Just to give a little more perspective after reading the story:

The sequence of events is a little jumbled in the telling above. The actual chastising from the teacher came days before the woman’s thesis, during a practice run of her presentation. This was not a spur-of-the-moment thing where she just whipped off her clothes for the sake of being angry. Chai took the time to think things through before deciding this was the way she wanted to protest. She used critical thinking and level-headedness to decide instead of becoming volatile and aggressive, she would choose non-violent protest. 

I just don’t like the way the story’s being told by others because it makes her come across as “overly-emotional” and “erratic” (as women often do in the media, because it’s easier to attribute extreme action to “hysteria”), whereas in actual news reports, she had time to think about her decision and choose the best way to handle what happened to her.

There’s a difference between hyperbolic over analysis or fandom drama and just seeing what a group of writers / actors and directors (and set designers if you want to go there too) have consistently put into their own show for over 8 years in total, 5 years to a pretty high level and 2 years to the level that even random casual GA viewers noticed and joined tumblr to come tell me about it when they searched for Dean Cas blogs.

This isn’t an over the top screeching blog that ignores canon. I’m 1000% all about canon.

Canon where 8 years of romantic tropes and narrative and visual framing subtext has led us to a friggin mixtape, a tentative I love you, a literal I can’t live without you oh now you’re back I’m DANDY but no homo bro hiding his feelings which leads to important miscommunication relevant to the actual plot, in direct mirror conjunction to this an omniscient being telling Cas I know who you love and there’s nothing there for you there and he then goes the whole season acting exactly like this is true and he does feel rejected after admitting his love last season and getting constantly treated like a bro and told he was brought back cos everyone needed him not cos Dean SPECIFICALLY caused Jack to wake him due to his anguish - all this among many other CANON moments.

This is all canon. They chose to write this. I will not forget that this is all CHOSEN writing. This isn’t real life or accidental. This is repeated choosing to write them like this - romantically.

I was EXTREMELY excited when I first joined in the throes of the season 11-12 hiatus and then the glory of season 12 but as you know, you can see the way I’ve calmed since into just sitting back and literally pretty much pointing at the show just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There will be zero way if the show ends and it’s all just still Destiel subtext or it literally dies now that this won’t have been the most queerbaited and storybaited story of all time between these two characters. Even friggin Mulder and Scully finally got together after less than half as many tropes and shit and that was a “we’ll never go there wait the writers kept using subtext to the point we felt we kinda had to” thing.

So yeah, no, I’m not a child, I’m not a hyperbolic mess and yes Destiel is subtext but it’s also text. It’s part of the core, main narrative now. Jack woke up Cas BECAUSE OF DEANS ANGRY I CANT COPE YELLING. Dean was literallly suicidal til Cas came back then flipped to happy cowboys bla bla you all saw it. One or two of this kind of thing sure, fine, no biggie, but literally every opportunity they could in recent years they made this friggin romantic. Cas could have come back to the bunker in secret and stolen the colt from a safe or both the boys could have been angry or the colt could have been anywhere BUT UNDER DEANS PILLOW.

Look. I expect focus and closure on many topics in the show and we have already had SO MUCH on so many of the other topics like Sam - Jack - Lucifer dynamic and Sam getting his closure without actually killing Lucifer himself and Dean’s sublimated side coming out and friggin Mary as her own person, Cas x his heaven v earth narrative etc. I’m asking for NOTHING DIFFERENT in wanting the Destiel thread to be closed off in the same exact way! Why should it be any different exactly?!

I refuse to accept that because “that’s gay” different narrative rules apply. No. You can’t leave something as subtext after this much subtext and then actually use it in the core of the text repeatedly as a focal / jumping off point for a core part of the narrative and get away with it regardless of what kind of thread it is and for it to be all ok no problem no issues from fans that it isn’t resolved. If you write a thread to a story be fucking ready to close it off. End of. They have done or are doing so for literally every other thread.

Why should this be different? Cough. We know damn well why and that’s not an excuse anymore.

I mean There just is no excuse. It’s not us being outrageous in fandom. I wasn’t even in fandom 2 years ago - before all this new extra ridiculous shit - and I thought THEN it was what they were going for and stupid if it wasn’t. So like, now after s12-13 it’s only better / worse.

Better in the sense that it feels more like they might (til mid s13 hence holding my horses to see what s14 gives us) or worse if they don’t it’s even MORE queerbaiting and storybaiting cos like otherwise Dabb

I hope you don’t mind me tacking on to this with a slightly different perspective (that’s still totally in agreement).

My academic and professional background is in sociology + political science, and I work as a social research analyst to put it broadly. I didn’t interact with fandom at all until last year, but I’ve watched the show for a while and just assumed the romantic storyline between Dean and Cas was generally well-known, even if the more deeply subtextual aspects of Dean’s bisexual coding where not. I even wrote a short piece on queer subtext in Supernatural for a class dealing with coding in film, and hit on many of the same examples dealt with in fandom before I even knew the meta writing community existed.

I’m mentioning this to say that Supernatural’s structurally romantic narrative and subtextual story are not fan-generated or hyperbole. The show has basically gone through the checklist of tropes, codes, and ciphers that anyone with a basic understanding of writing, let alone folks with an academic background in film theory, lit, soc, or queer politics would learn very early on. Hyperbole does exist in fandoms, but I really want to stress that noticing these things is not an overanalysis or overreaction. There are entire fields of study devoted to understanding and interpreting the exact subtextual tools Supernatural has used consistently for 13 years, and the writers are not oblivious to fact that fans are picking up what they are putting down.

I joined the fandom with an interest in the sociological implications of coding a male lead as queer for thirteen years. My blog is mostly just me being emo about destiel gifsets, because that’s just who I am, but I came here and stayed here because my background in studying the intersections of social norms, politics, and film have led to a real fascination with how Destiel and bi!dean are understood both within fandom and academic spaces.

It’s so frustrating to see how fans are gaslighted into thinking that they are making up the romantic or queer narrative that has been laid out purposefully. I am still ambivalent about whether I think the writers plan to actually make Destiel or bi!dean explicitly canon, but that does not erase the subtextual ambiguity they have created around Dean’s sexuality, or the heavily romantic story structure and tropes they’ve taken advantage of to create tension in Dean and Castiel’s relationship. These things exist, and are based on well-known and established elements of literature and visual media.

And as you said, I will not be forgiving if they don’t follow through. In the year 2018, these creators are well aware of the narrative they’ve created and profited from, and are well aware of how a large portion of their fans interpret and internalize this story. On both a broader social level, and a more individually psychological level, it is wrong and harmful, plain and simple. It reinforces the social marginalization of queer communities, encourages the long and historied relegation of queer stories to subtext, and gaslights an entire group of people to boot. And, as you said, it’s just pretty bad storytelling.

Thank you for putting into words everything I couldn’t figure out how to say.

I have watched the Supernatural fandom grow and flail and collectively cry out in anguish since my livejournal days during the pre-angels seasons. I didn’t start paying relatively close attention until the angels fell (you could almost physically feel that shockwave on tumblr that night). I didn’t actively join the fandom until last year.

Long before SPN, I was a huge X-Files fan girl. I still am. It’s my comfort show and Dana Scully is my fictional wife. Thanks to Mulder and Scully, I’m very, very familiar with the long con, will they / won’t they kind of ship. They started setting that ship up in the fucking pilot (as seen below). 

And that ship is beautiful, it really is. Two broken people who are in love with their jobs and have their own flaws and obsessions finding love in each other? Of fucking course I ship it. And they ran with the will they / won’t they for… six seasons before the first kiss? Then they drew it out for another season or so before they had sex for the first time. And of course Scully’s kid ended up being Mulder’s and of course the regular run of the show ended with them in a weird spot romantically which they revisited in the revival seasons (then pissed on, but we’ll ignore my issue with Chris Carter).

When striking an opponent, imagine you are striking through them to add power to your kicks and punches. Keep your wrist straight and strike with your first two knuckles to avoid breaks. When making a fist keep your thumb outside of your fingers or you will break it. 

Practice these moves with a friend so you don’t need to think about doing them if you ever need them. 

Perhaps a trusted Man in your life would be willing to let you practice a few of these on him.

I should have included some other advice for this. 

If you aren’t used to punching solid objects (such as the ribcage as is shown in the first few images) don’t do it because you will injure yourself. A good alternative is jamming your fingers into the throat or eyes as hard as you can (maybe practice this one on an inanimate object instead of a volunteer as you can really injure someone, which is the goal in these situations). 

If you’re facing someone and they have their arms wrapped around you, kneeing them in the groin is probably easier than trying to use your hands as your arms are likely pinned against your sides. 

If you’re back is to the person grabbing you, drive the back of your head into their face, and, if you can, extend your arm in front of you as far as you can and drive your elbow into them. Again, you might not be able to use your arms to defend yourself. 

When head butting, aim the top of your forehead at a soft or sensitive area, such as the mouth, belly, or groin. You can do this slowly or gently on a volunteer or much harder on a dummy to get used to the movement. Remember, if you strike someone on the nose hard enough at a certain angle you can force it into the brain and kill them, which will cause trouble for you. 

Also, when doing the moves, yell as loudly as you can (things like “No” and “I don’t know you” and “I don’t want to go with you”) because it attracts attention from possible witnesses, which may or may not come in handy for you later. 

Also, when you see pictures like this online, don’t expect yourself to think back and remember them in a situation where you are going to need to headbutt or knee someone. You need to actually physically practice the moves you think you are going to use in a fight, or else you are going to spend too much time trying to think and remember what you saw online ONCE, but in the kinds of situations where you need these types of self defense moves you’re most likely not going to be thinking about the internet at all. I say “think you are going to use” because you don’t know what you are going to do in these kinds of situations until it’s happened.
