stop by the room she shared with nola before judith left. she had an extra coat that would definitely fit her, and she hadn’t even worn it yet. someone had brought some extras around recently, and aoife knew it would suit judith’s needs. it’d keep her warm, but was also a tone that wasn’t too bright. just in case she wanted something that would allow her to blend into the woods more easily.
“on the subway in the bronx. sort of just came crashing to a halt out of nowhere.” it was odd how she remembered it. she’d stuck with a group of people formed out of the subway car her family had been in. and when she looked back at it, it was interesting to think about the moments before the sudden halt and the moments after. ‘halt’ was a gentle way to put it, she realized. it was quite nearly a crash, and a few people had actually gotten injured. but what was interesting was that she remembered some people from her original group. a boy named mateo stuck out. he’d been sitting across from her when it happened, chattering on to his sister, ezra. then the stop happened, and everyone went flying. her and mateo ( ‘call me teo, it’s what i’ve gone by since i was a baby’ she remembered him telling her one night as they were huddled around a campfire.) had ended up right on top of one another, aoife’s foot giving him a black eye and his knee giving her one to match. she’d gotten quite close with him. “how about you?”
“ san diego, ” judith imagined being stuck in a tunnel during the ensuing chaos of that night, then she shuddered. she preferred the way her own story unfolded on a crowded college campus than a metal container beneath the ground. there was little in the way of a moral compass in her body, but she always managed to inspire loyalty in others, perhaps it was her own set up, but she stayed with the group she’d escaped with long enough to know they chose to stay with her in return.
“ i was going to school, doing...my own thing, and then suddenly there were undead everywhere. made it here on sheer luck...if you can call it that. ” judith should have died long ago, but somehow she managed-- and for good reason. “ now we’re here. ” all that time had passed on the road, it was hard to remember how life was before. “ so... what now? ”
