Around this time of the year in 1997 my phone rang.
It was Mike D. from the Beastie Boys. He had just spoken to Zack
from Rage Against The Machine who asked him to ask me if we would be up for
getting on their tour in the US.
Wu Tang already agreed to it.
I told him I would have to speak to the rest of ATR first
and that I would call him back very soon.
A few months later we were setting up for soundcheck in stadiums -
many people said it was one of the wildest tours of the 90s.
There was tons of chaos and excitement and our generation
figured out a new way to use culture to communicate political ideas to a wide audience.
It was a time when we had to unplug and rewire phone lines in the hotel rooms to have internet.
It was also a time when nobody was afraid to speak out in public - even the most insane theories
were openly discussed.
The idea of censorship was unthinkable. That so many call for it now still puzzles me.
As if this has ever worked or changed anything for the better.
This is why authoritarians always came for the musicians and artists first because when you experience the energy of powerful music, it helps you to push yourself further, it opens new doors for you… it can change your world.
