Harlow recognised his voice before he’d even managed to get his name out, and she let out a sigh of relief as she relaxed somewhat, but her posture stiffened again almost immediately as he started lecturing her. Her blue eyes widened almost in fear as she looked up at him completely speechless, her eyes also betrayed her and started watering completely against her will, but then again she had been on the verge of tears before even knowing anyone else was out there.
“I-” she stuttered, but the undeniable crack in his voice.. the break in the anger, it made her heart clench uncomfortably.
Then in an instant he was apologising, and Harlow shook her head, the action causing a few tears to fall. She didn’t think he was being rude at all, harsh sure, but it was expected and to be honest she knew she would be the same if the roles were reversed.. but in a way, they were. He was out here too. Which meant he was in danger just as much as she was.
She had opened her mouth to speak up, to tell him that she was sorry and that she was fine and she wasn’t going to get hurt, but before she could, and before he could even finish his sentence, a light caught both of their eyes. Completely caught off guard by everything that was going on, Harlow’s eyes stayed wide as Kace’s reflexes kicked in a lot faster than hers. Her body moved easily with his guidance, and she let out a small squeak as her back hit the tree.. but then she looked up at him and saw how close he was and she fell completely silent. Her heart had started beating rapidly in her chest, something she was sure he could feel with their close proximity, but still she kept her eyes on him, outlining every little feature from the way his jaw was set all the way up to the worried frown that creased his brows.
When he stepped back she finally started breathing properly again.
“You didn’t hurt me.. I’m okay.” she murmured. Her voice was unusually quiet for Harlow. She was known to be quite bubbly and loud, in fact the last time she was this quiet was right after she woke up from her accident.. when she had found out about Flynn’s fate.
“Kace..” she whispered tearfully in reply to his words, glad he had pulled her back in for the hug because if he hadn’t, she would have probably fallen to the ground with how shaky and weak her knees felt. She held onto him tightly, one hand forming a fist in the fabric of his shirt while she buried her face in the crook of his neck. Her tears flowed freely now, and she wondered how the two of them had come to be this broken, but even though she wasn’t okay herself she wanted him to know they could get through this together.. they could break together if they needed.
Pulling back only slightly, Harlow raised a hand to cup one of his cheeks gently, her eyes locking onto his as she sniffled a few times while she attempted to get her voice back.
“H-hey, listen to me.” she stuttered, her words getting a little bit stronger as she concentrated. “I’m here, I’m still here. You haven’t ever lost me… a-and you won’t ever lose me, you understand?”
Harlow was a strong girl, too strong for her own good. So when Kace saw the tears, heard her quiet broken tone, and felt her body lean on him, depend on him, he felt in his heart the same protectiveness he felt a long time ago. It was different now, because he was different and she was, yet they were both the same kids at the same time.
He was grateful he didn’t hurt her, but he knew she was hurt in a way that didn’t heal quickly, that didn’t heal in a night, to a day, or even a week. Harlow went through some trauma in life, and that had to be resurfacing because she was sweet, and happy and the girl in front of him, caressing his cheek was shattered. The difference between now and then? Kace was here this time. Really here. Not giving up on her, watching her from a distance, or 'giving her time’.
He nodded his head at her words, trying to compose himself, his mind, his body, everything. “I’m holding you to those words, Low.” He said, his voice strong, and sturdy, “Because I won’t let you go, not this time. Whatever is going on, with this blog, and this campus. You, and me are in this together. We’re going to protect each other and our sisters.” He said, his voice shaking, he paused for a second and composed himself again.
“We’re going to figure out a way,” He said, wiping her wet cheeks dry, and pushing the hair out of her eyes, “To make this end, to keep low and stop this from hurting us again.” He’d like to say everyone. But Kace knew how these things went down, and rarely did they end with rainbows, “We have each other to trust at least. We’ll keep an eye out for each other, be there. We have the opportunity to change things now.” He said firmly.
