[ophelia]: oh god, do you need help? it sounds like things are bit intense for someone who is sick.
[ophelia]: i can bring some things over, if need be? and help with the living room.
[julianna]: I'd hate to risk you getting sick if she's contagious
[julianna]: but on the other hand, if you wanted to bring some pine-sol and chicken noodle soup, i wouldn't object.
[fitz]: you should be a creative writer or something seriously because you just did that whole show not tell thing pretty damn well
[julianna]: well, I spend enough time around books and reading them that I've picked up a few things, I guess.
[julianna]: maybe i'll try my hand at it, one of these days.
[fitz]: honestly that painted way too accurate of a picture
[julianna]: sorry.
[julianna]: it's been a really rough one and my filter's gone.
[julianna]: Waverly is so sick today
[julianna]: my living room is basically a re-enactment of The Exorcist.
[julianna]: I don't know whether to laugh or cry, but I think I'm doing a little bit of both.
“I’m sure she makes it easy because you’re working hard”
“Possibly. I can’t complain, though.”
“Honestly, I’m just waiting for the teens and…I don’t think I can handle it.”
“Oh, uh, yeah. Well, sort of. I’ve practically raised my little sister since she was in diapers. So i’ve dealt with my fair share of awkward phrases aid aloud that you never once thought you’d have to say. Such as ‘No, Maria, we do not pull down other kids’ pants. We also don’t pull down their parents’ pants.’.”
“Oh, I’m sort of dreading that part. I have a feeling that, if the toddler years are any indication, I’m going to have my hands full with Waverly.”
“That’s awesome of you, looking out for your sister like that. So you know how that goes, then. You know, someone should really write down some of these things in a book, or something.”
“Well you sound like a great Mom”
“Well, for the most part, she makes it really easy. But thank you.”
“Haha sounds like something my mom had to say a lot when I was growing up. Kids are just like drunk adults.”
“That’s a fair description, actually. I can definitely see the similarities.”
“Hey, you made it through the terrible twos, that’s a feat in itself.”
“It’s crazy how fast they grow up, isn’t it?”
“Tell me about it.”
“You seem as if you speak from experience.”
“I’m sure…I’ve never had to actually teach someone something like that…”
“It can be rough, but each little step seems like such a huge accomplishment for her and it’s amazing to see how excited she gets over it. It’s going to be worth it, I’m sure. We just have to survive getting there.”
“I uh–I think I can do that.”
“How old is she?”
“Thank you,” she smiled.
“She just turned three. I say ‘just,’ but it’s been a few months, now. Hard to believe, since it seems like yesterday she was a newborn.”
“I’m fine…how are you? Or I guess I know the answer to that…”
“Considering the whole potty training thing, I’d say we’re both doing pretty well. It has been a doozy, though.”
“We’re going to pretend that you didn’t just hear me tell my daughter to stop putting her hands in her pants and pretend that I just said, ‘Hello! How are you?’ instead, okay?”
“She uh, she sounds really adorable.—–Only if you’re sure.”
“She is. I’m sure, really. You’re going to need to know your way around eventually, right? It’s really embarrassing to ask directions when you’ve lived here for a year, trust me.”
His brows furrowed as he listened to her, paying attention to every word. Garrison had known Julianna ever since he moved back and started working at Yordan, having spent most of his free time at the library when he wasn’t at home or at the office. He had no idea what she’d been through, and he couldn’t imagine how hard it was then, for her. He looked at her now, thinking of how strong she was to have gone through such an ordeal all by herself. She had quite the strength.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he tentatively placed a hand on his shoulder, wanting to comfort her but unsure how to. It was never something he was particularly good at. He never knew the right things to say, which was ironic for someone whose profession was the written word. But still, this was different. And while he’d seen plenty of the world, he’d never been in her position to know what it could be like. And as much as he tried to empathize, there was only so much that he could do. And so he hoped the comforting arm was comforting enough. “I’m sorry I made you go through all that again by asking. Your ex husband, he’s one hell of a prick. I apologize if I’m crossing any lines by saying that, but he is.” A bit of anger bubbled in his chest. He was rarely ever angry over things but this– what that man put Julianna through, and how he left her because he was so selfish– well, it made angry. But weren’t you selfish once, a voice in the back of mind asked.
“If you need any help,” Garrison started, speaking his words gently for he didn’t want her to feel as if he was forcing himself on her life, or lending her a hand out of pity because those weren’t the cases at all. He considered her a friend and he wanted to be a friend as much as he could. “I’m here, alright? You just call me. I’m more than willing to help you out in any way that I can. I can’t– I can’t pretend I know what it is like, and I don’t want you to think I’m doing this because I pity you. I don’t, Julianna. In fact, I’m impressed by how strong you are. But like you said, it’s hard to be on your own sometimes so I’m here. I’ll lend you a hand whenever you need it.” Garrison leaned forward to look at her face and when he saw the tears on her cheeks, his frown deepened. “I’m sorry,” he fished the handkerchief he had tucked in his pocket and carefully, gently wiped the tears on her face. Ever so slowly, he put his arms around her shoulder and pulled her to his embrace. “I’m sorry I made you go through that again.”
Garrison smiled at Waverly, enjoying her presence. She was quite the ball of energy and her giggles brought a smile to his face. “I like yellow, too.” he said as he nodded his head. “And yes, I do like being happy. Hm, speaking of yellow, would you like to have some of that yellow-coloured cotton candy?” he raised his arm to gesture to the cotton candy stand nearby.
It was a defense mechanism. It was a defense mechanism that fired when she flinched ever so slightly when Garrison placed his hand on her shoulder. It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate what he was trying to do in comforting her or that she didn’t trust him. It was just that she’d been through so much and just had that sort of reaction--a brief moment when she had to decide whether or not to run.
“Garrison,” she shook her head, not sure how to word her thoughts, “I think you probably are, but I need you to be serious about this if you’re offering help. We can’t take any more inconsistency, especially her.”
Instead of pushing him away or evading his hug as she normally would’ve done, she brought her arms up and wrapped them around him as she buried her head into his chest. Involuntarily, a sob escaped her and was muffled as he held her. It embarrassed her, falling apart in front of him like this. And here he’d been, talking about how strong she was, when she was really falling apart at the seams. “How can you say I’m strong when I’m standing here sobbing in front of you?” she half-asked, half-laughed through tears as she tried to wipe the most recent additions away.
Waverly gasped as he pointed to the cotton candy stand, her mouth forming as big of an ‘O’ as she could manage. Julianna had walked over after the babysitter had walked off to the fair, and Waverly looked up at her. “Can we get some lellow candy, Mommy? Pleeeeease?”
A grin formed on her face as she looked between the two of them and nodded. “Why not? Caston doesn’t have Founder’s Day fairs all the time, now do they?”
“Oh you don’t–You sound like you have your hands full.”
“Really, I don’t mind. Waverly is usually upset when I pick her up from daycare early, anyway. She has these two friends that leave later than her and she always worries that they won’t have anyone to play with if she’s not there. There’s a different lesson about not being the center of the universe in that, somewhere, but I never get there because it’s really cute that she's so concerned.”
“I get that.”
“Uh, brand new, actually. I swear I’m even getting lost in my apartment.”
“Really? That’s pretty bad. I’m not the resident that’s lived here the longest by any means, but I’ve been here a couple of years. I could show you around, if you’d like.”
