Ralph McQuarrie: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Portfolio (1980)
in my head the star wars equivalent of tswift is some human woman named tay’lor spiff or something and her stans are losing their minds over theories that she’s secretly a jedi singing about the horrors of war, even though she’s from a neutral system that hasn’t seen so much as a moral panic in 50 years
the theories get even more egregious during the imperial era, with people straight up thinking she joined the rebellion in secret and is loading her songs with subliminal rebel propaganda. their main piece of evidence for this is if you play a certain song backwards, it sounds like she’s saying “freedom” in shyriiwook. the fans get really defensive if you point out she’s performed at the yearly empire day celebration thrice now and her family historically owned ewok slaves
i regret to inform both you beautiful people that this isn’t going to go how you think it will
spiff fans (also known as “spiffies”) insist that the two decommissioned venator-class destroyers spiff purchased, the bad blood and the reputation, are for diplomatic purposes that benefit the rebellion. jedi’lors have concocted theories that she served on both ships during the clone wars and was respectful of every clone that served there, despite her courtship of a gravball player that thrice advocated against the clone veterans being granted natural citizenship

all goofing aside I don't understand the urge to reimagine Tay'lor Allisoarn Spiff as a secret Jedi fighting for the rebellion when the rebel alliance is literally like overflowing with women fighting the empire. Gara and Ke'Cha and Mileu and Halcey are right there. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't like Taylor but why would you hang all your hopes of taking down the empire on her

Isn't Lady Gara a force sensitive?
🪐chirodactylmanisagatewaydrug Follow
Hence why I put her in the list of famous force using women who are in the rebel alliance?
(okay ignore the fact I've put an image in here but this is ops icon)

#im sure op has this post muted by now but Ur icon is so real op
The icon is because of this post

btw to just clarify for anyone who sees this reblog of this post
op is basically saying something along the lines of "yea ik tay'lor spiff is a jedi but like. why is she y'all's only force using rebel icon when there are all these other force users in the rebellion???"
i might have worded this badly but hopefully i got the main point across

Hi OP here I most CERTAINLY DID NOT SAY TAY'LOR SPIFF IS A JEDI???
(based on this post)
you wouldn't believe who showed up in today's Jango Fett comic issue
(Jango Fett #4 by Ethan Sacks and Luke Ross)

I’ve been thinking about Young Mandalorian Din Djarin a lot. Concept art from the Art of the Mandalorian shows that Children of the Watch younglings still wear gear to cover their face. So when Din tells Omera that no one has seen his face since he was a young boy, he wasn’t kidding.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
I will solve all star wars arguments right now. the only parts of sw that are canon are the good parts
That eliminates like all of Star Wars tho
and that’s how society can finally heal <3
Ahsoka: may the force be with you
Din: ............??....?.?..
*weeks later*
Luke: may the force be with you
Din: amen??????? I still don’t know how to answer it. What does this even mean???!?¿¿??
you ever just think back to the force awakens……. it was so good…… it was so Fun…….. there was so much Potential……………..
all wasted for a mediocre looking boot licking white dude
it’s been said many times and many ways but genuinely how do you get such a delightful cast of characters that all have such chemistry together and are such a delight, all of whom have SUCH potential for good character arcs & development, and just go eh who cares split em up focus on the greasy fascist with daddy issues
anakin, a traumatised child with obvious mental health issues that no one’s adressing or trying to help him with: shows signs of maybe not being in the best place mentally
the jedi:
ID: A screenshot of a Try Guys video. Three white men are wearing orange life jackets, and the one in the foreground of the shot is crying. In the background, one man holds a small red glowstick. The caption reads: “Zach: Would a glow stick make you feel better??” End ID.
padme: he told me that… that you’ve gone to the dark side. that you… killed younglings….
anakin:
Currently watching The Empire Strikes Back with my 10 year old sister and she just referred to Yoda as “old Grogu”
Which is definitely some kind of power move I suppose
Video games peaked in 2006 when in lego star wars the original trilogy, they couldn't have the iconic dialogue of darth vader telling luke skywalker he's his father because lego games didn't have dialogue at the time. So they just had to have vader point to a fuckin photograph of anakin and a pregnant padme
a list of names from star wars and their cultural origin (just so we’re clear that these names aren’t actually funky sci-fi names that Lucas and Co. made up, but names that come from actual irl peoples and cultures and were left mostly uncredited read: stolen)
padmé; from padma, or lotus flower, another name/symbol of the hindu goddess lakshmi
pooja; (padmé’s niece) means ‘prayer’ or ‘an act of worship’, usually associated with hinduism
ahsoka; most likely inspired by the indian emperor ashoka
aayla; a turkish muslim name which means 'a ring of light around the moon’
barriss; turkish in origin, means “peace”
smhi; most likely a form of the name lakshmi, a hindu goddess
shaak ti; from the name 'shakti’, an Indian name which means “energy”
depa; obviously from the words 'deepa’ which means “light/lamp”
yoda; possibly from the punjabi word 'yoddha’, which means “warrior”
jamillia; from 'jamilla/jameela’, a Muslim name which means “beautiful”
tatooine (planet); literally an actual city in tunisia
mustafar (planet); from the arabic word 'mustafa’, meaning “chosen one”. note the symbolism that darth vader made it his home
jedi; from the arabic 'al-jeddi’, meaning “master of the mystic warrior way”
din; although pronounced differently at times, din is a muslim word of arabic origin which means “way/creed/path of life”
lord, so many desi terms, and ppl will never know the origins of these names that made star wars what it was
it makes me sad, if we’re being completely honest
when you take inspiration from the majority, it’s not a wonder as to where it came from. not many people see the name Luke or Leia and have to scratch their head and turn their brain inside out to know the origin. western culture has so heavily dominated everything for centuries - oftentimes forcefully - that these names are passed over as normal and unexciting
the problem comes when you take words and names from minorities, especially when they have deep or religious meanings, and turn it into something to fit your space fantasy. people see them and think ‘how exotic!’, which turns this into yet another form of modern day orientalism that flies under the radar of most. it turns into yet another scenario of eastern religions or cultures being deemed ‘other’ or ‘exotic’
for those of you unfamiliar with the term ‘orientalism’, this is what it means in a nutshell - it’s a way of defining how the west looks at the east, and how eastern cultures become fetishised or appropriated over time, ultimately to be seen as inferior, other, or something exotic and exciting
think: all the fantasies and stereotypes that surround the seductive geisha, the mysterious and sexual sultan’s harem, the exotic belly dancer, the barbaric tribes of the deserts, etc etc
this is also why these thought patterns and forms of appropriation are dangerous:
it becomes even more problematic when you take direct words or inspiration from eastern cultures and religions and leave it uncredited, and therefore, un-normalised and further exoticised
@leo-moon @glimmiks y'all just dropped the most woke and amazing commentary I’ve ever seen and I love you for it
if you guys are going to reblog any version of this post, please let it be this version with my 4am rant on orientalism and these A+ comments
I also want to add that on top of this, there are very VERY few visible South Asians in Star Wars, even though South Asian religions, cultures, and aesthetics have formed the basis for so much in this franchise, a small slice of which is in this post. Bodhi Rook was the first South Asian in a lead role (the only other on screen South Asians in Star Wars are Kitser in TPM and Queen Jamillia in AOTC, both blink-and-you-miss it roles) and his movie came out in 2016. He’s also been consistently removed from marketing material such as posters and toy lines. (The only other South Asian with a major role in Star Wars would be Tiya who voices Sabine in Rebels, and Janina who plays Iden Versio in Battlefront II)
Star Wars has a big problem when it comes to taking aesthetics and beliefs from various cultures but not including the people who come from those cultures.
