OM Sinner's Choice - Purgatory
So far in the world of Obey Me we've seen hell, we've seen heaven, and now it's time to see purgatory. Or should I say, Purgatorio...
It's no secret that OM has taken liberally from Dante's Divine Comedy - most depictions of hell and heaven have! - going so far as to label the layers of the Underworld by the same names, right down to the four concentric circles of Cocytus, and the City of Dis above.
But while the Inferno isn't a one to one match for the Devildom, what with the seven deadly sins differing from those Dante deems hell-bound, and while Paradiso doesn't seem to hold much in common with the Celestial Realm, the middle volume, Purgatorio, has a great deal that is relevant to our fallen angels.
[Note: while the OG game was more in line with the Devildom and its layers being akin to the Inferno, but replacing the bottom frozen layer with the home of the sleeping Demon King, Nightbringer moved away from this, introducing the nine layers proper as a distinct realm from the eight-layer Devildom.]
The Underworld, as it is termed in NB, is set out in the exact same manner as the Inferno - nine layers, with Cocytus at the bottom.
The first, topmost, layer of Dante's Inferno is Limbo, a name often conflated with Purgatory, but the two have a distinct difference - Limbo is for those not condemned to hell, but neither afforded the ability to atone and work their way to heaven; while Purgatory is for those who are not condemned, but are given the ability to atone.
The bad but not bad enough and the good but not good enough yet, perhaps.
In the image released above, the title is Purgatory - so not Limbo of the Infernal realm, nor the gates of the Celestial. This is truly the inbetween.
~
Judgement - the Seven Sins
As I've written about before, the nine layers of the Inferno did not match up particularly well with the notion of seven deadly sins, and thus with our main OM cast.
But those very same sins form the structure of Purgatorio, where a soul must ascend up each layer, conquering each sin, in order to reach salvation.
And while the Inferno is structured to be travelled downwards, Purgatorio is structured to be travelled upwards. An inverse.
It is here, with some uh, educational methods that happen to look a lot like punishments, that relates directly to each sin, and the angel of the opposing virtue guards each gate.
The first of these seven layers... is Pride.
Guarded by the Angel of Humility, the proud walk with large rocks upon their backs, doubling them over, surrounded by sculptures depicting humility, and warning statues of Lucifer below.
The second layer is Envy, guarded by the Angel of Charity, where the envious have their eyes sewn shut with iron wire as they listen to examples of their sin.
The third is Wrath, guarded by the Angel of Peace, where the wrathful are swallowed by acrid smoke and visions of wrath.
The fourth is Acedia (Sloth), guarded by the Angel of Zeal, engaged in ceaseless activity.
The fifth is Avarice (Greed), guarded by the Angel of Moderation, where the greedy lay face down reciting psalms.
The sixth is Gluttony, guarded by the Angel of Temperance, where the hungry are starved of delicious fruits forever out of reach.
The seventh is Lust, guarded by the Angel of Chastity, where the damned run through terrible flames (direction dependent on sexuality which ew, but also surprisingly progressive of the time to not just send them to hell so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
<art by Seymour Chwast>
All seven sins are said to be a form of twisted love. The first three are described as perversions of love into the harm of others (pride, envy, wrath); the fourth as deficient of love (sloth); and the final three as excessive or disordered love (greed, gluttony, lust).
What does this mean for Sinner's Choice? Well, see my full theory below ¬ᴗ¬ But it's pretty neat that each of the sins is represented as being in this Purgatorial space, alongside the opposing virtues and the opportunity to atone.
In the case of the world of OM, we know that the brothers do not want to atone - at least, not in the future. But upon their time of actually falling and grappling with their new identities? It may be more nuanced than that, and separate from their anger.

💫 Full theory and plot speculation below the cut! ↓
why finish my woolooMC on the PC when i can just start all over and put them on the switch
picked a wooloo based mc as a mask to make at anime expo
idk if i'll go next year (i think it might heavily depend on obey me tbh) but if i do, i think, i'd like to do another obey me mask
if anything, this con made me want to show off my obey obsession even more, i think
so happy i pulled an asmo at AX's Sinner's choice stand
twitter stairs trend
they're crying bc they were left behind in the dark, quick, run before lucifer gets you!
no reposting!
I DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING AT ALL. WTF ARE U DOING LEVI
THEY'RE SIMPS.
How the Demon Brothers Laugh
The demons laugh a lot more with MC around, each with their own unique style.
This is also how the brothers' laugh in my fic, Wolf At Your Door 👀
~
Lucifer, the Trying-Not-To-Laugh
And bonus Diavolo on the left! Lucifer often finds it quite hard to hide his amusement at his brothers' antics, but he will fight to keep a stern face and they're all so scared of his wrath, they don't realise.
MC however does, and teases him when they're alone. He doesn't try to hide his amusement with MC, and laughs a lot more often than he used to...
~
Mammon & Levi, the Chuckle Brothers
These two have similar laughs, which isn't surprising given that when they're in truce-mode they are the two demons most likely to be found giggling over dick jokes. Levi appreciates that Mammon actually recognises most memes, and while much of Levi's fantalk is beyond Mammon, the otaku has excellent comic timing.
Both these demons laugh a lot and are prone to sudden explosive laughter and giggle fits, often over absolutely nothing.
The above gif is a legit incident from the dining room.
~
Satan, the Smirker
Like Lucifer, Satan will try and keep a straight face. Unlike Lucifer, he usually succeeds. In time, MC learns that his little smirk is the Satan equivalent of LMAOLOLROFLSKSKSK.
If it's just MC there, a quiet exhale of breath may be heard too. It's almost a chuckle, but his bright smile just for MC more than makes up for the silent laugh.
~
Asmo, the Howler
If Asmo is amused, everyone in the entire Devildom is gonna hear him. This is also how Diavolo laughs, though his is more of a bellow, while Asmo slides from hoot to shriek.
He is also VERY easily amused 😁
~
Beel, the Food Sprayer
It's never a good idea to tell someone a joke when they're eating, but with Beel it's kinda unavoidable. He's dreadfully embarrassed the first time MC does this, but given he aimed at someone else, MC finds it hilarious.
When he's not eating, Beel laughs with a full body shake, like a happy bear.
~
Belphegor, the Heh-zzzzzz
Belphie has three reactions. "Meh" means it wasn't funny. "Heh" means it was absolutely hilarious. "Zzz" means, ah, he fell asleep.

OM Ido: March 2026 Revenue
It's that time of month again, but there isn't much movement for any of the Obey Me games this time around.
Obey Me holds steady at $50k.
Nightbringer holds steady at $30k.
Ido climbs a little to $50k.
These are unfortunately all firmly in dead game territory, but the original game's performance is still notable considering how many years it has now been running with no new content.
Ido could definitely have done worse, I half expected it to miss the charts entirely this month, but it has rallied a little. The April revenue may be affected however by the game being unavailable at the beginning of the month, and by the announcement of another new game...
[Nb Creek & River is an outsourcing company, so it's curious that the changeover caused such a kerfuffle.]
March was not a big hitting month for the majority of the usual players, however Twisted Wonderland quintupled its revenue in Japan, meaning the game in total pulled in over $8 million.

Sinner's Choice
I don't have a huge amount to say about this one, so my apologies to my inbox asking me about it, I'm just kinda ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and don't wanna rain on anyone's parade!
I'll be very happy if it's good, but at this point I've long learned not to get my hopes up, and tbh I'm not terribly impressed that they ran a whole crowdfunder for a game with barely any content and have now announced yet another brand new game soooo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pretty art tho.
[Also I've been firmly in my Resident Evil brainworms mode since before Requiem came out, and my adhd brain can only do one hyperfixation at a time lmao]
Even if solmare was a small company, that doesn't excuse the poor product they've pushed out in the form of ido, as smaller companies/indie devs have put out much better games with a fraction of the budget.
They've also done better lmao
Yeah that is a really solid point honestly, when there are teams with way less funding and industry connections putting out some amazing games.
Sassy Chap Games came out swinging with Date Everything, Teary Hand Studio made waves with And Roger, Fields of Mistria is the debut of another indie dev, Touchstarved is still in development but has a ton of excitement in my discord server for it, and the list goes on.
Not to mention smaller hits from equally small teams...
Solmare meanwhile was in the same spheres as Mihoyo and Papergames but with more experience in gacha and romance game development.
~
I think unfortunately the truth of the matter is that Solmare decided to exit gaming as a field entirely. Hence the shutdown of their other titles, and the offloading of Ido to another company not well known in the industry.
The fact that Solmare is a rich company, and is owned by a billions-making company in turn, means that making a few million a month is arguably not worth it. Not that OM is making that, but I'd wager that's the potential if it was properly explored, to earn around 2 mill a month.
And while that's a lot in terms of otome games, it's not a lot in a portfolio dealing with hundreds of millions.
Again, I really kinda hope they sell the IP to a hungry dev team eager to make it work. I think that's the best chance OM has of surviving, because the current figures are deep in cancellation territory.
The man who slimed you vs. the man who held your dying body
In a way they both held MC’s dying body🙃
