Penetrating keratoplasty, also known as a corneal transplant. A diseased or damaged cornea is replaced with graft tissue from a donor. The sutures stay in for around a year. I chose a blue iris to make them more visible.

The procedure was observed and sketched in the operating room. The final sketch was drawn in graphite, the color was added in Photoshop, and the instruments were all modeled in 3D using Cinema4D. Procreate for iPad and Photoshop were used to make the insets.

Today, I created five 3D instruments. These are all used in a penetrating keratoplasty (PK) or corneal transplant. I modeled them to use in an illustration describing the steps of the procedure.

I’m revisiting some 3D modeling from last year to make nicer renders. These were two of the first I ever made. I thought I would enjoy 3D, but I ended up loving it. The assignment was to recreate five surgical instruments; they’re pretty inorganic, so that was a good starting point, and they could be used in later surgical illustrations. I got carried away and made 15, and I’d like to keep building my library and maybe redo some of the older ones.

Surgical illustration! Same operation, different audiences. The first image is a step of the DIEP flap reconstruction for surgical residents; the second is intended to educate the patient. The choice of the same background color is complete coincidence.
