okay. alright. so book howl. much more interesting and nuanced and worse and better than movie howl. howl who is “heartless” throughout the first book, yet still undercharges anyone who can sell him a convincing enough sob story. howl who endlessly pursues girls to make them love him, yet never realizes that without his heart, their love means nothing to him. howl, who shows the most concern of anyone when sophie has heart issues after seeing the scarecrow. howl, who does the wrong things so that he can do the right things in secret without people noticing. howl, who tries to use sophie’s jealousy to stop the prophecy from coming true, but fails to realize that her kindness would outweigh her jealousy. book howl.

There are only 2 rules when it comes to writing fanfics:

Write whatever you want.

Have fun doing it.

That’s literally it. There is no “show and don’t tell”. There is no “make it realistic”. There is no “fit in with the trends”. And of course, there is no “write as fast as possible to keep up engagement and please others”.

No.

Most fanfiction writers are not professional writers. This isn’t a job, we’re literally writing for shits and giggles. We don’t have a team of editors behind us to make our story perfect. Fanfiction isn’t about creating the most perfect plot with the most perfect prose and the most perfect pacing.

Fanfiction writing is for you first. To make your heart happy. Other people just get the benefit to also enjoy it if they wish.

That’s it.

Write whatever makes you happy, with whatever writing style you want, whenever you want.

I think one of the greatest parts of My Romance Scammer is that Tim surprises himself every time he lets a bit of himself show or feels his own real feelings for a second but also that Pai has no idea how much he's being manipulated but also that when he sees the side of Tim that he's trying to replace with the scammer persona he carefully created... he likes him. He likes who he sees in those little glimpses.

Tim is starting to care about Pai but Pai doesn't know Tim at all (none of us do) but the glimpses he gets, the accidental ones, the type that sneak up on Tim as well... he loves. Because the relationship they have now is a lie but there could be love, real love... but not yet.

That's why the whole thing has to burn.

That's why everything has to go wrong.

There must be nothing but ash for the new relationship to be built upon because nothing that they have built so far has any kind of foundation.

(North and Yu are built on so much more honesty and with the only lies because the ones Yu felt he had to tell and all mixed in with the truth because scamming has always been the life he knew. Yu's lies have all been minor enough that their explanation sounds more depressing than like a betrayal in a lot of ways.)
