is it actually possible to learn multiple languages myself WITHOUT being in classes for them or speaking one-on-one with native speakers?

i dont have the money or the ability really to do classes, and spanish and japanese are really the only languages i could justify learning right now because yhe rest of my family is interested in spanish so we're seeing bout a family tutor, and japanese because of my boyfriend

so itd be kinda useless for me to try 3 other languages on top of those, right?

hey! sorry if this is really random, i was blindly scrolling and saw your response and really wanted to yap as a fellow aspiring language learner! i'm not learning russian atm (french, mandarin, spanish) but firstly, i totally get when it came to the "fear" of the new script. part of why i originally decided to learn mandarin was actually due to similar reasons—characters can be really intimidating and scare many would-be learners towards more familiar target languages, and eventually i decided that that was a pretty stupid reason for me to not want to learn any language, let alone mandarin. and then i stuck with it for the challenge, to prove to myself that i could do it.

and i loved how you mentioned how russian is perceived sound-wise and wanting to break down that belief for yourself! another thing that turns many native english speakers away from mandarin is less what they hear and more what they can't hear lol: the tones. some have told me that even years into learning, they'll never master them. i too wanted to break that down for myself and learn to appreciate the sound even if i can never master it.

i'm curious if you don't mind me asking: what's it been like learning russian? what's the language and script like?

i just got interested in learning Mandarin so this is a lovely surprise to find in my inbox! i have been a bit concerned about the characters and tones but your message makes me feel encouraged to keep learning :)

hmmm its been interesting! i love the script, ive memorized it fairly well. its not very difficult in my eyes (in my limited understanding), i can transliterate pretty well!

the language has been a little more difficult to grasp, i dont really have a good ear to catch words, and russian has a bunch of big words lol. but hearing myself get things right, and be able to show off to my family and partner what ive learned, keeps me motivated!

i disappeared for a couple months (because hyperfixations suck and i can hardly ever stick with something TvT)

but im back and did a couple of lessons for Mandarin the other day while i was on the elliptical!

im supposed to looking at starting new job soon but im going to try to organize things better to spend some time on the target languages, maybe by splitting it up into a hour of one per day through the week (like Rus. on monday, Japanese on tuesday, etc)

my partner who is in his 3rd year of learning Japanese has also offered to start doing little classes with me as he has textbooks (and more knowledge) :D

so im very excited!!

Hey, was curious on how you decided what languages you wanted to learn and since you wanna be a polygot based off what your bio says what other languages you want to learn and why?

hello!! so currently, my main target language is Russian and

honestly. hearing Bucky speak it in The Winter Soldier when i was 8 probably unlocked some weird part of me lol (also Sebastian Stan himself knows Romanian! very cool!)

the more serious reasons:

* i used to be quite 'afraid' of the cyrillic script - i thought that id never be able to learn it, that itd never make sense without lots of help. so i guess im trying to take it on a challenge, to prove something to myself

* Russian is one of those languages that, i feel, a lot of non-Slavic Americans hear and characterize as 'harsh-sounding', like some people do with German. but i dont think they sound harsh - just different, obviously as my native tongue is English. i wanted to break down that belief for myself, because i find Russian to sound very beautiful and smooth

i want to learn Spanish because my mom's grandfather was from Mexico and came to America, and she grew up with only a couple things of her Mexican heritage intact, and me and my sister grew up with none. a way of reconnecting, to open doors we didnt get to have, and for my children in the future

learning Spanish is also a good idea for really any American, because of the large population of Latine people here. i wanna be able to make friends, help people, communicate with coworkers and strangers

those are my top two languages currently but id ultimately love to know French, Japanese (my partner's target language), German (also for heritage reasons), Hebrew/Yiddish, Na'vi and Klingon (im a geek ^w^) as well
