Well it appears that after some years of floating around various online hypno spaces I land back where I started...hope tumblr doesn't decide to play tug-of-war with the rug beneath me this time.

The Deepseek situation is funny not just because it's undercutting the American AI hyperscalers narrative that you need more compute to make ai better, due to needing to work around the Chinese chip ban, but it also puts OpenAI and it's clones in the unenviable position that any accusation they make against deepseek will also be a confession.

Deepseek stole it's training data? So did OpenAI.

Deepseek harvests user data? So does OpenAI.

Deepseek is government funded? So is OpenAI.

Deepseek is undercutting the US markets? So is OpenAI.

Deepseek is wasting compute resources and energy? So is OpenAI.

Continue for any argument you can think of.

The most embarrassing thing is, any American tech company could have made a cheaper model like Deepseek, but they didn't because it would undercut their narrative. If the tech hyperscalers know what's good for them, they will shut the hell up about this.
