It's really depressing how reactionary and deeply conservative a lot of those stories are. "Here is a case of fantasy racism...but racists are actually right! Here is a fantasy version of colonization...but colonizers are actually good people and just want to teach those dirty barbarians their virtuous and progressive ways! These people were enslaved and kept in cages...so the solution is obviously to replace an old nasty slaver with a new, nicer one! And also give the slaves bigger cages!"

As to why the feelings of the leads are more important than anything - I suppose it has to do with the tendency to make the protagonist "relatable." A protagonist becomes a vessel for the readers to project their own feelings onto. The plot becomes a mechanism of wish fulfillment: an ordinary girl becomes a super special snowflake, reality obediently bends itself to her whims, everybody is infatuated with her, and those who are not are defeated, humbled, or turned into admirers. She gets power, authority, respect, love, and devotion from a hot and powerful guy with a huge...charisma. The wars, genocides, oppression, poverty, and other things are just set dressing to make the stakes high and the FMC's position important.

Grishaverse is a baffling case in this aspect, because Alina is initially designed as one of those protagonists—devoid of interests, hobbies, and purpose, with shallow insecurities the author thinks girls her age have to experience—she is not pretty enough, and her crush doesn't notice her. Except she ends up powerless, returns to the same shithole she spent her miserable childhood in, gets mocked by her own employees, and her grand "love" is a crusty, sexist alcoholic with small-dick energy. Doesn't even work like a power fantasy. I guess it's the famous "subversion" the fans praise Bardugo for: you keep waiting for this unsightly larva to finally turn into a beautiful butterfly only to find out she was a stinkbug all along.

I just remembered a story (by Vitaly Bianki, ig? I'm not sure) where the mother threw her cuckoo egg into someone else's nest, the birds were of course surprised by how strange it was, but not to abandon the one because of this.

And each time the cuckoo pushed one little one out of the nest to get more food for themselves… I'm not even sure who's more cuckoo here — Zoya, Alina or Genya? Probably Zoya after all, but.

Briliant. If only there were easier, more effective ways to keep Alina weak. Like not sending her to train with Baghra in the first place or not letting her learn anything at all. She arrived at the Little Palace unable to summon, completely ignorant about Grisha powers, and debilitated by her wasting sickness—already as weak as it gets. But the evil Darkling sent her to have lessons in magical and military skills to keep her weak! He also probably provided her with three meals a day to keep her hungry, that wicked rascal! The Darkling's manipulations are so devious and complicated that even the Darkling himself cannot explain the logic behind them!

Alina believing that Baghra's bullying and demeaning would somehow make her stronger could be an interesting aspect to explore: it's plausible that she was taught this toxic mindset in her orphanage, under the care of another miserable gargoyle, Ana Kuya. Instead, we got the asinine propaganda of Baghra and Ana Kuya as lovely mentors and mother figures who deserve to be mourned. What are you talking about? If I had to suffer "the mentorship" of either of them, I'd be popping champagne the day the old cunt finally kicked the bucket.

I rarely saw the Darkling, and when I did it was from a distance, coming or going, deep in conversation with Ivan or the King’s military advisers. I learned from the other Grisha that he wasn’t often at the Little Palace, but spent most of his time travelling between the Fold and the northern border, or south to where Shu Han raiding parties were attacking settlements before winter set in. Hundreds of Grisha were stationed throughout Ravka, and he was responsible for all of them.

He never said a word to me, rarely even glanced my way.
