Welcome to my new, yet to be named series all about gender (any ideas please leave in the comments or tweet me at @hannahbinns!) This installment is a something I wrote after interviewing Vine sta…
"I wish I could answer the question of what makes men in “women’s clothing” more noticeable than women in “men’s clothing.”
Masculine things are seen as neutral, as the default. Feminine things are seen as deviating from the norm. That's why everyone can wear "men's clothes" and look normal, but a guy wearing a dress is shocking (in some/many people's opinions, obviously).
Basically, women aren't wearing men's clothes, they're just wearing clothes. But anything that relates to femininity can never be just what it is. It is always considered shameful and weak because of its association with women, and it only stops being shameful when it is used for its "correct" purpose, which is to make women more attractive to men. Even then though, you can be slut shamed for it, so you're both expected to dress for the male gaze, while always running the risk of being criticized, shamed, and blamed for it.

“Molly's ascent to the mainstream lexicon has roughly coincided with the ascent of Skrillex and the clumsily named electronic dance music (EDM) to the top of the US dance music charts.”—Why US pop has gone mad for Molly, by @petermacia Thank you! (I’m unreasonably annoyed at the American rebranding of electronic music. Feels like the US finally realized how late to the party they were, so they had to pretend it was something new they had just created, hence the name change. Ugh.)

But really, what is a musician’s voice if not distinctive? Isn’t that… good? Entire pieces have been written about the voices of Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, so American and vital and wise in their manly scratchiness, like unshaved bristle and whiskey and dirt. Man voice make music good. Woman voice music bad: Too high. Too sharp. Too warbly. Sounds like birds, screams, mother. It speaks volumes that men always seem to love PJ Harvey, she of the deep timbre.

Remember The Weeknd? Of course you do. We talked about lots of things in our episode, but we didn’t cover everything. In this video from his Pop Music Masterclass series, Chilly Gonzales explains where “Can’t Feel My Face” gets that nervous energy from.
These videos are SO good. Also, the TFT podcast tumblr is back, bitches!
I have so much to say about this but I have too much to say about this.
(well, what the hell, for one (once? I don’t even fucking know) I can’t even say I’m smarter in Portuguese anymore because I speak it so rarely now that my English is probably better than my motherfuckingtongue that I got born into and spoke everyday for the first 17 years of my life. And German, which I started learning much earlier than English, is still so goddamned hard, yet feels like home, and it breaks my heart that I can never speak it for longer than 2 minutes without forgetting a thousand words, and yet it’s the language that feels like a hug to me. And I still don’t speak any one of my grandfather’s languages even though I try, but learning Catalan in Texas is, well, not ideal. And he hasn’t been back in so long that his Catalan is probably frozen in time, and he might feel like a foreigner if he went back now and everybody spoke differently. And my grandma is gone and I don’t know any Italian besides Mangia che ti fa bene, the spelling of which I just had to google by the way, and my husband keeps correcting my English even though I make conscious choices to just go with the Brazilian/Portuguese logic because English is missing words and concepts and i have no patience. And he doesn’t speak any of my languages anyway.)
