i get a lot of asks asking me how i choose colours / how i colour so i thought id make a post on the main ways i choose what colours to use - doesn’t really talk about how i physically colour though, sorry!!

Assignment #1: Final Work 

“Visuals for the Anxious” & “Static  Phrases”

Materials used: Photoshop CC - Wacom Cintiq - Nikon D7000 - 

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

For both of my final posters, "Static Phrases" and "Visuals for the Anxious" I wanted to examine the visual and creative possibilities of a glitch from the angle of "mental" or "human" glitches which are very much present within the majority of the human population today. Taking inspiration from graphic artists/designers, Dani Balenson, Patrick Smith and Nick Barclay, I attempted to experiment with my own poster representation of one of the most common 'mental' glitches, Anxiety. 

The definition of a glitch itself, comes out often as a 'sudden malfunction or irregularity', the word itself deriving from the German 'glitschen', meaning 'to slip'. It interferes, interrupts and can malfunction, something which when investigating into, many common mental illnesses can also be classified within. Taking that into mind, I experimented with a single pattern and gradually manipulated and played around with it, attempting to create a work that would possibly emulate the similar emotions of specifically, Anxiety. 

The final works consist of digitally hand-inked and drawn patterns, words and textures, claustrophobic and closely-knit visuals and concealed words which I experimented with throughout the process of creating the final posters. Aimed at focusing on elements of the mental glitch's impacts on emotion, thought process, I wanted to create two designs that could evoke or stirr similar emotions to that of an individual feeling anxiety. In some ways as well, I wanted to spark a glitch within the viewers' own mind, to see if by creating these posters I could trick their brain into feeling emotions or thoughts that the individual may not already feel.

I love the experimentation in these with the combination of just 3D and 2D elements. It could be interesting to attempt to make a non-traditional 3D poster? In the sense of making a projected-on sculptural glitch? To see, to see.

Assignment #1: “YOUR FINAL ANSWER PLEASE.” AKA. CHOOSE YOUR QUESTION.

Finally decided to go with (after slightly little deliberation) Question 3.  “The word glitch refers to an unpredictable irregularity in a system—digital and analogue alike. Explore the creative possibilities of glitch.” 

I ran a quick search on pinterest and tumblr for some random bits and pieces on ideas from other artists and practitioners as well as various works across the digital space as well as a few artists which could become key inspirations in my experimentation fr the coming assignments.

Simple graphics with bold colours but still visually striking and fun. Definitely love the idea of these Kinetic posters AAAAA. If I don’t get around doing this for this task I most definitely will attempt to work with this method for the second.

ASSESSMENT 4: [FINAL WORK]

"A DISTORTED OUTLOOK.” [2016]

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

The final work came out as an experimentation created through a little bit of stress and a little bit of curiosity and randomness. Taking the mapped-out painted work that I blocked out from the previous experimentation, I pixelized the structure and it's surroundings to create a distorted and semi-unrealistic, 8-bit style image. Taking an Instagram image from the collection of screenshots that I had taken for the previous experimentation, I then applied a similar effect, erasing some of the edges and areas from it and re-layering it to create an almost-tree like effect out of the screenshot.

My focus was on Perception, this idea of how we view and see ideas, objects and the world. Social Media are almost the eyes in which others who aren't able to travel or be present at various locations can see or experience a place without benig there. That being said, there is an ability to distort the truth and alter it, something which oddly enough I unintenionally might have focused on in the final work.

The pixelation and re-fabrication of creating the image, mapping out the building and painting over it and distorting the original image itself through Photoshop, is something which is reminiscent of what many do on social media in order to present one of many different appearances that the audience may percieve.

With that being said, my final experimentation and work of the semester, explores Perception through distorting the original, presenting a different visual to what we usually see through our own eyes in the present, and altering reality.

Final Experiment & Work [STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS]

1) Screenshot & Still from previous Assessment Work. Cropped out play-bar from Vimeo & side-share links.

2) Blocking out & Mapping from previous Experimentation using my Wacom Tablet & Photoshop CC, aimed to create base shapes to work off of.

3 - 5) Used Mosaic Pixel filter via Photoshop, pixelized the initial image and altered the Hue/Saturation sliders to convert to BW. Applied similar effect but kept the initial blocking slightly sharper for focus.

6-8) Experimented with using screenshot from Instagram of the surrounding area of the structure, cropped to focus on image then pixelized and edited in levels to darken the image. Layered in random fashion to re-create sense of ‘trees’ or foliage in a pixel fashion. Altered levels again to blend in slightly better.

9) Used captions, tags, descriptions and likes from the screenshotted images to create the buildings in the background of the initial image, layered once more and repeated to re-create building effect.

10) Additional effects eg. Gaussian blur with a centred mask around the memorial, keeping that ‘tilt-shift’ traditional effect. Altered levels again to try and create differentiation in tones, altered curves as well all done in Photoshop.

ASSESSMENT 4: Experimentations & Alternates

Fig 2 + 3. -Part of the original social media + instagram idea which I wanted to explore in previous post. Initially started by ‘blocking out simple/base shapes’ and then attempting to overlay 50+ instagram screenshots which I found through the location services on Instagram.
