there have been many times in my life when I’ve done something I regret that was motivated by a need for belonging, fear of rejection, desire for connection, the search for a place of esteem among peers, etc, including in fandom spaces. It’s painful to see other people getting quantifiable, concrete evidence that they’re wanted and appreciated and seen (notes, kudos, comments, bookmarks, subscriptions, replies, asks) while you get less. No matter how much we tell ourselves that engagement metrics don’t correlate to worth or belonging, they wouldn’t be part of the platforms we use if they didn’t have a psychological effect on us.
