I've had too few spoons for actual drawing but I just finished revisiting noragami and I had to do a little thing for it so I colored and edited this panel a little bit just for fun

picking up a 10 year old anime, reading its manga, and then making a fan art of it was not on my 2025 bingo list...

drawing this made me reminisce the 2014/2015 tumblr days so much, I didn't know anything about Noragami back then, but seeing posts of it on my dashboard made me remember it fondly!

I'm thinking a lot about Bishamon this reread, not that I don't normally but typically my thoughts are along the lines of her being hot, but she really is just such an interesting character.

She's kind of put in this maternal position where she's the caretaker of a bunch of shinki playing family, but she's objectively really bad at it. And with Kazuma as her guide, she's like "tell me how to care for you humans" and he's like "just do what I do and repress everything" and she's like "sounds good" and they go on like that for the next 100+ years.

But it fascinates me how her entire arc is her having a very kind nature in sharp contrast to her war god persona, and she hates the thought of losing anyone but herself in a fight. Unfortunately, she is again learning how to love from Kazuma (who is positioned as her equal rather than Yato, who is a parent to Yukine and needs less guiding on the ways of humans because he's spent a lot more time around them), and Kazuma's love is of the self-destructive kind, so you end up with these two people going to insane lengths to protect each other that it just makes everything worse.

And I don't think Bishamon's character arc would have worked for someone who is human, because her entire thing is being so unlike humans. She wants to be a family but doesn't know how they work. She wants to be a mom but constantly throws herself into danger for their sake. She causes problems for heaven and for trash dad repeatedly because she can't help but to love humans fiercely.

I love that her relevance in the story is about her hunting the crafter at all costs, because he's caused so much trouble, but she can't bear to lose any more of her beloved shinki, so she takes another, and again makes everything worse in the process.
