Warren Hern has been performing late abortions for half a century. After Roe, he is as busy with patients as ever.
This was an interesting read. Surprisingly nonpreachy given the subject; and well worth the time.
This is oaywalled but it made me weep with relief to see an honest recounting for once, so I’ve saved some good bits:
bodily autonomy: a radical absolutist ideal
bell hooks mentioned going through a time in her life where she was severely depressed and suicidal and how the only way she got through it was through changing her environment: She surrounded her home with buddhas of all colors, Audre Lorde’s A Litany for Survival facing her as she wakes up, and filling the space she saw everyday with reinforcing objects and meaningful books. She asks herself each day, “What are you going to do today to resist domination?” I also really liked it when she said that in order to move from pain to power, it is crucial to engage in “an active rewriting of our lives.”
I have come to think of the suicidal impulse as the brain waving a flag to say three things:
something needs to change here
this is urgent
I don’t know how to do it
death is the ultimate metaphor for drastic change. it’s a general specific. whatever your problems are, it is very likely that dead people don’t have to deal with them. a real solution to your problems may demand a very narrow range of action that’s likely to be out of reach at this moment, but death is sold on every street corner, so it feels like a more realistic fantasy than happiness.
you don’t really want to die per se but it’s also not completely random chemicals swamping your brain for no reason. you want the pain to stop, you want to be somewhere else, you want to be someone else. it’s urgent. you don’t know how to do it. the end is not the end but a means that feels within your reach right now.
this is the wisdom of bell hooks: daily rituals of meaning and resistance and solidarity are part of slowly building a future where you can make the change you really need. and only alive people can do that. every step you take towards change and power is another step away from death.
I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me

I am sort of frustrated about that post I made about Google Gemini giving an AI summary of Tumblr users if you google a URL because it quickly turned into a long post where people started sharing all the things the AI got wrong about them, and I'm not saying it isn't good for a laugh when an AI is wrong, but I feel like people are missing the point. Who cares if the AI offers information about you that's wrong? What's worrying is all the information the AI got right.
That initial accidental google I did of a mutual returned an AI summary that was absolutely correct, and featured information about them that would not have been obvious from a quick perusal of their blog. The first few times I googled myself the AI overview was 100% correct. The version of that post that is circulating is not the one where I shared that the AI gave me someone's real name. I had hoped that it had screwed up and it wasn't their real name after all, but no, I checked with them, and just by googling someone's Tumblr URL, I got their honest to goodness legal name. Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? Like yeah I get that it's fun to go, "Haha, AI bad at collecting information," but that's not the problem. The problem is that sometimes AI good at collecting information, and it can collect a lot more a lot faster than a normal human can, by running multiple searches simultaneously and cross-referencing a lot of different documents all in a few seconds, for a level of snooping that would take a real person hours or even days, if they could do it at all.
That is so dangerous and I need people to be angrier about the fact that Google thinks it's okay to let their AI do this for online users. If you google your legal name and you're not already famous the AI won't say shit. Because that would be creepy and invasive! So why does Google think it's all hunky dory to do it for random internet users?
Also don't! correct it! when it gives you wrong information about yourself! If nothing else, training AI models is a job that you can get paid for! Do not do it for free!
Just so we dont go into panic overdrive: you can take steps to protect yourself! Part of it is reducing the information available (don't give details about yourself to Tumblr), but you can also limit the appearance of your blog on outside search engines! It means you won't get found by random googling, but it's also hiding you from ai scrapping!
You can set it up in blog / blog settings / scrolling all the way down
Excluding yourself from Tumblr search makes you only visible to your existing followers, even if strangers can still reblog you.
Several people have mentioned this and I regret to say I've experimented with it extensively and it doesn't do anything. As Tumblr themselves say, this simply puts up a flag that you don't want your blog to be indexed by search engines, but the search engine doesn't have to respect that, and the same applies for AI bots. I turned it on and off again and searched myself several times and it did not change the substance of what turned up in the AI overviews for my blog; searches performed with it on had the same level of detail about my blog as searches performed with it off.
You should still turn it on, because it's good to say no even if you know you aren't going to be listened to. But it won't protect you
ai shouldn’t information about you at all
wait i just found out you can be nice to people and be their friend i thought we had to kill them all cause i was raised in a lab to be a living weapon
Hashtag lab rats hashtag chase davenport
the most important virtues for the young woman are as follows: time theft, selfishness, orgasms, irreverence to authority, sacrilegious behavior, a questioning mind, and eating regular meals.
Hanging out with people will make you remember you're the crazy woke friend for like. not wanting to shop at shien
You will never make me hate somebody killing their abusers Like I'm not into the death penalty yadda yadda but that's self defense innit? And it's cunt. They hate to see a girlboss killing. Cause it's always women too everybody loses their minds when women fight back at all
I support personally killing your own abusers but not the death penalty in sort of a "free speech protects you from the government not the justin" situation, yknow? Like well that's your personal business. We're not doing mob rule either. The "Kill All Rapists" people are kinda batshit cause that's how you get lynching. But a little husband disappearing under mysterious circumstances never hurt anybody
Reblogging this manually. Op doesn't want credit for fear of being terminated.
