A FFXIV OC/general FFXIV blog, check out the pinned post for who Kagura is. Will also have a lot of general FFXIV reblogs and thoughts as well. Unlikely to be updated with any regularity but who knows.
So I finally decided to make a blog about my FFXIV OC, Kagura Jinba, in an effort to try and force myself to put everything I'm coming up with down and help me figure out how the character works within 14's world. She is based off a character who is mentioned in game but isn't likely to ever be in game, so this is really my first time interacting with the OC/RP stuff so sorry to anyone reading this, I'm going to be figuring out the character and getting better at getting my thoughts clear (assuming I manage to actually keep on this).
So who is Kagura, she's Mikoto's estranged sister that was mentioned in the Bozja story line and that just put something in my head I had to work through, wouldn't it be funny if Makoto's line from the Ivalice raid series 'I thought you'd be taller' was actually just her dragging her shorter older sister who just happens to be the WoL.
So how did Kagura end up being the WoL, well pre-ARR Kagura got her Archon mark left due to the Sharlayan non-intervention policy, my Kagura's mark was given to her for studies that brought her close to some of the peoples that Garleans had conquered.
She saw how bad it was and felt that Sharlayan could be doing better and helping people escape, but with Sharlayan refusing to help she left, and ended up joining one of the many Ivalician resistance groups, to try and help people. This went well for her she found her purpose in life, helping people and a good group of friends there working as a small stealthy strike team destroying infrastructure and helping people escape the oppression there.
Eventually the Garleans found the group's home base and then everyone there was killed, leaving Kagura alone and with her wanting to stay alone, she left for Eorzea selling off her main weapon and most of her gear for the ticket on the ship to Limsa to start afresh with only an old tome and her old mask with her.
Once she got to Eorzea the main game plot happens, with her being fairly distant to the Scions once they show up, both because they are Sharlean and because she doesn't want to join a group again, once the shift in the Scion's base happens from the waking sands to Rising Stones she realised she wasn't really alone and she needed to keep working with the Scions to keep them safe (or as much as she can post Waking Sands incident).
So that's the RP stuff out of the way, design wise she's Mikoto's sister so she's a Raen Au Ra, and she was built off Matsuno's character creation of Mikoto, she has a bit more of a tan than her bookish sister, she's like one tick shorter than Mikoto (0.1 cm IDK imperial units so no idea of inches), darker hair and darker eyes. The (head)canon outfit she has I haven't figured out what she'd wear other than it has some more armour to it, she will keep the Kokuto mask. She's a SMN (for now), I feel like she would suit a RDM because of how they were people helping the common folk, and she would have some oppotunity in her backstory to meet X'rhun, but I'm not sure about it.
Lord this was a wordy post, sorry all who made it here.
hey isn't it weird that several of the main character scions were held prisoner in castrum centri for weeks-to-months and then after they're rescued they never bring it up again? what happened in there that was so bad that they absolutely refuse to talk about it? like, we know minfilia was tortured, but that's only from seeing a cutscene, she doesn't really tell anyone about it afterwards. and that's not even getting into what might've happened to urianger, papalymo, and tataru completely offscreen.
and yeah i know the answer is that ARR isn't really a character-driven story to the same degree the later parts of the game are. but let's think watsonian rather than doylist for a moment.
How did they feel about moving to the Rising Stones, less than a malm from the castrum? Did Minfilia look out across the landscape of Mor Dhona and cringe when she saw the castrum's metal towers? Did Papalymo, seeing Baelsar's Wall looming over the forest, feel a twinge of anxiety? Did Urianger, upon arriving in Garlemald, keep his gaze to the snow and focus on his breathing? Does Tataru, keeping watch over the Rising Stones, step out into the cold mountain air and remember that day, whether she wants to or not? Do they confide in anyone about this, or do they keep it locked away and try to forget?
this has been an ass month already. somebody come tell me about their favorite minor NPC in XIV, who do you wanna grab and squeeze and let your WoL drag em around like a squeaky toy? define minor here however you wish, I mostly just mean non-reoccurring scion lol
Mine's Mikoto, she has such a academic point of view on everything and provides interesting perspective on the meta-physics of the universe that I feel we lack. Sure Y'Shtola and Uriangier has all the knowledge but they always seem to have it in 'plain english' (as much as possible) to help out the dumb as rocks canon WoL (players) understand but Mikoto will talk like you have a degree in theoretical aether mechanics. It'd make a good guide for writing academic OCs.
Her character is such a different take from everyone else we deal with, she's such a maladapted little thing, no socialisation for that poor lizzer. We're lacking the narrative archetype of 'verbose genius' that would be such a great foil to Estinien because she's such a dork who has never spoken with anyone other than professors in niche fields. It would be a good arc for her to learn how to talk to people and be more sociable, similar to Estinien, and would be a good setup for exploring both their characters in how much Estinien has changed since HW.
!Adult Alisaie and Alphinaud xD
I really had fun re-designing their clothes & hair
This is also available in my print shop! https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/shinjyu/ …
Natsuko Ishikawa went over her process for character writing, including the comprehensive background document she creates for each character. This information doesn’t necessarily make its way into the story, but it’s nevertheless helpful to determine people’s personalities.
She revealed information from some of the Doman characters as an example, confirming that Gosetsu did, in fact, have a wife and daughter before Garlemald.
I've done a couple of prog runs of Forked Tower and I feel like it's a great piece working towards improving the fight design.
Gives a lot of hope that whatever they iterate with in Evercold will be great and the midcore 8 person raids will be a good stepping point for people to start off raiding.
However, there is one major letdown in it, the limited revives. I think the limited revives are a great idea but how they implemented it is quite poor due to the amount of insta-wipe mechanics. For those who haven't run it, you get 3 revives total for the entire dungeon but here's the catch, you can't revive unless someone is alive.
So you're forced to have someone with has been rezed but not accepting the raise sitting in the map refreshing their revive so that if there's a wipe they can get back up out of combat to rez people so you can keep running the fight.
We had a wipe on the second fight where everyone died, most people had 2 lives left, but no one was alive so we couldn't keep going and had to spend the next half hour getting everyone back to lvl 20 and getting a fresh instance.
So unless you're forcing someone to not participate in the fight you're not actually going to be able to utilise the limited lives because there's very little point to reviving people unless you're nowhere near a mechanic that will just kill everyone.
Great fun but some not well thought out things in it.
Figured I should put some of my thoughts down for both 7.5 (so far) and the 8.0 reveal.
7.5 is good, 8.0 seems interesting.
Spoilers for both below
The setup for 8.0 seems so interesting, I was hoping Halmarut would be assisting us bringing the world's together in a non destructive way, having an ascian with a lot of knowledge was a good way of giving lore throughout shadowbringersBut hey, I'll take what we've got quite happily.
I do like that the Winterers aren't a monolith, having Calyx give us the info about the plan was a good way of not having everything so clear cut, though I feel they may try to use it to frame the 4th Winterer as 'worse' than Calyx.
Almost everything looks so interesting for 8.0 and I'm excited for it, I was kinda disinterested in dawntrail so it's nice to be excited for an expansion again.
When Halmarut brought out the scythe my heart dropped so hard, sorry Zenos lovers I'm so glad he's gone and I was genuinely worried he was coming back, both story wise it's such a dull twist bringing back a big bad from a few exapacs ago and also god I want someone who has more than a obsession as antagonist.
I am a bit annoyed that the garlean story with the twins is already scrapped, they spent no time there. they had a single patch at the end of endwalker helping then immediately left for Tural, and now come back for all of 5 minutes to tell a story then leave again. I don't see how they contributed at all, tuxedo mask did more.
I'm really excited to play through it with my partner for their first full expansion, they started playing when DT dropped.
From the infographics I have seen I am not excited that the 2 minute meta is dying if it's at the cost of raidwide buffs. I think the current state needs work, but when bard and astro are so tied in design wise to buffs I think jobs that work by buffing others will not be a fulfilling.
The change to seasons doesn't really matter, the odd patches were 'catch-up' patches for people who didn't savage raid so i think it'll be a good change to keep everyone happy throughout, but nothing is changing realistically if you played all patches.
I am less than excited for the Eva crossover, if we're going to another shard give us lore of that shard, like shadowbringers it was such a letdown to have another franchise take space that could be better served at expanding the world.
In the fan favorite expansion of critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, Shadowbringers, at one point you go to the DMV. Not a regular DMV either. It's a ghost DMV. It's the bittersweet memory of a long dead civilization's DMV crafted from the mind of the only surviving member of that civilization, who is apparently the kind of guy who takes great comfort in meticulously recreating the fucking DMV. And you have to wait in line, despite the fact that you and your companions are the only living beings there and everyone else is a ghost. At the ghost DMV. Because that's what you do at the DMV, obviously.
And the guy's dead wife is there. At the ghost DMV. The dead wife is a ghost and he's the ONLY ghost who knows he's a ghost. In the ghost DMV. You make friends with the guy's dead wife (while waiting in line) (at the ghost DMV) and he tells you that the lunatic immortal wizard who's making you defeat his seven evil bureaucratic processes while you die of magic cancer before you can even fight him directly is really just a silly sentimental fella.
Then in the next expansion you get to live through the dead wife flashbacks yourself. You get to meet the dead wife when he's alive in the past, outside of the DMV. And it turns out he works at the real DMV, in the past. And he has pink hair. And he and the past-self version of the insane immortal wizard (who sent you to the ghost DMV) pull off a sick prank to help you close the timeloop.
Later, you run into the dead wife's real ghost on the moon, which is actually a spaceship full of immortal bunnies.
#and one of the best moments is when the insane immortal wizard in the past#says 'pshaw i will for sure not become an insane immortal wizard. i would never do that'#and then due to Fuckery ends up forgetting all about that until he dies#and then presumably has a beautiful moment of 'oh fuck i DID become an insane immortal wizard'#ffxiv is truly the game that keeps on giving via @kratosaurioned
My favorite is when you later meet the past self of a -different- insane immortal wizard and tell him about his future and he's just like "Yeah, that sounds like sort of shit I'd do, actually,"
