From style to genre i guess. i decided i have way too many sketches i haven't even posted anywhere so now i want to post them here.

Font comparisons: something I do as a sort of "file warmup" in my free time... Next time I want to make more style studies, it'll be fonts that are easier to work with for me :) Wanted to put my Jake drawing from 2016 up as comparison since I want to run with all free font files + with types that have more glyphs than the english alphabet. I don't know what I'll do with these "Style Exchange" files yet, but I will probably continue doing a few more. I will try to put some of the other ones up too.

Featuring: some of the original fonts considered for TLATOJL (like "Doggie Bag Script" and some of the "Simian Display" fonts.)

sorry to both all june and all jake fans: this is just a test and I don't have time to make smth new that would only feature juniper or some other character - so old art it is - incidentally it's about 10 years since I started this style study exchange! Maybe I'll have time time to finish a few more after putting up some others :)

ah, the comfort of fanart...

been really busy with life and more stuff, but i keep wondering and wandering back to old fanart I've made and... missing the times I can't go back to.

I really want to continue making stuff and fanart but I know I have to also focus on a much more grounded line for a while and "re-find" what makes me, me, my art my own. That includes fanart too but I need to make original stuff for a while to see what else happens and what else I can make besides what I've made of fanart (very fun stuff, but hard to show on portfolios here). Fanart is useful in portfolios imo bc it shows you can re-interpret existing IP into something else. But I want to re-focus back onto animation and for that I want to make something more original and go back to the root of roots for myself. But for that I need to re-explore stuff I like making and figure out what kind of original stuff I could make besides "OC stuff" - which is great! but lol I wanna go deeper than that.

So! been thinking of writing instead some "technical articles" on how I approach the technical side of art! that should be helpful for myself in the long-term and it would also help for any time I wanna make smth new but need to reference something I made before. Would anyone be interested in something like that? I would put it up publicly somewhere on my more "public-facing" blogs or perhaps Ptreon. I just seem to bring out "more interesting" sides of my art when I get more technical with it so it would be smth really helpful for that first part I'm trying to achieve - doing more original work.

I give you…*drumroll* …Secret Magic Trio! Jake, June and Jim. The three J’s!

I thought about adding Jim, cuz he has lots of responsibility and summons cool armor, the blue glowy magic is like a cool overlap I realized while working on this. The show is cool, hits some interesting emotional points and, I love the monster and troll designs in Trollhunters and it’s produced by Guillermo del Toro, super cool to see the guy continuing work in/support of animation!

Just a tiny doodle I gave some color and FX at, I am still super busy but these tiny fanart sketches and tests give me sanity between work. This was really fun and simple effect to try out for the BG so I wanna use this method for the bg/FX in some other work eventually too!

Gran Juniper Lee, coaching a newer generation of cartoons into fully realized characters while wearing an enchanted biker outfit and…. a pair of totally normal glasses….. That’s right, Gran Juniper is here to look out for these kid toons so basically a grandma June design The description is 100% based on…. this REALLY weird dream i had… where me and my siblings discovered a 2008 Warner Bros animated Juniper Lee continuation…. but it was this really vague and self-aware cartoon where “younger” cartoons trained in a school to be better cartoons…. i don’t even know man, but i was so surprised by what the in-dream designers came up with for an old juniper design…. i was impressed by my own sub-consciousness. I mean seriously?? I would never have drawn those hairstreaks that way myself but all the rest of the design is just so dope…. wish this had been a real cartoon 

So I doodled this a bit after waking up from the dream about it and thought i’d wait a bit before posting but…. i just couldn’t help myself and had to share. Hope y’all like! There’s some BG versions which I like and the original sketch with different color for the glasses. I’m still kinda pin-pointing where the hair is so I added some of the first sketches too just to remind myself where else i might try to go with it… I made a bunch of colored BG versions which i kind of like, check em out.

Kevin 11, Gwen, Ben and Juniper in the Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure style!

After the American Dragon art I did, I tried drawing these characters in the RTA style too.

I thought for a few weeks that I’d forgotten to scan this and would now have to scan a version where I’d accidentally ruined the other side, but luckily I did scan it way way long ago and here’s that! These were really fun to try and figure out after the studies I’d done for Jake and Rose.

Day 5 for Orchid Bay October - Jupiter June!

I’ve always thought the ‘wanting to be an astronaut’ thing in the show was cool, cuz space and astronautics were a big thing kids obsessed over when I was a kid, so I’ve been trying to think of space thematics to draw her in for ages.

I think I was a bit too ambitious with the first few prompts, so I didn’t really get to finishing them but at least I gave an attempt at this one! Hope you like! It’s based on my old space June AU, you can find older doodles on this blog’s tag :)
